The "Natsume hatches an egg and raises a dragon" chapter spells out what was more subtextual in the anime, meaning there's heartbreaking lines like this. You ARE their real son!

But yeah. it must hurt to imagine what his life would have been like if he'd been with them from the beginning. All the suffering he could have escaped. The actual good childhood he could have had.

The chapter/episode is pretty clearly about Natsume learning that, yeah, you can love a child that's not blood related to you, what it feels like caring for a child you adopted. Through treasuring the little dragon, he comes to understand that no, the child you take in is not a stranger invading your family, the connection is real, and you treasure that child regardless of whether they're blood-related and want them to stay.

Even at the end Natsume can't quite let go of wishing he could have that, but he understands now that it's not as important as he thought. (and this line wasn't in the anime) Natsume's left with a literal "empty nest" but says it "left something precious", acknowledging that even if he leaves someday, he'll always be connected to the Fujiwaras.

It reminds me a bit of March Comes in Like a Lion where Rei thinks of himself as like a brood parasite who came into his foster family as a stranger who didn't belong and messed everything up. It feels like Natsume probably has similar thoughts about himself, but in this much more optimistic take, he's reassured about it. Rei and Natsume have a lot in common now that I think about it...

Sometimes I see some variety of North American Little Guy (opossum, raccoon, etc. ) and I’m like “okay”

BUT THEN I start thinking about how excited somebody from not-North-America would be to see this Guy. Like, would an Australian be excited to see the only marsupial not from their country? Are there raccoons in zoos on the other side of the world that are regarded as unique and exotic creatures? Idk but it’s made me more excited to see Guys in my area.

SO Ratchet comes over and has a look at the engine and is like yeah as I thought. its crotch rust. and you're like 'crotch rust??' and he's like yeah its crotch rust. its a. well I think humans call them STIs? its like that.

so you're like '..........are you telling me a Transformer fucked this car' and he's like yeah. looks that way. and you're like 'what in the world' and he's like I don't know. people are freaks. anyway we don't want this stuff spreading so I'll be back tomorrow with the right nanites. keep it away from the other cars.

he comes back the next day like okay so I have good news and I have bad news. you're like 'well what's the good news' and he's like WELL I spent last night testing all the autobots for crotch rust and they're all clean. so you're like 'does that mean the car wasn't fucked' and he's like oh no the car was definitely fucked there's no other way this could have happened.

so you're like 'wait. are you saying a Decepticon fucked this car?' and he's like yes. we have a Decepticon fucking cars. and they are giving the cars STIs. thank you for bringing this to our attention here are the nanites goodbye.

it’s not until Padme insisted they go to Tatooine that he does anything about them

(of course Padme takes the blame for going to Tatooine)

when he gets to Tatooine, he finds out that his twin brother had already saved their mother, but that his adoptive family had already been killed
