neopets has a neocash economy, right, with deluxe items you can’t trade for using in-game currency and MANY retired items that increase in value over time
this bad boy’s customization is worth around $100, for example
so on the neopets website you buy 500NC for $5 USD. neopets is rather infamous in that you can’t send a neocash item to another person for free - you need a gift box, which essentially costs 100NC (50NC on black friday)… or $1 USD.
however, it’s better to get physical neocash cards from a store, since that gets you free gift boxes (!). you can get, like, a 10% discount on scratchmonkeys or walmart
meanwhile, neopets is a global brand! which has to deal with exchange rates! so in brazilian stores, you could spend R$20 to buy 1,000NC, which would normally cost $9-10 in the usa. here’s where the issue comes in: R$20 is worth about four dollars.
meaning, if I wanted to trade for my fucking $100 custom up there, if I bought my neocash cards from brazilian resellers (who generally sell at $5 USD per 1,000NC) it would cost me half the price. this has been going on for years.
TODAY, december 3rd, neopets announced they’re retooling the value of neopets cards to match inflation rates, even for already-printed cards, starting on anything you redeem after december 8th. there are some pretty big consequences of this.
in brazil, the hourly minimum wage is R$4.54, or $0.88 an hour, which completely guts the ability of brazilian players to affordably buy neocash (and that applies to other countries like mexico, which ALSO had their cards revamped today)
thousands of neopets players had exclusively been buying neocash cards through brazilian resellers, and will now have to pay double the price for any future purchases. remember, neocash items are already considered very overpriced, when it costs literally an entire dollar just to send someone else a neocash item.
thousands of other neopets players had no idea you could buy neocash cards for half off, AND FOUND OUT TODAY IN THE NEOPETS NEWS that you totally fuckin can. this is important because, as neopets is ostensibly a children’s website, you’re not allowed to talk about outside websites on the neoboards… like the brazilian reselling sites.
neocash is the primary source of income for neopets.com.
seeing as this is neopets, and neocash is primarily spent on customization items, the primary form of protest against this change so far is just like… making all your neopets… naked
I’m not joking. we’re out here with naked neopets to protest capitalism rn
