"how can you be blogging about fun stuff while this horrible thing is going on?"
there's always horrible things going on somewhere. if you refuse to calm down until it all stops, all you'll do is give yourself a stroke

when I see something dated 2019 I think “oh that’s not too long ago” and then I remember that 2019 was not only five years ago but those five years have somehow contained several lifetimes

There's been a lot of talk about how your vote is private, especially aimed at people who might want to vote for Harris but feel pressure from Trump-supporting partners, friends, family, etc. So there's probably going to be more of those people trying to pressure you if they can to send them a ballot selfie, "proving" that you voted a particular kind of way.
So here's a reminder that if someone in your life "requires" a ballot selfie, you can still vote how you want. It's possible to "waste" a ballot and request another one to fill out, so long as you do not submit it. It's possible to correct your selections on a voting machine, so long as you do not hit the "submit" or "vote" button.
So here's how to do this:
First, make sure photographing a ballot is even legal in your state. They are not in a lot of them! Look it up. No better defense against not taking one than "well I looked it up and it's illegal here." Save the link about the election laws in your state to show them if they don't believe you.
Fill out your ballot the way that other person wants, but do not submit it. Take the selfie.
If you're voting by paper, draw a line across it, tell the poll worker you wasted your ballot and want a new one. They are required to give it to you and toss the old ballot.
If you're voting on a machine, hit any necessary back buttons to go back to the beginning of your ballot.
Fill it out the way you want.
THEN hit submit on the voting machine / put your paper ballot in the counting machine / etc.
Other stuff to try to influence your vote - like someone peeking into your ballot box or at your machine - tell a poll worker. Trying to influence another person's vote is illegal voter intimidation, and poll workers are designed to protect you against that. It doesn't matter who is trying to do that.
There was a good post about this going around a few elections ago, but I thought it was a good time for a new one. Since the Harris campaign has rightly been reminding people that their vote is private, some people might be looking for ways to make it not private. We already see far-right jerks like Charlie Kirk melting down at the idea that women might vote differently from their husbands.
But your vote is always private. And there are ways you can ensure that, no matter what.
Remember that democracy is on the line. If Trump wins, this could be our last chance to vote at all. Don't waste it.

casual reminder before tomorrow arrives that abstaining or voting 3rd party instead of voting for harris is THE most selfish thing you can do. i know you think you are doing the right thing, but i cannot emphasize enough that these two candidates are NOT "equally bad." palestinians will be in significantly more danger if that criminal shitstain wins, IN ADDITION TO every other minority and less privileged person. if you really and truly want to prove your motivation is to stop the harm of others, then you MUST put your ego aside and do the uncomfortable thing. this is not the time for a boycott. this is not the time to dig your heels in the sand and claim you can't possibly go against your morals. the truth of the matter is that palestinians will be safer if you vote for harris. as a queer woc, with so many friends and family whose well-being is at risk, i will feel more betrayed by you than by the people who vote for trump, bc we are supposed to take care of each other, and yet you'd rather watch us burn than do the uncomfortable thing. abstaining is nothing but a selfish, holier-than-thou, performative act. if you abstain, then you are actively causing harm, and if he wins because of it, those of us who can use our common sense will never forget how much you fucked us over. if he wins, more people (including palestinians) are going to get hurt, and that blood will be on your hands. do the uncomfortable thing. it's a better show of moral integrity than abstaining will ever be

Yeah you're right. It WOULD be pretty fucked up if you were a swan but you were raised by ducks and you grew up never seeing another swan or even knowing that such a thing as a swan even existed so you just thought you were a duck with something super wrong with it.
