When you think about it though Piccolo’s harsh treatment of Gohan is understandable even if it’s not appropriate.  And not just because he’s the reincarnation/son of an alien “god’s” split-off evil half, either.  Piccolo survived his childhood in the dangerous wilderness from hatching, and nobody ever coddled him when he was small.  He spent the first three years of his life on a planet where he was one of two of his kind (the other being the god), training hard to fight the guy who took down his father.  And why would he have any knowledge of what constitutes a normal Earth human childhood?

Piccolo’s whole life up to that point had been spent trying to get stronger so he could get revenge, kill Goku, and take over the world.  So why couldn’t Goku’s lame kid suck it up and try to harness his latent huge power to try to save the world?  Piccolo’s inability to understand Gohan’s fear and childishness, when he never had any fear of pain or death or anything else and essentially did not have a childhood, make complete sense.

So his time training Gohan, while his behavior is not okay from a realistic perspective (although hilariously terrible from the perspective that this is a cartoon about superpowered martial arts, right), isn’t random for plot device purposes or just “Piccolo is an evil horrible person,” it’s completely in keeping with his history AND it provides a stellar opportunity for character development that indeed comes to fruition when Gohan becomes the first person Piccolo’s ever really cared about.
