It Began With a Hashtag

Social media has been the platform in which the thoughts, ideas and voices of the many are finally able to be expressed. At the country’s founding, people in power have created a systemic disposition of power based off the color of a persons skin. Generations of people have lived in this world of oppression and for a long time, mainstream media has been able to turn a blind eye. People who wear the mask of protector abuse their power and escape justice. 

Millennials now more than ever seek news and information through social media. When the video of the murder of Rodney King was released, the world changed. Here was the proof in video form for the public to see. Since then activists on social media have taken to recording the mistreatment and brutality that people of color face. After the murder of young and unarmed Treyvon Martin and the acquittal of George Zimmerman the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter was coined. Social media is being utilized as a tool to share information, raise issues in communities and creating sustained movements for social change.

Mocking/Insulting: Harshly making fun of or disparaging the target.Concern trollingPretending to operate out of concern (for civility, the target’s career, etc.). Sea-lioning: Engaging in bad faith “debate” that seeks to discredit the target. Grave-digging: Seeking out old posts by the target and sharing them out of context. Threatening: Suggesting that the harasser intends to harm the target or their associates. Impersonating: Creating fake accounts that post content pretending to be the target. Doxxing: Posting the target’s personal identifying information online. Cyberexploitation: Publicly posting nude or otherwise compromising photos or videos of the target. Identity theft: Beyond impersonation, this involves taking over the target’s passwords, bank accounts, or other resources). Usually involves hacking. Stalking: Harassing the target across multiple platforms (may include email, phone, text, and others) and even offline. Swatting: Calling law enforcement with a false report of a crime, giving the target’s address.
