Shoto Todoroki x Reader
So uh, this is my first reader thing. Got the idea in my head and just wanted to roll with it and share it, see if anyone would like it and all. It’s about the Sports Festival. The reader is gender-less.
Word Count: 2,694
Genre: Feels, Funny & Fluff
Prompt: You face off against Shoto in the sports festival and then afterward stalk his conversation with Midoriya. You’re curious to find out why Shoto would want to talk to him privately in the first place.
The thought of losing hadn't even crossed your mind. All your efforts had earned confidence that no one had ever expected. Not even Midoriya had anticipated how hard you would struggle. In a head on head heated battle against Todoroki, whom you adored more than anything and had known since child hood, you could barely contain yourself. There were so many things you wanted to say to him and so many things you wished you could still do for him. You were one of the only people he had back then. When his world came crashing down, it was you he relied on. With his father pushing him, time and time again the two of you would sit outside and talk, but Endeavor hated your company. He hated your youthful spirit and how you kept distracting his son from his true goal. Todoroki was always forced to follow in that shadow, the one that you loathed so much. Endeavor wasn't even a father anymore to Todoroki, and you knew that more than anyone else. Which was why it was always hard to convince the boy otherwise. No matter what kind of pep talk you had with him, he continued to shut it down, but this time... maybe in this fight you could make him open his eyes.
His ice fought back with your own quirk, and for a moment you caught him with surprise. "Shoto! I know you can do better than this!" You'd call out, trying to tempt him to tap into his hidden potential. Knowing full well what you were attempting, Shoto's steady gaze seemed to harden a little. If anything, he knew he had already told you he'd swore to never use his left side, so your words were something that bothered him. So much so, that he wasn't willing to allow you to get under his skin any further. His attacks became more drastic, causing you to keep your distance. Dancing in this endless fight in the sports festival was tiring you out faster than him. Your own quirk took more energy to maintain, and with your training you weren't as skilled as Shoto. Yet, you wanted to prove something. If you used all of the power you held, maybe... "I told you this once, but I'm going to tell you again!" You'd yell across the field, waving your arm in front of yourself.
"If we were to ever meet in the sports festival in battle.. I'd show you what I'm really capable of!"
Declaring this, you took in a deep breath, and with every bit of strength you had left, you'd rush forward faster than what Shoto could predict. Parting his lips as he could hardly keep up with your movements, he was now worried and taken back by your sudden actions. As you came close to him, he'd try to pull up a wall of ice, but not without getting hit first. As the ice encased around you, and held you in place, he quickly spun around to keep himself from falling out of the ring. Breathing heavily, you'd lower your head to where your expression could not be seen. "I'm sorry... (Y/N)." Shoto would speak softly, in a calm tone as he turned to look at Midnight. "(Y/N) is immobilized! Todoroki Shoto is the winner!" The crowd roared wildly, and Shoto moved to thaw you from the ice. His expression seemed to be distant, and all you could do was shake uncomfortably. "Why..?" You'd mutter, but there was no response.
In those few moments he took to free you, he'd make sure you could stand, and placed one hand gently on your lower back. "Why?!" You asked again, this time looking at him with a torn expression. Confusion seemed to unveil in his gaze and before he could ask what you were talking about, you spoke again. "Why do you let him walk all over you?! Just because he's your father doesn't mean you have to do whatever he tells you to! You're better than that! You're..so much... better than that!" Yelling these words, and clearing the field, you'd leave Shoto behind whom bit his lower lip. He was to end up facing Midoriya, whom had watched the two of you battle in amazement. It had also caused something to stir in him, something that was making him unable to just sit back.
As a short time passed in preparation for the next upcoming battle, Shoto had asked for Midoriya to meet him. Of course you had just so happened to overhear, and in secret you hid yourself to listen to the conversation. Cuing in as Midoriya awkwardly spoke, you could hear them in the hall. "So..uhm.. what was it you wanted to talk about?" Though you could not see their faces, as you were trying to keep yourself out of view, you knew Midoriya had to have a look of confusion. You were just as confused, which was why you were leaning against one of of the walls in the adjacent hall. "If we don't hurry the cafeteria will probably be overcrowded and... we won't really get to eat anything." The longer it took for Shoto to speak, the more Midoriya was growing nervous. So much so, that you were also starting to shake a little. What was going on?!
"I was overpowered."
As Shoto paused, you wondered what he was speaking of. Was he referring to the fight he had with you or back in the cavalry battle? "So much so that I broke my pledge to myself. In the cavalry battle, within that last instant, I was the only one overpowered." Learning that it was lather instead of the former, you looked down at your feet. He wasn't the only one that was taken by surprise in that. Lots of them didn't make it. So what was he so focused on? Unless-- "Only me, whom had experienced All Might's power up close. It means I felt something similar from you. Midoriya, are you..." Listening intently, your eyes would begin to shake and you'd quietly hiss. That was right. Midoriya had been the one to cause Shoto to use his right side earlier. Was he beating himself up over that? Was he really going to keep letting his father hold him down? It was starting to tear at you more and more, so much so that all the emotion you tried to keep down was getting harder to keep in.
You'd done your best to just support Shoto in everything he wanted and was always so careful not to end up losing him in the end if you burst. Yet, this was too far. Just as you were thinking about turning the corner from the wall you were leaned against, you'd gasp at Shoto's next words. "All Might's secret love child?" Holding a hand over your mouth and ducking back against the door of one of the waiting rooms, you had to hold your breath. It wasn't like you knew what Izuku Midoriya really was either, but this idea made you want to laugh. You hadn't heard Shoto speak any of his silly ideas in years, and it made you feel a bit bubbly but it wasn't enough to sate the other emotions in you. As you did your best to remain quiet, you'd find yourself holding your free arm over your stomach as Midoriya spoke in response. "T-That's not it! Even if I was I wouldn't tell you that! I mean, it's not like I could tell you anything about it in the first place! I doubt you'd even believe me if I said anything though, but anyways that's. . ."
Squeezing your eyes shut, to where tears were nearly forming, you could just picture Midoriya frantically waving his arms around as he spoke. This was too much. You wanted to laugh, but that would give you away. In your moment of finding this funny, you hadn't seemed to notice that Bakugo was now listening in as well, standing across the other side of the hall, adjacent to you. "Since you said 'that's not it', it must mean that there is something going on between the two of you that you can't talk about, right? If you have something from the number one hero then I have even more of a reason to beat you." Lowering your hand from your mouth, you'd open your eyes and your gaze seemed to soften a little. That was, until you noticed Bakugo glaring at you. Opening your mouth and nearly losing your lid, Bakugo would cover your mouth with a low growl.
"Keep it down, you idiot! If I would of known you'd be here too I would've picked a different spot, tch." Bakugo glared and spoke quietly for only you to hear. Once he believed you understood what he demanded of you, he removed his hand and went back to leaning against the other wall. Feeling rather uncomfortable with him eavesdropping on Shoto, you'd breathe roughly. What was it that Bakugo wanted to know? You knew that he and Midoriya didn't get along that well. Yet, why the hell was he here? As you were frustrated and pondering this, you came to the conclusion that it wasn't worth discovering at the moment. No. You were here for Shoto. Whatever Bakugo was here for you could always pull him aside for later. You'd make sure of that. "My old man has a strong desire to rise to the top and defeat All Might. Though, since he failed he moved on to his next plan."
Biting your lower lip as you'd look up at the ceiling, you couldn't believe what you were hearing. Shoto was actually telling someone else about his past, and Bakugo was overhearing it. This was rare, as you were the only one who knew of it. Even though part of you was sad about not being able to know something about him that no one else knew, the other part of you was just pleased that he was opening up a little. He needed to let go and see the world through different eyes, and that's what you were working so hard for. It hadn't been to reach your own goal, at least not in this point of time. As much as you wanted to be a hero you believed that if you couldn't even save your friends from themselves then you didn't deserve that title. Noticing how Bakugo watched you and your changing expressions, you felt like hitting him, but made no move to do so. He was the last person you wanted to have heard about Shoto's past, but.. here he was.
"What are you saying, Todoroki?" Midoriya asked. "You've heard of quirk marriages, right? It's where you chose a spouse based on strengthening your own Quirks and passing it on to your children. In short, it forces another to marry. He is trying to fulfill that desire by raising me to be the one to surpass All Might. I won't become a tool of scum like that." Tightening your arm around your stomach as you heard the hatred in Shoto's voice, you realized he knew just how much he had let his father get away with. This brought hope to you, knowing that he was at least listening to your words, despite how quiet he reacted. Maybe this meant he was going to declare something new for himself? Even if he was going to declare it to someone else, at least then maybe he'd let go of the past that was clouding him. Not only that, but it wasn't like he knew there was a third or fourth party around him. "Bakugo, I swear to god if you tell anyone.."
You muttered quietly, catching a cold hard stare as he'd grit his teeth. "Shut up already! I won't tell a damned soul, you twerp!" He'd be as quiet as he could, despite his own frustration with you there as well. "In my memories my mother is always crying. 'Your left side is unsightly,' my mother said as she poured boiling hot water on me. I'll reject him completely by winning first place without it." Upon hearing these last words Shoto would say, and the building frustration because of Bakugo, you'd clench your fists at your sides. Bowing your head and gritting your teeth together, you finally couldn't take it. Dashing down the hall, Bakugo had gone to reach for you to pull you back, "Dammit! Tsk," He'd growl and move back into the shadows of the hallway, while you surprised Midoriya. "(Y/N)-chan..?!" Chasing after Shoto, he'd stop in his steps and turn around only for his eyes to widen as you'd grab both of his shoulders. Tears would slip from your eyes from anger, and so much hidden feelings working through you.
"Shoto Todoroki!" You'd yell, unable to look him in the eye at the moment. "It doesn't matter what your father thinks! This is your own power! You can use it however you want! You want to be a hero?! Then be the best damn hero you can be by showing him you can do it all without him using you as a tool! Use your flames for good! Use them to protect people! It's all in your hands!" You'd breathe, and look up with an angered expression to see Shoto's eyes shaking. "For the record, I never once saw your left side as bad! So stop thinking that it is! You're fine the way you are! I accept you! Shoto! Why can't you just open your eyes already?!" Crying a bit more, you'd shake him, and he'd tense up slightly. After a few moments of holding him there, you'd hiccup. Midoriya had grown quiet, and so had Shoto. The only thing that would be heard was your sobbing. Even as Shoto would move an arm to rub at your back, there were no words.
Beating on his chest as you moved your hands from his shoulders, your words were quieter than before. "I've been trying so hard to let you know it's okay! You don't have to hide all of your pain from everyone! Not everyone is going to treat you like him! Shoto..." You'd suck in a breath and lift your head, gazing into his now painful looking gaze. "I'm sorry for listening in.. for always getting in your way and frustrating you. I know I'm not the greatest friend or even person..but.. I've always admired you! I've always been by your side! And I always will!" With your declaration, you'd gain a sense of boldness by leaning up and kissing him. Surprise and warmth filled Shoto as his eyes grew wide again. His face heated, and soon he found himself blushing. Taken back by your display of affection, when you'd move from him he had a hand covering his flustered face. "So.. do your best okay?" You'd weakly smile as you moved from him.
While it took Shoto a moment to gather his bearings, Midoriya was waving his arms in the background, all flustered too for having witnessed a display of affection. It was then Shoto caught the sight of Bakugo grabbing Midoriya by the back of his shirt and dragging him away. Lowering his hand from his face, Shoto returned his attention to you, a small, but visible smile crossing his face. "I'm sorry (Y/N) for not realizing sooner... I'm new to this. I'm also...still trying to figure out everything with my father. My hatred is so strong that even I am unsure if I can contain it from bursting on you, or the others. It's why I try to keep everything inside. Though, just now, when I told Midoriya, I did feel a little better.." Stepping towards you, Shoto would place a single hand atop of your head. "If I wasn't so fixed with rejecting him maybe I could of been better for you.. Knowing that you've carried these feelings for me for so long... Thank you... (Y/N)-chan..." He'd whisper before giving a true smile, one that made you embrace him tightly.
