2023-24 sugar season: ISMA鈥檚 second advance estimates of sugar production
The Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) has released its second advance estimates of sugar production for the 2023-24 season. Based on satellite images, field visits, current trends in yields and sugar recoveries, and expected performance in the remaining period of the sugar season, ISMA estimates a gross sugar production of around 330.5 lac tons, compared to 366 lac tons produced in the last season. After considering government-approved sugar diversion for ethanol production, the net sugar production is estimated to be around 313.5 lac tons. With an opening stock of about 56 lac tons, domestic consumption of 285 lac tons, and the estimated production, a comfortable closing stock of around 84.5 lac tons is expected by September 30, 2024. ISMA suggests that the government may allow around 18 lac tons of additional sugar diversion for ethanol production, ensuring sufficient closing stocks for the next season. As of January 31, 2024, 187.2 lac tons of sugar have been produced, with 520 factories operating compared to 517 last year.
