Blog 10: First semester of nursing school:
My first semester in nursing school is coming to an end and I can say it's definitely been a real challenge. No sleep, no regular meals and no time for myself. Time is seriously the most important factor that has been triggering me since day one of the semester. I wasn't sure how to manage time due to all the studying. I wasn't even sure which study method is best for me. About two months within starting the program I finally started to understand my method, which is rewriting my notes after every lecture and highlighting the main points. Another amazing way I figured out how to study I said by finding a study group this helped me understand the concepts much better. “ If you find a good study study group, hold on to the most for dear life” ( Andrew 2016). Furthermore, since I started the first semester, in the beginning all I was thinking about is my grades, but moving further into the semester I realized how important it is to really comprehend every little thing since these patients are relying on us to give them the best patient care. Most of all starting the first semester it's been really overwhelming, all the stress can really get a person sick and can't function properly. “34.6 percent felt overwhelmed and stressed by schoolwork and other commitments” ( Andrew 2016). This semester I really learned how to manage stress and not to get overwhelmed. I learned how to calm myself and believe in myself. First semester really taught me a lot about myself and I'm ready to move on for the bigger challenge that nursing school can bring.

blog post #10 What I learned my first semester in nursing school:
When I was preparing to come to nursing school, I was very nervous thinking about all the non stop studying I would have to do. Now that I started, I now know the truth about nursing school. The truth is, is that nursing school is difficult and requires courage, hard work, and determination. Nursing school is extremely hard, but for me I know it will be all worth it because I am confident that one day I will be a great nurse, striving to improve healthcare. Nursing involves two of my favorite aspects which is helping people and learning science. These are what I have a passion for, and one day I will have a career that’s rewarding and gratifying. There a few things I learned my first semester in nursing school that will always stick with me. I learned the nursing process, how to perform a health assessment, and how to provide my future patients with sympathy and empathy. Aside from all these, I learned the basic concepts a nurse needs to have. All nurses need to provide efficient healthcare to the best of their ability as well as supporting the patient. The most important factor that I learned was time management skills, organization, and prioritization. Time management skills is something that’s very important in nursing school, and is a great skill to learn in life. Learning how to manage my time enables me to make a schedule for when I need to study, sleep, and do personal things. Organization is the key to success, without organization nursing school won’t be manageable (Ameritech College of Healthcare, 4 years ago). Lastly, learning how to prioritize helps me a lot in nursing school by knowing what needs to get done right away and what can wait. Prioritization is a skill that can be very helpful when in practice. All these skills that I learned in my first semester helps me from overwhelming myself with all the work that needs to be done in nursing school. Looking forward to knowledge and skills that I will learn during my upcoming semesters.

Blog #10: First semester of nursing school coming to an end...
As the first semester comes to an end, I reflect back on the short, but never ending 4 months of this semester and what I learned as a nursing student. I remember before starting the program, I was talking with a few previous LIU nursing graduates who all warned me to mentally prepare myself for “non-stop studying, sleep deprivation, and friendship isolation.” To say I was nervous is an understatement. For someone who is naturally an anxious person and whose biggest weakness is time management, I had felt the pressure kick in early. However, during these 4 months I learned that my thoughts could be my greatest weakness, but also my greatest advantage. I struggled many nights to retain the information taught in lectures and maintain my priorities to study and put my Saturday nights on hold. Nevertheless, I also learned the significance of a support system. Those people in your life that keep your drive going and remind you why you chose this path. I have learned to view pressure as a means for personal growth, and not weaken myself mentally. Furthermore, I learned how crucial it is to communicate with your classmates and help one another succeed. I can strongly say that this program has lifted me out of my comfort zone and allowed my introverted self to socialize more and not be afraid to speak out. I learned that my goal isn’t to just be a good nurse, but to continue striving to be the best one I can be. If I had any advice for incoming nursing students, I would say to take it one step at a time and try not to mentally overwhelm yourself in thinking you cant do it. Stay organized, prioritize, and never forget your purpose in doing this! If at any time you feel defeated, don’t be afraid to ask for help from peers or even teachers. I’m definitely excited to see what the second semester will bring and look forward to taking on the challenges and improve myself.

Blog #10: My first semester in nursing school taught me...
“Nursing is a challenging yet incredibly rewarding career”( Chan,2018). During my undergraduate studies my classmates and I often discussed our next step after we graduated. Many of those steps led towards a career in the medical field. And honestly the bottom line was the money we would make. We got so excited quoting salaries. The reality of what it took to become a nurse came right after my acceptance letter arrived. This was going to be expensive!!  I felt like I was taking out a mortgage. I was a teeny bit nervous nonetheless I moved forward. The immense pressure and dedication that nursing school requires had me thinking if I really wanted to pursue this solely for money. So I spent time searching deeply as to why I really wanted to become a nurse. I would make money but would I be happy doing this work.  I reflected on my time as a hospital volunteer and how happy I was on the maternity/neonatal unit. I realized that helping new moms and being around the babies was fun for me.  I remember the wonderful nurses that I had at the birth of my own children and I wanted to do this!! I wanted to hand moms their new bundles of joy and I wanted to help them during their first days of mommyhood.  Those days can be a tad difficult for some mommies. I had found something about nursing that made me smile and that motivated me. I honestly believe that maternity/neonatal nursing is very rewarding and I wanted in.  Forbes (2012) put it so eloquently,“ when you combine your passion with something that’s useful to the world, that’s where you’ll find synergy. And that’s how you can make some money”.  I would get paid for doing something I really enjoyed!  As the end of my first semester draws closer, I am now clear about my main objective  and I  am hopeful about my next semester.

Blog #10: 1st semester of Nursing School
My first semester in nursing school is coming to an end and I can say that it has been a hectic one. I have learned so much about myself and various techniques I need to use in order to stay on top of my game. When it comes to studying, I have learned that rewriting my notes have helped me tremendously. This allows me to go over every topic and fill in any missing notes I had. I also used YouTube if I needed any clarification in certain topics. I believe I am a visual learning and looking at pictures was one way in which I understood a topic more. You must create habits that will produce productivity while in school. Four healthy habits are management of your time, studying smart, asking for help, and being proactive. (Murphy, 2015) Once enrolled in nursing school you must have a great support system that will push you everyday and remind you of why you want this career. I also found support in my classmates as we are all driven to learn and eventually become RN’s. Even though there is a lot of information being thrown at us we must remind ourselves that we are going to be responsible for someone else’s life. All details count and I have learned what it means to think critically. We must be able to look at all parts and focus on the priority when dealing with any situations. I am very excited and nervous about next semester but I believe that with my studying techniques I will do great!

Blog Post #10: Studying in Nursing School
My first semester of nursing school has been nothing short of eye opening. It has taught me a lot about myself and what I’m capable of not only as an individual, but as a student as well. Not knowing what to expect, I questioned my study techniques wondering if they would be enough to carry me through nursing school. Having my first degree in biomedical science, studying intense material was nothing knew for me. However, being a nurse means having someone’s life in your hands, so the pressure to do well and learn the information was at an all time high. In undergrad, I studied by re-writing my notes and reading them over several times. To my surprise, the way I study has been efficient when it comes to testing taking. A few ways I could improve my studying and information processing is really just starting to look at the material a few days earlier when preparing for a quiz or exam. I also believe that re-writing my notes the day I learn the material in class would be beneficial and has been proven to reinforce the information processing. Another way I could improve my learning and studying is by utilizing my preferred learning styles. My preferred learning styles according to North Carolina State University questionnaire are reflective, sensing, visual, and sequential (Felder, 2019). Transforming the information I learn and finding different resources that relay that information in my preferred styles will ultimately help me in the long run.

Blog #9: Reaping the Benefits
“Research shows that simply hiring diverse groups of people isn't enough: to get the benefits of diversity, companies need to train their employees and encourage open communication.” (Blackman, 2018). Throughout researching about the benefits of diversity, I have read many articles and websites that advocate for the benefit of hiring diverse staff but it is also equally just important to educate staff members on what diversity is and how to implement proper communication when dealing with patient that come from several backgrounds. The term diversity is such a broad topic and it can be dissected in so many ways. Diversity can be understood through race, gender, culture, religion, sexual affiliation, and so much more. I think that just having a diverse work environment is not enough. You may look like you are an accepting hospital or clinic on the outside but it is important that the staff members are also acting in appropriate ways that show their understanding of how to associate with diverse clients. Learning how to respect boundaries and the beliefs of others, how to properly approach patients with different backgrounds, how to accept a clients choices and behaviors without judgment are all important topics that need to be addressed when training employees. This, in return, will provide the environment with all the benefits of proper communication.

Blog 9: Disability inclusion
Diversity is a topic that expands beyond ethnicity. Individuals with disabilities have also been represented within this topic and studies have shown that those who fall into this category are left behind in the workforce. They are not fully represented and this does not give them the chance to showcase their skills as they also have equal performance ratings and rights. Expanding your talent pool enables for more motivation and effective production of work. There are many ways to increase the rates of hiring more people with disabilities. Making sure you revise your recruitment process is one way in which you improve with this issue. Another way is by making your workplace accessible so all feel welcomed instead of feeling dismissed. Incorporating assistive software and equipment in your facilities is another way in which you increase the population rate of people with disabilities. (Blackmen, 2018) Creating equal opportunities policies invites for more inclusion and supports the organizations culture. Diversity in the workplace can be very beneficial to all parties as it protects the rights and boost innovation.

Blog #9 Harassment policies:
“The MeToo movement has led a long overdue focus on sexual harassment and assault in Hollywood and beyond. This is a great time for businesses to revisit their own HR policies and make sure they’re doing all they can to stamp out sexual harassment and support those who have experienced it (Andrew Blackman 2018). The bare minimum, of course, is to have an official anti-harassment policy and a process for people to report any harassment, violence or other incidents that occur. But a truly supportive business will go beyond and take further steps, such as: 1) Make sure your HR staff are fully equipped to investigate allegations of harassment, taking them seriously and giving the necaessary support to the person reporting it. 2) Provide comprehensive training to employees to educate them on sexual harassment (Andrew Blackman 2018). 3) Create a full set of resources for people to access, helping them to understand sexual harassment how to recognize it, how to report it, and how to support colleagues who have experienced it.

Blog #9: Diverse Representation in Healthcare
“A diverse health care workforce will help to expand health care access for the underserved, foster research in neglected areas of societal need, and enrich the pool of managers and policymakers to meet the needs of a diverse populace”(Cohen et al, 2002).  The main goal of every healthcare facility is to ensure that it’s patients receive the best care. It is also very important that they provide culturally competent care. “ Cultural competent care denotes the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behavior required of a practitioner to provide optimal health care services to persons from a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds”(Cohen et al, 2002). It is not enough for these companies to just give lectures and workshops on the topic of diversity and culturally competent care. I believe the environment that the nurse works in should reflect her clients to some extent. Therefore, it is important that the staff has different ethnic and racial groups. When there are colleagues of varying backgrounds working together we become more aware of each others cultures and what is acceptable and what is not. These lessons become valuable and helpful when encountering patients whose cultures are not like ours.

Bridging the Age Gap- Blog Post #9
In the world we live in today, it’s easy to get caught up in the newest technologies and most recent advances in the workplace. Often, those of earlier generations get lost in the transition into these new technologies. It’s easier for those of the most recent generations to quickly adapt to advancing technology purely because we have been a part of the technological world since we were born. It’s important to implement strategies in which people from every generation feel included and equally valued for their part in the workplace. When we think of discrimination or diversity, we often picture those of different races, sexual preferences, or ethnical backgrounds. However, a large portion of discrimination also comes from the age gaps between individuals in the workplace (Blackman, 2018). There are things to be learned from those of every generation and having a balance of newer and older generations will ultimately benefit employees. Implementing strategies to include those of all ages in organizations is the next step and one that many workplaces have already set in place (Blackman, 2018).

Blog post #9: Gender Equality
The definition of cultural diversity has many different aspects and factors. Culture diversity means Diversity within different cultures, and indicates a sense of equality to all cultures. Hospitals, care facilities, and private practices are trying to implement culture diversity in order to ensure everyone of all race, gender, or ethnicity is being treated equal. One most important factor of culture diversity is gender. Gender can be categorized between males and females. There is a big difference between males and females and how they get treated in the healthcare field. Females and males get treated differently. In reality, men probably get paid more doing the same job as a women, that’s just how things are. Or a male nurse maybe treated differently than a female nurse. Differences between males and females would most likely always exist because of the significant differences between them. However in the healthcare field, there is another underlying problem that needs to be addressed. Besides males and females, there are different gender identities such as gays, lesbians, and bisexuals. These gender categorizes face a lot of discrimination however, it is important to know in healthcare, as healthcare providers we need to treat everyone of all different types the same way. “By making a work environment more inclusive a diversity policy needs to mention people that are transgender. These type of gender identities cannot be discriminated upon and won’t be tolerated (Blackman, Andrew, June 2 2018).” For example, if a nurse has beliefs against transgender, she/he cannot, under any circumstances, treat that patient differently than a patient that is heterosexual. Gender equality is a law in the United States to treat all gender/gender identities equal. Gender equality is very important for all healthcare facilities to implement.

Blog post #8: Diversity and Inclusions at New York Brooklyn Maimonides Hospital.
Hospitals are constantly trying to make diversity and inclusion better and better for their working environment. Maimonides hospital which is located in Borough Park Brooklyn New York, is a great hospital that always works hard to make diversity and inclusion. “This hospital wasn’t always like this says Douglas Jablon, the senior vice president of patient relations at Maimonides Medical Center” ( Douglas Jablon). Douglas says when he used to walk around this Brooklyn Hospital, he hears as may as 70 languages. When he arrived 41 years ago, diversity for Maimonides meant having Orthodox Jews and other Jews in the same place, but after many years he realized even though this hospital is located in the center of such a Jewish area, this hospital still accepts anyone and never will turn away someone if your not part of their community. So the purpose and diversity in Maimonides is everyone is welcomed no matter what culture you hold or what language you speak.

Blog Post #8: Diversity and Inclusion at New York-Presbysterian Queens
Hospitals are constantly trying to implement ways of diversity and inclusion in their working environment. Not all may be practicing the concept of diversity but I believe most are rising to it, especially during these times where there are a number of diverse communities. One hospital that does promote diversity, specifically to the LGBTQ community, is New York-Presbyterian in Queens. Their website advocates for offering equal quality care and access of services for the LGBTQ community, they also create specific events that pertain to the LGBTQ community. “The LGBTQ Employee Resource Group works to improve the work experience for LGBTQ employees at NYP Queens. This group is committed to educating colleagues about the LGBTQ experience, both for patients and fellow coworkers. The goal is to create a sense of camaraderie through social and educational networking opportunities.” (LGBTQ Healthcare Services and Programs, n.d). I think its very important to continue implementing diversity in hospitals and advocating for communities like LGBTQ because it welcomes an accepting, understanding, and non discriminatory system which is crucial to maintain in the hospital setting. Educating patients as well as staff members is very important as well because it creates a sense of solidarity and companionship.

Blog post 8  Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC)
All hospitals are implementing certain programs within the hospital to educate healthcare providers about culture diversity and how to improve our understanding of cultural diversity. Hospitals are aware that a patient will feel confident if there culture or religion gets recognized and respected by their healthcare providers. By understanding patients culture can help understand patients better and provider efficient healthcare. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is located in Boston. This hospital has a specific program for all health care providers about diversity, inclusion, and career advancement. This program hosts annual lectures about diversity and inclusion. This program also offers mentoring opportunities to medical students and residents regarding cultural diversity and how to deal with culture diversity. Lastly, this program also organizes networks and social events about culture diversity (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, 2018). This program was designed for providers to accept different aspects and different perspectives of a variety of cultures. The healthcare providers need to make sure every culture is treated with respect and treated equally. Ultimately the goal of this program is to create a culture diverse understanding throughout the workforce in this hospital.

Post #8: Diversity and Inclusion at Mount Sinai
Diversity and inclusion are areas of top priority for health care entities both big and small. Providers are making it a point of duty to educate their staff on the subject of cultural competence. Employees are expected to practice these competencies as they perform their daily tasks. The Mount Sinai Network is no different. They have also received numerous accolades for their efforts towards inclusion and diversity. An article on the organization’s website boasts that, “for the second consecutive year, the Mount Sinai Health System has ranked No.1 on the “Top 12 Hospitals and Health Systems” list of DiversityInc, the nation’s leading publication in advancing diversity management”( Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai,2019). The same article explained that, “among the best practices that led to Mount Sinai’s honor on the 2018 list were advancing the care of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender patients; creating a women’s advocacy employee resource group; and increasing the focus on people with disabilities”(2019). Mount Sinai also has an office dedicated solely to the promotion of and implementing programs to have to do with diversity and inclusion. It is called “The Office for Diversity and Inclusion (ODI)”. The goals of this office is to champion a diverse workforce, strive to create a multicultural environment, and to foster an inclusive setting to ensure delivery of high-level care to the diverse patient populations in New York City and beyond. The efforts by Mount Sinai should be commend and hopefully be an example to others in the same field. All patients despite their background should have the ability to receive medical attention that makes them feel safe and respected.

Blog Post #8- NYU Diversity and Inclusion
NYU is one of New York’s greatest hospitals, so naturally they have a great diversity inclusion system placed within their health care team. They address different cultures and turn it into an opportunity to learn and build respect for one another. The diversity and inclusion initiatives set at NYU allow for ultimate health care outcomes because patients and healthcare providers create a mutual respect for one another. An example of an inclusive initiative set at NYU is the “OUTList”, which provides an outlet and possible networking oppurtunities for those who identify as part of the LBGTQ+ community (NYU, 2019)
