It has been such a great second semester! I got to find out about a lot of new different artist and design projects through lectures and workshop class. This semester our main topic throughout is all about food and different ways how food can be interpreted it within design.
Our main studio workshop was about creating a recipe. It could be any type of recipe, doesn’t necessary need to be recipe of food, and it can be as straightforward as a recipe or as abstract as you want. I think it was a great concept to create any type of recipe we wanted, I got to be very creative in ways of recipe concept, layout concept and design as well. I was able to look through many different artists as inspirations and look through other recipes inspirations. I liked that we had this project the whole semester, so there was a lot of time to have trial and error, which I did a lot. My first initial concept idea was quietly different towards my final design, which I think shows a lot of progress and growing in myself as a creative designer. It was also pretty great that we had to think how we can combine all the final work together as a class to learn to be able to work in a big group and have that collaborations.
The online Tumblr journal again was a really great source. Since each class was doing different projects it was even more interesting to look through Tumblr as everyone was looking through different artist and designers and seeing their work in progress. Seeing what and how they are thinking towards their designs process is really interesting and lets you learn as well on how to perceive different things. It is also a great place for me to post my process, research, inspirations, lectures etc for me to be able to acknowledge the things I have done and what expand my interest and have learned throughout the semester.

100 Questions Book
It was super exciting to get my hands on the printed 100 Questions book. Being a part of the team behind the book was a really great experience. Seeing something evolve from an idea into a tangible object is very rewarding. Pushing a trolley full of books was almost equally as rewarding.

WEEK 13 - FOOD EVENT In the last week we all got together and showcased what our interpretation of the topic food final projects. It was great to see everyone's work and how they created their interpretations, especially that each class had a different topic approaches. Was nice to see how creative everyone was in ways they developed the projects using different materials and concept ideas!

FINAL RECIPE!
For this project I wanted to do a play on Future Human recipe. The idea was that in the future there might not be a single race anymore and that everyone will the same yet mixed in culture. With that I played with the idea that in the future we are manufactured in a factory and then needed to be built at home.
The final imagery concept I had for the recipe was using Barbie dolls as if it’s in the process of being made in the factory. I wanted to have an eerie, real vibe towards them to showcase that were all different but as robots.
I decided to do a mini hangtag catalogue type recipe instruction, since everyone will be mixed race their would be many different recipes to create the human, so it would be a series of recipes, and this one is a recipe version out of a number of others. In this recipe it is an instruction for a 0.45 female version.
The material of the final I decided to use a clear paper plastic that’s mounted on a red paper for the cover and text on white and black paper. It brought out the imagery into a dynamic and eerie atmosphere. The size towards the end was decided to be 7.4cm x 21cm that consist of 4 pages. A black eyelet and a silver hinge ring to attach within the binder combine the whole thing, to bring a more polish and manufacture feel towards the layout.

PRODUCTION
For the final we had to print out 25 of our recipe so that everyone will have it in their binder. I think this is such a great idea as we are able to see how everyone went and how they interpret the recipe concept. Its also great to keep something from everyones as a memory.
It took me quite fast to create all 25 recipe. I printed all pages in an A3 paper in a curtain amount, I then mounted the clear plastic imagery on top of the text, then cut it out then one by one gave it a punch hole then the eyelet.

DETAILS DETAILS DETAILS
Towards the end I had to decide how to combine all 4 pages into one. There was a few way I could do it, but thought to go with using the eyelets. It suited with the whole concept, it gave it a finishing touch and also it is more durable in the long run. I then needed to decide how to connect the recipe with everyone else in the binder. I decided to use a hinged ring as it was easy to add on, however I did wish that I could've found a hinged ring the same size as I had for the coil ring as it fitted better within the binder.

DESIGN FUTURES Bioplastic Fantastic by Johanna Schemer “If we don’t start imagining alternative futures, we wouold be stuck with the future we’ve been given and that may not be the best option” - Andy Johanna Schemer’s graduate project Bioplastic Fantastic explores new innovative products made from materials in the fields of bio and nanotechnology. She created seven products, all of them producing nutrients and energy that are necessary for our survival, such as protein fibre and vitamins. This was an example of a speculative designer who imagines what our future could look like as a result of expanding technologies.  Sources: https://www.frameweb.com/news/bioplastic-fantastic-by-johanna-schmeer https://vimeo.com/94803319

PROGRESS - FINALIZATION
So in the end I manage to pull everything together into 2 looks- either the red and black or the pinks. I think i will go with the red and black one as it fits with my theme best with the whole different biracial theme so that theres no “skin color” for people to emphasis towards. Now i need to figure out how id like the final hole punch to look like when combined together in the binder.

PROGRESS
After playing around with the stock I had to redesign the layout of the recipe- as from my initial idea of having a accordion style booklet was not working out with the clear plastic paper and also to have to print 25 it will be too time consuming and costly.  Since my recipe is like a 1 of many different recipe i decided to make a hangtag pamphlet layout out of it, so like the idea there would be other recipes in other pamphlets. I think its still somewhat interesting and looks i think more like a instruction type booklet. it also would work out well with combining it in the binder with everyone eases work by just having the punch whole in the corner.
From, previous experimentation I liked how the clear plastic look when its glued on a normal paper- i like the grainy, messy effect the glue makes when sticked together which suited the whole vibe i wanted to portray in this recipe.  Im still not too sure however which color pallet to go through with for the final- i liked the black and white more as it suited the theme but the color dolls in a way showed more depth.

Week 9- Open Design & Creative Commons
This week we looked at the notion of “open” design, in other words, design where the information is open for the public to use and adapt upon as long as the user complies with the artist’s policy. All licenses require proper attribution, and the least restrictive license only requires attribution.  The different types of creative commons are:
Attribution CC BY: This is the golden child of CC. It lets you tweak, remix, and distribute even for commercial use, so long as there is attribution.
Attribution-ShareAlike CC BY-SA: As long as you credit the original poster and license it under identical terms if you have made modifications, you are good to go. Wikipedia uses this form.
Attribution-NoDerivs CC BY-ND: This license allows for redistribution, commercial and non-commercial, as long as it is passed along unchanged and with proper attribution.
Attribution-NonCommercial CC BY-NC: You can tweak, modify and distribute as long as it is done non-commercially.
Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike CC BY-NC-SA: This license lets you remix, tweak, and build upon the original work non-commercially, as long as you license your new creation under identical terms and credit them.
Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs CC BY-NC-ND: The most restrictive of the licenses, you can only download and share the work non-commercially while giving credit.
A great exaple of Open Design that we have all been using at RMIT for our publications is unsplash. Where we use all of the beautiful images for free!

WEEK 9 - WORKSHOP - Recipe Progress I printed out 2 of my concepts into mini prototypes. Discussing with people in class I think I'm going forward with the Barbie dolls look- as it brought that eeriness and robotic future vibe that I was going for and everyone seemed to be more interested with the dolls vibe. With that I'm going to look for more diverse Barbie dolls and do more photoshoot to get a more dynamic imagery and really play around with creating an interesting imagery. I might also change the paper layout of it cause I think printing 25 of the a5 in that length can be a bit pricey and draining. But will see with that. I also have to look through the right type and text that will be a better harmony with the imagery. And think if I'd like more text or less.

Recipe Concept 1 - Doll Factory I sketched some different ideas I would like for the factory/manufacture look and sketched played around with how it would work in different paper layout design.  I then started to illustrate the factories and play with different colors and faces for the dolls. I was drawn most by the cartoon tv show Dexter the Laboratory with the whole cartoon illustration vibe and the movie The Grand Budapest Hotel for the flat lay and the pink color vibe. I liked the soft pastel pinks look of the hotel- but I think it didn't really work out well with my factory vibe so i played with a soft blue/green color.
