Behind the scenes at Monterey Bay Aquarium, surrogacy is a crucial step in a rescued sea otter pup’s plan for release back to the wild.

We pair young orphaned otters with our resident sea otters, who act as moms and teach them all the important life skills for their return to the ocean. From grooming to diving to searching for and opening food, these sea otter pups are seriously set up for success!

We sat down again with Allie and Alex from our Sea Otter Program team and challenged them to describe this important work—with a twist! The result? An otterly pawesome explanation you won’t want to miss!
