Post-Modernism
In Friday’s lecture we looked at post-modernism design, a response to modernism and a controversial art movement from 1970 to 1990. It brought about news ideas of freedom in design and consisted of bright bold colours, asymmetry, pattern and geometric shapes as key elements and principles. It especially focused on ‘form over function’.
The Memphis group were a group of Italian designers and architects that made a series of highly influential products in the 1980’s, led by Ettore Sottass. The Memphis style lamp above, as an example of a product with form over function, focusing more on the design, colour and patterns rather than the functionality of the lamp itself.
After looking further into post-modernist designs, I realised that a lot of the designs I had made were heavily influenced by this period, which is really cool and interesting to see. I really admire the use of bold colours and geometric shapes in order to make a really effective design.

Conceptualism
The concept is more important that the artwork itself
We also shortly looked at conceptualism in the lecture. Conceptualism is considered to be extremely important in contemporary artworks and design, where the meaning and intention behind the artwork or design is more important that the artwork itself.
An example of this being Robert Rauschenberg’s ‘This Is a Portrait of Iris Clert If I Say So, 1961’. A plain telegram with the phrase ‘Iris Clert 28 Ruedusthonore Paris’, with no actual portrait of Iris Clert.
The whole idea of conceptualism is really fascinating as we become interested in the artists/designers intention behind their work, rather than the work itself.

Week 8 Lecture
In the lecture, we continued to build on notions of the grid. We had discussed some of the designers in the lecture as well.
Luca Bartolomeo de Pacioli (c. 1447–1517) - the Milanese compass-wielding typographer
Francesco Tornielloda Novara (c. 1490–1589)
Francesco Torniello da Novara (c. 1490 – 1589) was a Milanese typographer, writer and Franciscan friar who became known for applying geometric specifications to Latin capital letters fonts. His works were mostly about adopting Latin alphabet. He has designed an 18x18 grid which served as a coordinate system for his geometrical fonts. He is also the first typographer to define the point as the unit of measurement in typography.
Romain du Roi - the first commissioned (i.e. designed) typeface which was developed in France between 1692 and 1702
From all these modernism learning, I had learnt that typography is not an easy thing to do. What previous designers had designed or created was all the treasure for our younger generation designers. We are lucky because we are using what had been already well designed. What we are going to do is to apply them well in our designs, to create better designers and combinations.

Week10 In the workshop we learned about "franken-models" or rapid prototyping, which are intended as inexpensive and immediate "sketches" that allow the designer to quickly bring ideas into reality. We all rapid prototypes using only the materials at hand (including cardboard and other paper-scraps) before sharing them with the group. We developed both technical "making" skills as well as valuable "soft-skills" for presenting and discussing our projects. The 1-3 pics. The first photo is the cover of my zine. I rolled the paper. I want to show our life is like a white paper. No matter what we do , the things we’ve been through, it will always leave some marks on it. But that’s why we became more powerful. The second photo represents we’ve been torte apart. But the in our deeply heart, we just we. No one can change us. The fingerprint shows everyone in this world is unique. Sometimes we will lost in the ‘maze’, but if you can find the key, it will lead you out of it. The third one shows the window of our heart. I simply folded the sheets of the paper, blank side facing up, use a paper punch and thread them together with a ribbon. Then fold the paper. It looks like flowers. I also sketched some patterns. The last one is rose’s zine. I really like her’s. She wants to do a zine about fashion, so this zine looks like a coat. It’s not easy to do this in a short time.

Week 7 workshop In today’s workshop, we looked for the alphabet in our campus. It was not easy to find a letter in the building, so I looked up. I found some alphabet in the sky or on the top of the building. Surprised me, there’s a lot. The pictures in order shows the 🌱 B, 🌱 P, 🌱 G, 🌱 E, 🌱 J, 🌱 S, 🌱 I, 🌱 T, 🌱 W.

Week6 workshop In today’s workshop, we got our feedback. The grade is not as good as I think. So our group wrote down our what should we do to improve next time, also the wrong thing we should escape. Then, we use color paper with different shape to create a alphabet. The last picture is our group’s work. At first we thought we can only use on shape of color paper to make. When we struggled at we don’t have enough paper. Andy came to us and delivered some blue rectangular paper. And said we can use any shape of color paper to do the alphabet. Then we added some blue paper which make the work more easier. I really like the combination of these two color. Cause the color looks full of energy. The three pics in the middle are other groups work. Their work are colorful. I really like the little blue image. ( I don’t know who it is, but it looks like Batman.ψ(∇´)ψ)

week5 workshop Glad Andy printed out our artwork, otherwise I would never know what it looks like. I think mine looks quit good. Especially the color and tone. In the workshop our sticked our artwork on revolving door and when people pass by, they can see our artwork. Our classmates did the stage one which is interesting. Cause there’s a arrow beside and also an eye. It’s make you feel like you should follow the arrow and see what things up right there. And I quite like the elevator one. I just abstracted when I was using the elevator. After that I realized, I should do more. If I can go back to first week, I would be better to manage my time. I want try in different materials and more focus on the letter instead of background. I also forgot to put a question mark on my question, I thought it was not that important or because of lazy, which is so stupid. But, failure teaches success. I believe as long as I keep doing it, I will get progress!

Week 4 During Easter break, I find out 🌈🌈🌈in my life. Life is full of beauty, sometimes you just need a eye to find out the views. #1 The first pic is when I run in the morning, there’s a café by my side. And the colorful chairs and table attracted my eye. #2 I walked through Swanston Street found this colorful wall. I never thought this silver building has colorful in the back 😍 #3 I took this picture in my old homestay which is in St Kilda. This is the front door. That day was a sunny day, the glass is so pretty, and the light was perfect. #4 I drew the color wheel. When I washing the dish, I thought it was beautiful.

Week 4 On Friday ‘s workshop. I made this with my group (Rin, Yasmin and Kezya) We use different ways to make a sentence with whole alphabet. ‘Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs’. We use thread to made the sentence in the first pic. Its looks easy but we took a long time to make. Cause the thread was hard to do in a shape, we can only winding it. Rin did the great job in this work. The second pic made of water. We put brush into water, then wrote the sentence on the ground. It was so hot that day. After we wrote the words, the water was just evaporated. So everyone were writing the word as quick as possible. We were all like busy bees. But finally we did it!! Nothing is not as easy as it seems. However, we all had a great time on that day and I enjoyed the class so much.

Week 3 ‘Hello! My question is..’ This is the question I’ve been thinking about. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 ‘Does simple design can be classic?’❓❓❓ 🌻I was attracted by popular Instagramers who always post their house in different decoration styles. I found they like layout simple design into their house. Then I went to IKEA, I found that most of the products are simple. But I think that’s not enough, so I went to different popular furniture stores that were from Italy , Germany and Northern Europe. The shop assistant said the best selling products are always looks simple and comfortable. 🌻Not only furniture. The clothes are the same. UNIQLO is the most popular clothing store in China. You can see it in almost every mall. But I think the clothes there are not too fancy. In opposite, it’s simple, but still a lot of people wanting to buy. During the research, I found people like simple design more than other design. For example, Burberry. The best selling clothing product is the coat. Which is the most simple and classic one. 🌻Japan’s design is my favorite. No matter the indoor design or storage, advertising, graphic design can always absorb me. They do not use fancy things but normal, simple. For example, MUJI. My favorite store. The color is simple, even they don’t have any logos, but it’s so classic that when people see the products, they will know it’s from MUJI. That’s my question.

Week 2 In the Friday Lecture, we were asking to do the ‘Hello. My question is..’ At first , I want to ask the general question ‘ why design?’ ‘What does design mean?’ Then, I realize it’s not the really question that I want to ask, it has too many information in it. So, I looking for some design around me. I suddenly had questions show up in my mind. How do people have so many ways to see a design? Why we see a design in different way? Are there something effect us to see design? Then I wrote these questions in to an opening way. These are the questions that I want to ask.

There’s a design week in NGV. I went to the book area. There was a lot of designer and exquisite books. I looked different type of book. They’re amazing! The designer use special way to reveal books. The first pic is about book cover. The books has been carving into different shapes. The designer very focused on the detail. Which is so delicate. The third pic is the content not shows up in a traditional way, but through rotate, repeat ,zoom in,zoom out. The words or signs creates the new shape or lines. It’s the first time that I think letters can be so different and pretty. The 4-5 pics is a booklet about vegetables. I am a vegetarian, so I really love this. Vegetables no longer be the minor part. It can also be pretty and delicious. And the designer through color to classified veges which is really enjoyable on visual. The last pic is very new to me. It’s not a traditional way to making books. There’s a blue and white porcelain bowl. Which I’m very familiar with. The cards are the photos of Chinese traditional bowls and vases. Looks so nice and exquisite. Those books are definitely awesome. Even though there’s a lot pics I didn’t put in. Includ our teacher’s book ^o^
