Miles Davis - Paul’s Mall, Boston, Massachusetts, September 14, 1972
Head to Big O for a very nice slice of On The Corner-era Miles, capturing this killer nonet right before the recording of the In Concert album. Of that release, Christgau wrote:
“[N]ot as quick or tricky as James Brown, but more richly layered, riffs and drones and wah-wahs and tunelets and weird noises and shifting key centers snaking along on a sexually solicitous, subtly indomitable pulse.”
Right on/off.
Also worth checking out: this Mtume record, Rebirth Cycle, which features several of the same players (plus many more) from Miles’ electric era. Recorded in 1973, but not released til ‘77, it’s a spiritual jazz gem.

“Madrigals of the Rose Angel” - Harold Budd, Cal Arts, March 1983
Trying to keep things calm and relaxing and sublime this week, so I’ve got this calm/relaxing/sublime recording on repeat. Not sure if the singers here were actually topless.
Originally scored for harp, piano, celeste, percussion and topless female singers, this work proved to be a defining one for Budd’s career in at least two ways. First, initially unable to find someone to play the piano part for a scheduled concert, Budd taught himself to play the instrument with great success. Later, when music producer Brian Eno heard the piece he was very impressed and decided to record it for his new label, which subsequently led to a very fruitful collaboration with Budd and some of the best ambient music to be produced in the late 20th century.
