Su-Hyeok groaned lowly as he fought off the voice screaming in his head, glaring at his hands as if they were the ones responsible for his turmoil. Cheong-San was off with the rest of their friends, doing a quick check in – like he always did now – before returning to his side once more, calming the voice raging inside him and setting his emotions at ease.
He had not noticed it at first – too busy trying to survive and fighting off the instincts that told him to rip into the warm flesh of those around him – but the voice only ever flared up when Cheong-San was away from him. It did not matter if he was still within his sight and perfectly safe, if the teen was more than an arm’s length away the voice would screech and rage until he was by his side once more.
Su-Hyeok found it mildly disconcerting at first, scared that the instincts were planning something for Cheong-San – he had no idea what that meant, he was scared and producing any plausible explanation he could – but when they proved relatively harmless he trusted them a little more. Just a little though. They still told him to bite the heads off of friends, people he had trusted since the tenth grade, so he was mindful of them still.
Cheong-San settled next to him with a sigh, stretching briefly before turning toward him with a soft smile, β€œYou ok? You look tired.”
The taller teen hummed vaguely, leaning into the hand that cupped his cheek and relishing in the warmth and softness of it. It was sort of embarrassing how easily Cheong-San’s touch affected him but at the same time it was not a complete surprise. The two were dating after all, it was kind of a given for the shorter teen to have such an affect on him.
Su-Hyeok pulled the other teen closer, nuzzling into the side of his neck and just breathing him in with the enhanced senses being a hambie offered. Their efforts of hiding their relationship ended up being entirely for nothing once Su-Hyeok got bit. He bit and growled at anyone and everyone that came near him except for Cheong-San for those first few moments of transformation. Their relationship came to light when those growls extended to β€œYou smell like them…” Cheong-San rolled his eyes with the words, huffing a laugh when that only made Su-Hyeok nuzzle deeper into his neck in what he deemed as β€˜covering the scent up’.
β€œSu-Hyeok… we’re surrounded by our friends, and I come into contact with all of them. Of course, I’m going to smell like them.” Despite the logic it did not stop the athlete from grumbling, discontent curdling low in his stomach until he managed to completely cover the scent with his own. He had no idea why it had such an affect on him and why his instincts made him like this, he just knew that until he made Cheong-San smell like him the voice would not shut up.
The athlete glanced up for a moment when familiar steps shuffled closer toward them, managing to catch the eye of Nam-Ra before burying his face once more. As long as he kept Cheong-San close he wouldn’t lash out and the voice would stay quiet enough, allowing them one less thing to worry about as a whole.
β€œWe need food. It’s been too long since all of us have last eaten and it’s starting to show in some of us.” Su-Hyeok knew exactly what the class president was implying, considering she came to them – the two who kept going out and sacrificing themselves for the group – and was staring specifically at him it was hard not to realise what she was saying.
Cheong-San actually seemed to hesitate for once, glancing between him and the rest of their friends. Su-Hyeok felt his heart skip beats at the consideration of his boyfriend, resisting the urge to visibly swoon as he merely smiled back and shrugged vaguely.
β€œI don’t mind going to get you guys food, it’ll be safer if I go since the zombies don’t react to me.” The words immediately make the shorter teen frown, an obvious protest on his lips before Su-Hyeok is covering his mouth with his hand, shooting him an amused smile.
β€œNo, you can’t come. It’s too dangerous for you to be out there.” Cheong-San glared from behind his hand, biting at it softly before pulling it away – Su-Hyeok viciously squashed the urges that came raging up with that action – and letting him know exactly what he thought of that suggestion.
β€œAnd? I’m not a helpless child Bare-Su. I can look after myself just fine… plus you’ll have my back out there.” The athlete glared at his boyfriend, the teen simply shooting him a smug smile since he knew exactly what those words would do to Su-Hyeok, and he knew exactly how much the voice in his head loved being told that he was protecting what was theirs.
Cheong-San stood – ignoring the way Su-Hyeok continued to glare at him – before sending Nam-Ra a small smile and nod, β€œWe’ll see if we can find anything in the snack bar. Most of the zombies are still on the left side of the school so we should be able to go down on the right side if we stay quiet.”
The class president hummed absently, shooting them a grateful smile before walking back to join the rest of their friends. Su-Hyeok’s glare turned to their group of friends, some of them wisely averting their gazes while others gave him either a sheepish smile or a look of regret. They may be their friends but that did not mean he wasn’t angry with them for asking them – technically asking Nam-Ra to ask them but still – to risk their lives for food. Because it was one thing to risk your life of your own volition and another thing entirely to be asked to do it.
Cheong-San – adorable, naΓ―ve, self-sacrificing idiot Cheong-San – didn’t bat an eye at the request, more concerned for Su-Hyeok than he was of himself, even though the athlete was the one with enhanced senses and was practically invisible to zombies. The reaction made him want to both slap his boyfriend and absolutely drown in him in affection for being like that.
Su-Hyeok stood from his seat, stretching out his arms and legs for a brief moment before making his way to the door of the classroom they had holed up in. Cheong-San was hot on his heels and waving goodbye to their friends with a bright smile, as if they weren’t about to face near death at every corner and be running for their lives all the while. Su-Hyeok really had to teach him some self-preservation or something.
The second they stepped outside the smiles and care-free nature disappeared, Cheong-San dropping low by his side in an effort to somewhat hide himself. It probably wouldn’t do a damn thing, but it was reassuring to see some sense of caution in his boyfriend for once. Su-Hyeok lead the way down the hall, constantly glancing behind him and into classrooms they passed by to make sure nothing would suddenly get the drop on them.
Luck seemed to be on their side since they managed to get outside and halfway to the snack bar before finally being spotted, the zombie having stumbled out of a shed just as they passed by and immediately tackling Cheong-San to the ground. The teen let out a barely muffled shout, immediately turning and trying to keep the zombie’s mouth away from him as much as he can as they fall to the ground in a tangle.
Su-Hyeok spun on his heel, eyes latching onto the sight and snarling like an animal at the other zombie. The voice in his head was raging, telling him to rip and tear and shred the zombie for even daring to go near what was theirs. Before he can fully register what his body is doing he’s beside the two, ripping the zombie away and throwing him back into the shed he came from before pulling Cheong-San into his chest.
The zombie managed to get caught on something in the shed – reaching toward the two of them and biting uselessly at the air as they watched – Su-Hyeok watching on with a mix of smug satisfaction and angry disgust while Cheong-San watches with barely contained terror and relief. They only allow themselves another moment to watch before the taller teen is hauling them up, keeping Cheong-San right by his side before jogging them the last few meters to the snack bar.
Once inside the athlete quickly checks the space to make sure nobody else is in there before barring the door, pulling Cheong-San further inside once he’s finished. He settles the shorter teen on a nearby bench, running his hands over his body in search of any possible injury that he cannot see with his own eyes.
His boyfriend huffs out an amused laugh at his concern, shooting him a small smile before taking his hands in his own, β€œI’m fine Su-Hyeok. We barely touched the ground before you got it off me.”
Despite his reassurances Su-Hyeok still continued his inspection, only settling down when his brain finally registered the fact that he could not smell any blood coming from the shorter teen. The athlete slumped forward, burying his face in Cheong-San’s neck, and relishing in the smell of Cheong-San. Warm. Alive and safe.
β€œI told you it would’ve been safer if I came alone.” The shorter teen hummed absently, bringing his hands up to run through Su-Hyeok’s hair, biting off the laugh that wanted to escape him when his boyfriend practically melted into his hold. The knowledge that he could make big, scary, hambie Su-Hyeok melt like this always made him giddy, something that was probably concerning if he put any more thought into it.
β€œWell, I told you that I knew you’d have my back. So, I guess we were both right in the end.” Su-Hyeok grumbled lowly to himself, adamantly ignoring the way the voice in his head preened with the words, before jabbing Cheong-San in the side just to make him squirm.
β€œYou’re a horrible influence on my infected brain.” The shorter teen snorted softly, kissing the side of Su-Hyeok’s head just to appease him somewhat.
β€œYou love me anyway.” The athlete did not answer him verbally, though the way he snuggled in further – as if trying to physically bury himself in Cheong-San’s neck – and pulled him in closer was answer enough for the shorter teen. Cheong-San settled himself, trying to get as comfortable as possible since they probably weren’t going anywhere for a while.

AO3 AUTHOR'S NOTE:Literally just an excuse for me to write possessive Su-Hyeok and thinking him being a hambie would suit it well.
Hope you guys liked it. I was going through drafts and found my un-written prompts for this fandom again so I might take the time to write through them.
