EMT Training In New York For Competencies In Emergency Medical Services
EMTs are entry-level emergency medical care providers. They immediately respond to medical emergencies and quickly provide necessary medical care to critically ill or injured, and transport patients to the nearest emergency facilities. Individuals wishing to build their career in New York emergency medical services must complete EMT Training in New York and earn certification. The training program prepares EMTs for emergency medical care services, whereas EMT examination evaluates their entry-level competencies for safe and quality emergency care. The New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services is the regulatory authority for the New York EMT Training Program and Certification. The New York State Bureau of EMS is also responsible for the maintenance of EMS system in the state, coordination, development, and approval of the EMT certification courses, development of EMS curriculum, free certification trainings, and others.
In the state of New York, the students and volunteers can enroll for different level emergency medical level training programs including CFR, EMT-B, AEMT-I, AEMT-CC, AEMT-P, and Paramedic Refresher. The successful completion of the training program allows them to challenge the Department approved Certification test for their level of training.
In New York, only Bureau of EMS approved schools and community colleges and private and public agencies are authorized to teach approved EMS certification courses. There are 122 EMS training providers for different level training programs statewide. The Bureau sponsored training providers are also eligible for EMS training Reimbursement funds from the state.
It is also to be noted that the State Emergency Medical Services Council has decided to implement the National Educational Standards for the New York State Bureau of EMS curricula, and adopt the National Scope of Practice. The adoption has resulted in the higher training hours for the state CFR and EMT, replacement of new Intermediate level or EMT by the national EMT, and change of Paramedic to national Paramedic. However, state Critical Care will have minor changes in the EMT portion. The new estimated course hours for EMS courses include a) CFR: 48-60 hours, b) EMT: 150-190 hours, c) AEMT: 150-250 hours and d) Paramedics 1000-1300 hours.
New York EMT Training Features
The features of EMT Training New York consist of didactic instructions, skill lab training, hospital/clinical experience, and field experience. The hospital and clinical hands-on experience require students to observe emergency departments for a certain period of time, and perform an assessment on minimum 10 patients in a clinical or standardize setting. In the same way, students are also required to contact patients and document their field experience.
EMT Course Length
EMT course length does not depend upon the fixed hours, but based on competences. The course materials also come in different formats. The length of the entire course is around 150-190 hours, as per the National Educational Standards. The training sponsors can also develop their own courses based on the National Educational Standards.
EMT Course curriculum
New York state EMT curriculum is based on National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards and includes EMS System, EMS System Communication, Public Health, Principles of Pharmacology and Emergency Medications, Medical/Legal and Ethics, Airway Management, Respiration, Artificial Ventilation, Monitoring Devices, Patient Assessment, Anatomy, Physiology and other emergency medical related subjects.
According to the New York Emergency Medical Services Code, an applicant, who has successfully completed a state approved EMT Training in New York is eligible for initial EMT certification. However, to qualify, the applicant will also have to complete certain additional requirements including free from any crime records, minimum 18 years of age, minimum 16 years of age for certified first responder, submitting of a completed application, and passing the skill and written examination.
