Hmmm but what if that scene of Steve stopping Thanos is right after he tells Steve that Tony is dead and he was the one to kill him so Steve is now just all anger and grief hmmm
“He’s dead, you know,”
Steve watched as the Titan approached, a brief flash of concern flitting over his bloodied face as he sucked in a breath and then stepped back. He didn’t understand- they’d been fighting for hours now, but they’d been holding back the onslaught surrounding Wakanda using the shielding protocols. No one had been hurt yet- although now Thanos had arrived himself, Steve figured that probably wouldn’t last very long.
So what did he mean?
Underfoot, something rumbled, and Steve bent his legs to find balance, watching as an ugly smile spread across Thanos’ face, taking his hands from behind his back. Steve spotted the gauntlet instantly- saw the purple and the blue that rested within. Thanos now had power and time as his allies.
“He fought hard, I’ll give him that,” the deep voice boomed across the battlefield as he took one step closer, and Steve did not back down, but with every word he felt something get a little more stuck in his chest, “until his last breath. Even managed to help the child run away back home before I killed him too. It was… almost impressive. If he hadn’t cried at the end, I may even have said he was brave.”
He pulled something else from behind his back, tossing it carelessly into the soil. Steve watched it with a blank emptiness, mind refusing to connect the image with the person who Steve had so often seen wear it- in battle and home, flying through the air and battling side by side with him on Earth..
“No.” Tony Stark’s arc reactor did not belong, mangled and dark with lifelessness, on the ground beneath Thanos’ feet. It made no sense.

“if, in a future marvel film, tony stark were to sacrifice his life and die in order to save steve rogers –– especially after the events of civil war because tony had forgiven him for his misdeeds –– that would be a monumentally powerful moment to end iron man’s character arc on.” (src)

on fanfic & emotional continuity
Writing and reading fanfic is a masterclass in characterisation.
Consider: in order to successfully write two different “versions” of the same character - let alone ten, or fifty, or a hundred - you have to make an informed judgement about their core personality traits, distinguishing between the results of nature and nurture, and decide how best to replicate those conditions in a new narrative context. The character you produce has to be recognisably congruent with the canonical version, yet distinct enough to fit within a different - perhaps wildly so - story. And you physically can’t accomplish this if the character in question is poorly understood, or viewed as a stereotype, or one-dimensional. Yes, you can still produce the fic, but chances are, if your interest in or knowledge of the character(s) is that shallow, you’re not going to bother in the first place.
Because ficwriters care about nuance, and they especially care about continuity - not just literal continuity, in the sense of corroborating established facts, but the far more important (and yet more frequently neglected) emotional continuity. Too often in film and TV canons in particular, emotional continuity is mistakenly viewed as a synonym for static characterisation, and therefore held anathema: if the character(s) don’t change, then where’s the story? But emotional continuity isn’t anti-change; it’s pro-context. It means showing how the character gets from Point A to Point B as an actual journey, not just dumping them in a new location and yelling Because Reasons! while moving on to the next development. Emotional continuity requires a close reading, not just of the letter of the canon, but its spirit - the beats between the dialogue; the implications never overtly stated, but which must logically occur off-screen. As such, emotional continuity is often the first casualty of canonical forward momentum: when each new TV season demands the creation of a new challenge for the protagonists, regardless of where and how we left them last, then dealing with the consequences of what’s already happened is automatically put on the backburner.
Fanfic does not do this.
Fanfic embraces the gaps in the narrative, the gracenotes in characterisation that the original story glosses, forgets or simply doesn’t find time for. That’s not all it does, of course, but in the context of learning how to write characters, it’s vital, because it teaches ficwriters - and fic readers - the difference between rich and cardboard characters. A rich character is one whose original incarnation is detailed enough that, in order to put them in fanfic, the writer has to consider which elements of their personality are integral to their existence, which clash irreparably with the new setting, and which can be modified to fit, to say nothing of how this adapted version works with other similarly adapted characters. A cardboard character, by contrast, boasts so few original or distinct attributes that the ficwriter has to invent them almost out of whole cloth. Note, please, that attributes are not necessarily synonymous with details in this context: we might know a character’s favourite song and their number of siblings, but if this information gives us no actual insight into them as a person, then it’s only window-dressing. By the same token, we might know very few concrete facts about a character, but still have an incredibly well-developed sense of their personhood on the basis of their actions.
The fact that ficwriters en masse - or even the same ficwriter in different AUs - can produce multiple contradictory yet still fundamentally believable incarnations of the same person is a testament to their understanding of characterisation, emotional continuity and narrative.

the thing that disappoints me about the infinity war speculation is the knowledge that this is going to be the mcu’s last big hurrah for their founding characters, and for tony and steve in particular. and this is… it?
we’re never going to get you gave me a home or it wasn’t worth it. none of the cute good morning, beloved or captain handsome or what was that about a safeword?
we’re never going to see tony’s cap tribute room or tony dressed as cap or fun identity confusion or steve going on national tv to proclaim what a good man tony is.
we’re not going to see them grow into each other and move past the betrayal and anger between them and into guess they’ll have to learn to love me. you did and he loved you and admired you, even when you fought and i’m not half as good as anything as i am when i’m doing it next to you.
we’ll never see those character moments with steve picking tony up when he’s at his alcoholic lowest or having them rebuild the team together or even just doing the hug n fly.
tony and steve are the single most iconic relationship in the 616, the foundation on which the avengers team is built and the most enduring friendship of 50 years of canon. and instead of any of that we got big man in a suit of armor and sometimes my teammates don’t tell me things and them punching each other in the face over a stupid plot contrivance and i am frankly Tired.

Where the fuck is the sequel?
“I think we should consider filing for divorce.”
“What did-” Steve steps away from the window, his arm dropping to his side as if the effort to keep it raised was suddenly too much for him. “What did you just say to me?”
“Divorce,” Tony grinds the word out between clenched teeth. “I think we should consider filing for divorce.”
Steve stares at him for a moment - gapes at him, really, his mouth half open and his eyes wide and shocked. For a moment Tony can almost believe Steve really hasn’t seen this coming. “What - no! No, Tony, why on God’s earth would you say that?”
“Well.” Tony sets his glass down very carefully on the table. Condensation has made his fingers slick and he rubs then against his palm so he can ignore the way his hands are shaking. “Since you asked. For the last month I thought you were having an affair.”
Steve makes a sound like Tony has punched him in the gut. “I’d never. Never. Not to you or anyone else. You have to know that.”
“I thought I did,” Tony says, and that’s actually the worst part. He’d really believed it. Until he hadn’t anymore. It had been like a soap bubble popping, but it had left a ringing in his ears that lasted for days. “But then there were the strange phone calls at all hours of the day and night. Always the same number, but you never programmed it into your phone. And you moved your phone if you saw me looking. And you left the room, sometimes the building, every time she called.”
“You could have asked me instead of jumping to-”
“And when I asked you who it was calling us at all hours of the day and night,” Tony barrels ahead as if Steve hasn’t spoken because he can’t risk getting distracted or sidetracked, can’t risk engaging Steve on this because he knows that if Steve wants to change his mind, Steve can. Tony would do so much worse than sacrifice his pride for Steve, but he’d hate himself for it. “When I asked, you told me it was no one, a wrong number, someone from SHIELD. The third time you lied to me, I stopped asking.” He looks up at Steve finally and offers him a tight smile. “I couldn’t stand hearing you lie to me.”
“Tony-”
“And then there was the way you kept disappearing on me. Missing meetings, cancelling dates. Sometimes you were gone when I woke up and didn’t come back all day. Sometimes you were gone all night. And when I asked you where you’d been you told me it was a SHIELD mission, or you were with Sam, or Clint, or Bucky.” Tony folds his hands together on his lap. “If you’re going to use your friends as alibis, you should make sure they know it. The day you were supposed to be volunteering downtown with Sam, he called me to see if I knew where you were because he wanted to go catch a game. And the time you were hitting the gym with Clint he was having a Mario Kart deathmatch with Logan and Luke in the upstairs media room. And the last two times you told me you were on SHIELD business, Maria had no idea what I was talking about.”
“You were checking up on me with Maria?”
“Don’t get high and mighty on me,” Tony says quietly. “I always call SHIELD when you’re on a mission. Maria keeps me as in the loop as she can, makes sure I know you’re safe. Imagine my surprise when she told me you’d asked to be taken off field duty for a few months. But hey, at least I didn’t have to worry about losing you to a mission.”
Steve takes a half-step toward him, his eyes tight and his hands clenching on thin air. “You don’t have to worry about losing me at all.”
“And then there was the money. My money is your money, after all. God knows I never cared about sharing it with you. But that doesn’t mean I don’t get the statements, Steve. I see the women’s clothes stores and the jewelry stores. And it doesn’t mean that when you use our joint account to buy a fucking townhouse and put it in a woman’s name, that my fucking accountant doesn't tell me.” His voice cracks on the last word and he clenches his hands together so tight that he can feel his nails gouging his own skin.
“Shit.” Steve runs a hand through his hair and it sticks up wildly. “Tony, let me-”
“So that’s bad enough, of course, that you’d be that fucking careless about it. Right?” Tony spreads his hands out in supplication. “Like, you could have at least cared enough about my feelings to hide it a little better. Maybe you didn’t care if I found out. Maybe you just didn’t give a shit that I had to sit there and listen to Riley Jennings in Accounting break my fucking heart-”
“Tony, please-”
“-but the worst part was realizing that I couldn’t do anything.” His throat burns but his eyes are dry. “The worst part was knowing that I’d have tossed anyone else out on the street for doing that to me, but from you I’d sit there and take it. The worst part, was knowing you cared so little, but I loved you so much I’d take that little bit I had left and hold onto it for as long as you’d give me.” He doesn’t smile, he doesn’t smirk. “I’ve hated myself for a lot of things, but no one’s ever made me loathe myself like I did when I realized I was going to sit back and let you use me.” He stands and Steve takes an instinctive step back. His husband is pale and his eyes are painfully bright. He looks like he doesn’t know whether to cry or not. “So yeah. I think we should consider a fucking divorce.”
