previews of the latest ATLA comic just got dropped and I can't believe we've gone from Mai covering up her dad being involved with an attempt to overthrow Zuko and throwing Ozai's abuse in Zuko's face to her suddenly being anti imperialism and being told she actually cares about people...

What is it with people thinking that just because Katara forgave Zuko, she would automatically extend that to anyone else from that group? Zuko groveled. He pleaded. He acted on any chance to make amend with her. Do you really see Mai or Azula putting in that works? She might- MIGHT-give Ty Lee a chance, but the other two? Yeah... no. That's not happening. Imagine what an apology from Mai would look like. "Ugh! Are you still harping on the time I tried to throw a knife through your eye? You lived, didn't you? I'm sorry, or whatever. Move on."

It's also that the way that Mai's apathy and sadism manifest is inherently linked to her living under fascism. Like, of course she doesn't want to hear Zuko's life story when the story is about a lifetime of abuse and depersonalization under the very regime that Mai has helped support.
You also can't really divorce her "joke" from her growing up so close to Zuko's family who also treat him like there is no room for him emotionally. Like, Mai says she doesn't want to hear his life story and yeah yeah she was just joking, but his sister tells him he's too dramatic and his father tells him he's too weak and like when is someone who is supposed to love him going to be willing to listen? Do they have to be a paid therapist?
Like damn, remember when Zuko was terrified of asking for forgiveness from his uncle who has shown him nothing but caring because he's been told so often that his emotional needs don't matter? Remember when the gaang had to repeatedly tell him that he wasn't a burden on them?
"She doesn't have to be his therapist."
Remember when Zuko asked Mai if she didn't hate him any more in the finale?
Do you think someone who grows up like that can ever be sure, in a relationship like that?
But it's just a joke, yeah okay.

It's actually so funny how fast that "I respect Zuko and Katara's friendship" person jumped to "the bad boy doesn't always get the girl." Like, what a weird thing to say about a friendship you supposedly respect. Why did Zuko suddenly become the bad boy trying to seduce good girl Katara if they have such a respectable friendship? Almost like you don't actually respect their friendship at all...

Studies show that approaching youth with a bystander-intervention model is actually a lot more effective for reducing sexual assault, and it is also more enthusiastically received than programs that bill themselves as anti-rape.
We can tell youth that they are basically “rapists waiting to happen” (anti-rape initiative), or we can tell them that we know they would intervene if they saw harm happening to someone and we want to help empower them to do that (bystander intervention). The kids jump in with both feet for the latter! It was amazing to see children (and young boys in particular) excited to do this work and engage their creativity with it. Also, studies show that not only do they go on to intervene, but they also do not go on to sexually assault people themselves. Bystander intervention also takes the onus off the person being targeted to deter rape and empowers the collective to do something about it. It answers the question in the room when giggling boys are carrying an unconscious young woman up the stairs at a house party, and people are not sure how to respond and are waiting for “someone” to say or do something.
