He most definitely did not find something strange and wonderful a few months ago that he keeps hidden away. Nor does he have any idea that visiting a local “haunted house” with his best friend will change his life on an ordinary Saturday evening in October.

“Crickets,” Blaine whispers to himself, settling deeper into the chair. The night wraps around him like a living thing; he never knew that night itself had substance. His gaze is fixed on the lake, shimmering in the moonlight—it’s one of his favorite things about living here. But it isn’t the sight that occupies his mind—it’s the sound. Everything presses against his ears, vying for his attention, layered with sounds stretching endlessly in every direction. It isn’t chaotic—it’s precise in the way that nature is at the cellular level. But it’s too much—every creak, every rustle, every distant ripple presses against his mind, demanding awareness.

Can’t say that I mind that you’re in your ‘seeing me in a corset’ phase.”

“Awww,” Kurt says, rubbing his back. 

“My heart is full. Reading Madame Moonstone columns and spending so much time with Alex and Tess. And journal time. I need cuddles and sleep. Are you… Can you feed off me? Or…?” Blaine asks cautiously. 

Kurt leans over and kisses his cheek. “Yeah. Just a bit to help you sleep. Who knew you would turn out to be such a venom junkie?”

Blaine laughs and shrugs. “I love how it stings.”

“I know you do,” Kurt says softly. “After what happened last night, I think we need to take it easy for a few days, but I can manage if we aren’t [...]”

“Errm…” Blaine drums his fingers on the glass. “1956!” “Excellent year!" Elliot exclaims. "Elvis Presley released ‘Heartbreak Hotel,’ and Frank Sinatra's tenth album, Songs for Swingin’ Lovers, came out! Noël Coward's musical South Sea Bubble premiered in London. Harry Belafonte's album Calypso went number one. Bobby Fischer won the Rosenwald Tournament, and The Wizard of Oz was televised for the first time!” “Oh my gosh,” Blaine laughs. “Can you do that for any year?” ”Preeeeetty much! I try to know at least a dozen random facts for each year I’ve lived. It’s a nice party trick.”  “That’s a hell of a lot more than a party trick!”

“Blaine,” Kurt gasps, looking around. “Yee-haw, love!” Blaine exclaims, patting his chestnut brown mare. The sun is high, its radiant heat penetrating their backs and glowing in hues of azure and gold over the infinite expanse of the American frontier—it seems like they’ve galloped right into a Western movie. They’re riding side by side, their horses’ hooves kicking up small dust clouds as they traverse the vast plains. Kurt laughs, his mouth still agape, and then grins, “‘Yee-haw’?” “You heard me!”

Moonfall Manor Masquerade: Chapter 17

Blaine’s brain nearly short circuits when they reach the luxurious primary bedroom, the king-sized bed covered in an array of black and cream textured linens and pillows, the white fireplace against a stark ebony wall. The black and white reading chairs, the mercury glass lamps, the chandelier. The ensuite has a gigantic open shower with two copper rain shower heads. But what takes his breath away are the three large canvases hanging on the wall.  “You painted these, didn’t you?” He presses his hand over his heart and rubs circles over it; the meaning—the symbolism is overwhelming. He recognizes their story immediately.

“Let me think about that… Hmmm... you driving in some little car alone or... vampires driving you with reflexes a thousand times faster than humans and can hear everything happening in surrounding traffic [...]?” “Oh, alright,” Blaine huffs and rolls his eyes with a grin. “I didn’t want to assume! How about I try a different approach?” He takes a sip of water and then turns slightly to bat his lashes at Kurt. “My sugar plum blossom angel jellyfish, will you consider it your utmost duty to ensure my every transportation need [...]?”

He traverses back up the stairs impossibly faster than it took him to get down them, slamming the door behind him, and sits up in bed, heaving for air as if he’d run that far. “Kurrrrrrt!”  Not a split second later, Kurt is at his bedside and asks, “What’s wrong?” catching Blaine as he pushes off from the bed, throwing his arms around his neck and wrapping his legs around his waist, burying his face into Kurt’s neck. “We’re salt and pepper shakers!” “What?” Kurt asks, bewildered, his lips smirking, but his brows furrow, matching the emotion of the odd strangling cries and giggles coming out of Blaine all at once.

Moonfall Manor Masquerade: Chapter 14

“Close your eyes,” Blaine says as he leans forward, touching Kurt’s forehead, cradling his jaw, and concentrating. “I think this will work… It’s a dream after all,” he mumbles.  “Blaine—” There’s a whoosh of hot air and a giggle as everything turns black. Kurt feels his consciousness snapped into a new shape—a much smaller shape—and suddenly, his toes have become ten little claws gripped around a tree branch. ”Blaine!” His eyes fly open. "Why are we upside down?” Then he looks over to his right and starts cackling. “You did not!”  “I so did!” He inhales, testing his senses, sharpening to the sounds and scents in the dark. “I’m glad we can still understand each other, even though all I hear is squeaking! Oh my god! You have little bat fang teefies!”
