Known to cull inspiration from various subcultures and the spirit of youth skate culture in Russia, Gosha Rubchinsky has been putting his cultural past in conversation with the cultural present—and it’s commanded the attention of high-fashion inner circles and Hypebeast networks alike. Jokingly referred to as the “Gosha uniform,” his clothing is designed for his skating coterie and, more generally, cultural outsiders everywhere. A kind of tender gesture, his clothes have a warm, personalized touch—as if to close the distance between his own relationship with outsiders, time, and space. This is made even clearer as he continues to flirt with motifs of the Iron Curtain, Alexander Rodchenko, Saint Petersburg’s TaMtAm club, and more throughout his work. And though his collections are site-specific and clearly reminiscent of the past, they steadfastly refuse timeworn cliches about an Eastern European sensibility. His latest line directly reflects the cultural mix of skate and football culture. Here, Rubchinskiy mixes in sportswear knits and sweats—from his continued collaboration with Adidas—alongside tailored coats, jackets, and pants in brilliant hues. Altogether, the collection’s nonchalant layerings elicit a kind of boyish imaginativeness. Though technically considered a menswear label, the line’s undeniable pull resonates with anyone willing to tap into a subversive undercurrent.
