avengers and their preferred beverages

tony- this man drinks alcohol for breakfast lunch and dinner. 9 am? scotch. 12 pm? whiskey. 4 pm? straight vodka

natasha- tea. i have this never ending hc in my head that nat drinks an ungodly amount of tea. like this woman has a collection of tea in the pantry (which she shares with no one)

steve- room temperature beer. i love this man with my whole heart but steve literally drinks warm coors light. like on occasion it’s actually cold but the team has learned their lesson about receiving beer from steve

bruce- water, specifically la criox. no one understands why he likes them he just does. literally buys boxes worth of la criox and other sparkling waters. his favorite la criox flavor is grapefruit. tony once took a sip expecting some type of alcohol and almost threw up

thor- caprisun. peter got him hooked and ever since then, drinks them like all the time. demands there be a constant stock of caprisun in the fridge whenever he visits from asgard. his addiction to them is slightly concerning because he goes through half a box a day

clint- coffee. just black coffee. takes it with no sugar or cream. i mean how else’s is he suppose to keep up with his kids. clint has a staggering caffeine addiction and along with coffee e also heavily relies on 5 hour energy

bucky: this man drinks coca~cola like it’s no ones business. only drinks it in the glass bottles because it reminds him of the 40s. tasted cherry coke once and almost gagged because it was so ass.

sam: wine aunt. i will not be taking any arguments on this. sam drinks wine and it’s the funniest thing ever. loves wine and his favorite is a rosé. takes the team wine tasting every so often and it’s secretly one of the teams favorite thing to do

wanda: i love wanda to death but she probably drinks like prune juice or something because vision told her it was healthy.

peter: milk. this boy drinks milk at every meal and it’s revolting. i mean he’s chugging glasses upon glasses of milk. aunt may goes through a gallon of milk like within three days because peter drinks so much milk. fully heartedly believes it will make his bones unbreakable

vision: nothing lol. he’s a robot

loki: apple juice. like it’s actually so adorable, he loves it so much and it makes everyone laugh so hard. here’s this big scary magic man who drinks apple juice. and I bet he drinks it straight from the carton too

meta: implicit memory

Now that we've talked about how Steve recognised Bucky, let's talk a little about implicit memory for Bucky in recognising Steve.

As I alluded to in my previous TED talk about Bucky's ECT (here - warning, angst) emotional memory is very important.

Just how important is emotional memory? Here's a nerdy fact about a weird condition called "Capgras Syndrome".

Capgras syndrome, originally described by Capgras and Reboul-Lachaux in 1923, consists of a delusional belief that a person has been replaced by imposters, look-alikes, or doubles. (...) some authors proposing a deep right frontal lesion disconnecting it from the temporal and limbic areas with a subsequent disturbance in a sense of familiarity of people and places. (Case report here)

In layman terms, it happens when there is a disconnect between the part of your brain that recognises faces, and the part of your brain that stores memory, including emotions. Because the disconnect between recognition ("hey that's my partner") and emotion ("but I don't feel any love in reaction") is so big, and often coupled with a lack of emotional inhibition ("no I must be overthinking it"), they get into an escalating loop of "that looks my partner but I don't love them" and eventually rationalise this with "that must mean someone is impersonating my partner".

How does this relate to Bucky? Well he's the reverse of this syndrome. This phenomenon is commonly seen in delirious or brain-injured people - they may not exactly recall their loved one, but they instinctively feel a sense of comfort being with them.

As I discussed in the ECT meta, the ECT wipes his memories, favouring explicit memories (recall of events) over implicit memory (like emotions). He presumably receives extra conditioning to reduce any emotional changes during missions. He is unlikely to be ever given the context for a mission, and he's never needed his explicit memories to achieve his goals.

But suddenly, he's hit by a completely alien experience. Steve calling his name triggers emotions that he has not experienced for a long time - warmth, affection, tenderness and intimacy - because during his time in Hydra, most of his emotions are based around dread and humiliation and hostility. He's never had a target evoke such a strong positive emotional response, a very nostalgic response, yet he's unable to connect it to any memory. Abruptly, the machine glitches. The machine wants an explanation.

Pierce tells him that he knew Steve from another mission earlier in the week, and Bucky doubles down. The disconnect between these intense emotions and the absence of memory couldn't be reconciled. There's been case reports of Capgras delusion leading to homocidal acts, so this disconnect isn't something that the brain can dismiss easily. Bucky is struggling to make sense of all these conflicting hints of something being terribly wrong, but they don't give him the chance to work things through.

There's this interesting meta about the resemblance of Chris Evans to a young Robert Redford, and that might be the key to why Bucky was looking to Alexander Pierce for guidance and explanation, because he looked like Steve. Bucky is trying to hold onto any sense of familiarity in a life that skips months or years in between missions, but his trust in Pierce is upheaved by a man he can't recognise but knows he should.

Hydra puts him through ECT again, and in general traumas to the brain affect recent memories more than distant memories. This means on the Helicarrier when Steve appeals to Bucky, he has no recollection of their Causeway fight, hence the complete lack of expression when Steve speaks to him.

At the end of the fight, Steve returns to speak with Bucky. I’m going to resist the urge to analyse the entire scene because it will just dissolve into a gush about Sebastian’s acting. As soon as Steve addresses Bucky with, “You know me,” Bucky’s movements become hesitant. The Winter Soldier doesn’t know how to deal with these surges of emotions he has never experienced before, and Bucky is trying to break through the conditioning but can’t remember why.

The iconic phrase hits Bucky with a load of emotions so powerful and nostalgic that it stops him in his tracks. I think this scene is purposefully left open to interpretation. For me, I don’t think Bucky recalls Steve so much as he emotionally connects with what Steve has been shouting at him, “You’ve known me your whole life. You are my friend.” He still doesn’t know this person (because explicit memory being suppressed) but the emotions match what Steve has been saying. If that was the case, who was Steve, and who was he himself? Why was he told to kill Steve? Why does it hurt so much to see Steve bleed?

And why is it when Steve falls, Bucky feels like he is the one drowning?

it all started when he asked you to join his band

your band lasted a week and only had one gig, it was for rodrick’s parents

they somehow permitted you to sleepover almost every other day, you practically lived at their house

If the marauders were songs

James: Ophelia by The Lumineers

James is such a free spirited person. He loves to mess around and he loves the adventurous nature of having the wind blow through his hair as he rides on a hippogriff. I think this song captures a carefree nature with the best but at the same time with the lyrics it gives a loving, caring, beautiful persona that James definitely has. You’re happy to go along with that, he brings an even brighter spark and spirit to your life.

Sirius: R U mine ? By Arctic Monkeys

Okay, so Sirius is adventurous like James but in a different way. He takes interest into muggle thrills like rollercoasters and motorbikes. This song takes the leather jacket, badass vibe that Sirius carries with him everywhere but it also shows the need for love and approval he wants through the bad boy persona that he gives. You give him the love he wants and he returns it but he still can feel as though you’ll leave him because you’ll want someone better. He just wants you to be his forever and you can confirm you always will be.

Remus: Half the World Away by Oasis

Remus has been damaged by his past, present and the idea of a future as a werewolf. He would pay anything to have a fresh start in his life where he didn’t have the burden of being a ‘monster’ on his shoulders but he can’t do that. He is young but his mind is older than he can control because of his experiences. He has a very soft quality about him but believes himself to be horrible but that’s where you come in. You make him feel okay, you make him feel like he’s alright with being who he is because that’s the him that you love.

As a collective the marauders are this song. The lyrics describe them perfectly and being part of the marauders would be fast paced through spontaneous nightly trips to the kitchens or to the black lake for a late night swim yet somehow calm and structured though nights after a full moon. The marauders are enigmas and they are amazing like that.

sam wilson appreciation post.

there’s no one in the mcu more caring, and gentle, and empathetic, and kind. he is the best friend everyone needs. someone who will call you out on your bs. someone who is kind enough and loves you enough to tell you what you need to hear even if you don’t wanna hear it. someone who treats you like family and gives you a place to stay. someone who listens and takes ones feelings into consideration. he’s the one you call one when you’re in trouble and need help.

sam wilson is just a good man. i say it all the time, i know. i can’t help it.

and they way he interacts w everyone in the show just makes my heart explode. he tries to reason with his enemies. john walker deserved nothing more than to rot in cell, but sam still wanted to talk things out. he comforts bucky, yes, but he also tells him what he needs to hear. he’s there for his family and doesn’t leave them behind despite the war he’s fighting against the flagsmashers. he believes in karli. ugh, i could go on and on about this man.

and bucky barnes. let’s talk abt character development for a moment. first off, he smiled genuinely too many this episode. i cry. anyways, the way he recognized his wrong and APOLOGIZED. HE APOLOGIZED. writers and directors always just kinda blow it off and leave the viewers assuming that the characters have made up and that it’s all good. but bucky apologized to sam. that- that is what i’m here for. as a poc that means so much, bc a lot of non poc don’t even make an effort to understand, to try and empathize. he tried. and he did.

lastly. i love this show. i love these men. bucky barnes is beautiful. sarah wilson deserves the world. i wanna take aj and cass out for ice cream. sam wilson was lookin like a snack and servin us lots of beautiful melanin.

yeah, sam wilson is my hero. sam wilson is captain america.
