what Is western is the idea that science and religion or spirituality cannot coexist and that religion inherently holds science back, which was not the view held outside of the "enlightenment" era of europe. in much of the world which achieved very complex and impressive scientific, weather that be medicinal, mathematical, astrological, etc understandings, these two things went together just fine in many cases. it was indeed the western euro period of "enlightenment" which divided these two things and pit them against each other. though, not always. as einstein said, science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind
