Ok so I'm the 2nd anon that asked about the Hell bunny dress. Don't you think it should be up to the person wearing it to decide if its Lolita? It just seems unfair to box them into so many rules it barely allows selfexpression. I just dont understand why some Lolitas are so STRICT about rules. I know some of them are necesary like length, modesty&petticoat but with things like design, shouldnt that be up to the wearer to decide? Hope Im not being rude or making anyone upset

Not necessarily. Some things are Lolita and some things are not Lolita and that’s why there are guidelines in place. If someone wore black booty shorts, a black shirt that said “American Eagle” across the front, and black flip-flops and said that what they were wearing was goth just because it was all black, would that make it true? Absolutely not. Because it’s not just the color black that makes something goth, there are other design elements that go along with it. It’s the same with Lolita. There are a lot of factors that make something Lolita or not Lolita. There are plenty of places for self expression, but there are also things that should remain the same or similar throughout for something to actually be Lolita. And if you want to wear something that expresses yourself but it’s not Lolita that is absolutely okay! Nobody is saying “Don’t ever wear this no matter what.” We’re just saying that it is not Lolita and if you were to wear it, don’t say it’s Lolita because saying it is when it really isn’t can be insulting.To quote lolitafashion.org “…remember that coordinating a lolita outfit is a bit like making a cake. You can take away or replace a couple of ingredients, but if you take away the butter, the sugar, and the milk, it just stops being cake.”
