15 months, 80k words, and entirely too much commitment to the bit later, have finally finished the absurd thought exercise that was: what if Bix and Melshi meet independently of Cassian and then Cassian comes rolling into the Dantooine door one day?

Wild ride, feat: two 6-week periods of writing ~40k words, with a ten month gap in the middle where I disappeared for the span of 29 fics into a different corner of Star Wars entirely, chuckles.

The first 15 chapters can be read as a fun (relatively "fun" anyway) slow-burn on both the Bix/Melshi of it and the Cassian/Keef reveal.

The full 31 chapters run just past Rogue One so. Fair warning.

I can’t believe Cassian’s mother is telling him “did you hear about the thing on Aldhani? I heard about that I put on my best coat and walked across the square with a smile on my face. It makes me think if there’s people courageous enough to do that then I can stay here.” And Cassian literally can’t even hide his smile because of the pride his mother doesn’t even know she has in him. He can’t even keep the son’s smile off his face in order to hide the fact he was on the mission.

I have half an hour left of work and can only think of andor s2, what if the building bix and cassian are blowing up is the one they just rescued melshi from, gorst is in there

Yesss Bix deserves to shoot Gorst a little bit (as a treat) while Cassian busts Melshi out of his cell, and then Melshi and Bix deserve to bond in recovery. They're going to trade notes on hearing aids and ear pieces and start a space pirate rebel radio station, and when Melshi takes up demolition and sabotage work, he and Cassian both think of Bix.

Maybe there's a moment just before Scarif when Cassian is scanning the faces of the newly named Rogue One crew, and he catches Melshi's eye, and they both know they're thinking about all the people who would have been in that hold with them if they'd made it that far (not just fallen Rebels, and Bix and Brasso and Wilmon who are FINE, but Xaul and Birnok and Nemik). And when Cassian says they'll make ten men feel like a hundred, it's because they are: the work of all those people got them free and got them there - put Melshi in position to push that little button, to light it up.
