hope you don't mind me sending this ask, but I kinda need help from someone who'd understand. A month ago I ditched my special interest bc the involvement in fandom was getting toxic (people in fandom have treated me like shit). I can't really interact with my special interest outside of fandom, or at least not as much. But I feel genuinely depressed over this, even though my life is going wonderful in all other aspects. Can you or maybe some of your followers help me?

i don’t mind any of these asks! i want to help as much as i can! well i’m not really sure what your special interest is. honestly the way you put this it could be anything but i’m assuming it’s something with a large fandom? if it’s a tv show or story or anything like that, are you still able to watch/read it without directly interacting with other members of the fandom? do you have any close or trusted friends who also are a part of this fandom who can enjoy it with you/kinda keep you safe while being in the fandom? i think that you shouldn’t abandon something that makes you happy, especially if it makes you depressed and impedes on your life. your happiness is important but i understand the fandom might have also made you unhappy. maybe you should stay relatively quiet in the fandom? or is it possible to not really partake in the fandom at all and to just enjoy the special interest alone, on your own time? take my special interest for example- it’s the warrior cats! i love it so much, and i really enjoy being a part of the fandom but mainly i’ll just read the books and watch pmvs. i don’t interact with the other fans very much or run like a warriors blog, but i like to design characters and stuff for my own warriors universe! maybe it could be something simple like that! just enjoying it kind of aside from the fandom. and if you absolutely can’t do that, maybe make a new identity in the fandom? or create a different presence- maybe not interact with the people who were toxic, and find better groups of people. focus on the positives. or try to keep a low profile maybe!! i want you to be able to enjoy your special interest but i’m not sure what else to say;; i really hope that even any of this helps. please keep me updated on the situation!

the idea that autism stops people from doing incredible things is damaging. the idea that autistic people have to redeem themselves with a special talent or skill is really, REALLY damaging.
