My #1 Kung Fu film of all time
So, we’re just about at my number 1 pick. I look forward to the discussion it brings. Are there any of my picks that you though absolutely didn’t belong on this list? I am looking back and even now I’d move some of these up or down or possibly remove altogether!

There are so many other great action scenes in this movie. But the final match pits real life brothers Lau Kar Wing and Lau Kar Leung and it stand out as the best. The full 18 Legendary weapons of China are utilized and it is spectacular to watch the speed, timing, force and precision of their choreography.

Like all old kung fu trailers- this is epic. You start to wonder, “are they showing the whole movie?” But I can’t help but love them all. The dazzling display in this trailer never ceases to amaze me.

#2 Legendary Weapons of China
Tumblr media
We’ve reached number two! Legendary Weapons of China (1982) was a late edition for me, I did not grow up watching this movie. The plot revolves around the time of the Boxer Rebellion. Factions of the rebellion, The Maoshan, Spiritual Boxers and Magic Fighters are dispatched to locate a traitor to their cause. Action ensues. The cast has everyone you’d expect Alexander Fu Sheng, Kara Hui, Lau Kar Leung  and Gordon Liu. This is a rare outing where Leung act as the film’s hero. Like Mad Monkey Kung Fu, Leung demonstrates clearly why he is the father of modern action fight choreography. The movie opens with a dizzying display and  demonstration of all 18 legendary weapons of kung fu. This movie is hard for western audiences to grasp as the fantastical “magic” elements seem silly, But all of this is tied to Chnese history. If you are a fan of kung fu films, dive into China’s history and you’ll see why this movie and kung fu films as a genre is a celebration of the Chinese Culture. The movie is important. Watch it.  It deserves this spot.

#3 Pedicab Driver (1989) Directed and fight choreographed by Sammo Hung. It stars Hung Max Mok and a glorious mix of Hong Kong actors who had long careers like Corey Yuen, Lam Ching Ying, Meng Hoi, Dick Wei, Eric Tsang and so many more. It follows the life of pedicab drivers and focuses mainly on Max Mok's character falling in love with a prostitute and subsequent fight with her pimp and henchmen. 2 fights make this film stand out above the rest. The first one is an extended sequence where Sammo accidentally crashes through a casino window and must answer to its owner played by the legendary Lau Kar Leung. They fight to a standstill empty handed with both using the powerful Hung Fist but thins get crazy once staffs are thrown into the mix. The speed, power and precision of is breathtaking. The 2nd fight is he end fight between Billy Chow and Sammo. It started with Sammo fighting some of the henchmen and finally moving to Chow. It is the power and brutality of this sequence that is awesome. Sammo is a human wrecking ball before getting his ass handed to him by Chow until Sammo lands a lucky kick. This is a very underrated film. Please get your hands on a copy.

Here’s # 4!
I have zero shame Jackie is on this list so much. His three movies before Drunken Master 2? Twin Dragons, Crime Story and  City Hunter. I think they are entertaining films, but not nearly his best work. So, along comes Drunken Master 2. It was a long shot revisiting the character that catapulted him to superstardom. But his gamble paid off. He is believable as a twenty something with Shaw Bros. legend, Ti Lung, playing his father.
Lau Kar Leung was set to direct and started the film but mid-way there were  artistic differences and Jackie took over the production. Interestingly enough, Leung still gets the directing credit. The fights are great with Jackie fighting Lau Kar Leung, a fish monger whose style is Choy Li Fut, a gang of axe wielding henchman and master kicker-Ken Lo. It’s amazing stuff.
I usually give synopsis’s  of films but i’m not gonna do it for this one! You should have seen the damn movie already!
