Why Killian Jones is the truest Captain Hook

Here’s what Barrie himself wrote in “Peter and Wendy” describing Hook. 

His black hair gave a singularly threatening expression to his handsome countenance. His eyes were of the blue of the forget-me-not, and of a profound melancholy

save when he was plunging his hook into you, at which time two red spots appeared in them and lit them up horribly.

Ever a dark and solitary enigma, he stood aloof from his followers in spirit as in substance.

It was Peter’s cockiness. This had got on Hook’s nerves.

The idyllic nature of the scene stirred him profoundly.

“This is a stunning view of the sea, there’s no sight like a full moon on the waves…” (OUAT 5x08)

But above all he retained a passion for Good Form. However much he may have degenerated, he still knew that in the end this is all that really matters.

He had a playful humour at moments.

A different treatment was accorded to Wendy, who came last. With ironical politeness, Hook raised his hat to her, and, offering her his arm, escorted her to the spot where the others were being gagged. He did it with such an air, he was so frightfully distingué, that she was too fascinated to cry out. Perhaps it is tell-tale to divulge that for a moment Hook entranced. 

Conclusion: Colin and the writers are amazing. They put a great spin on an iconic character remaining true to Barrie’s original version. Another of the many reasons to love Killian Jones.

Dark Swan isn’t Emma’s ARC. She does’t have arcs - she has the whole SHOW.

I’ve seen a number of posts lately saying that CS has ruined what was supposed to be Emma’s arc.  This is misguided for one HUGE reason - Emma doesn’t have “arcs” - she has the show.

“Once Upon a Time” is Emma’s Fairytale - this is according to the show’s creators.  As such, every single season focuses on her.

Yes, it’s an ensemble cast. Yes, there is a core cast with “main characters” but ultimately Emma is the Leading Lady. She is the most central character - and the one that unites the rest.

Each season she has a theme for Emma:

S1 - motherhood and heroism (Henry and the Curse)

S2  - fairytale life and accepting her heritage (Snowing and the EF)

S3 - home and identity (Storybrooke and being the Savior not a Lost Girl)

S4 - friendship (Regina - and Magic)

S5 - romantic love (Hook  - and fighting for her own Happy Ending)

Dark Swan isn’t Emma’s annual arc -  it’s Emma’s romantic arc - for the series.  Because every season is hers. Other characters may take turns getting seasonal arcs where they get lots of focus.  Emma doesn’t - every season, every half season, has her at it’s center. So it’s wrong minded to get angry that her “arc” is being ruined by CS - because this is just ONE chapter in her story, and there’s nothing wrong with dedicating a half season or more to the Love Story of the leading lady.

People that are complaining now weren’t complaining that Regina ruined Emma’s “arc” in 4B. That season was promoted as being ALL ABOUT Emma’s fight against the darkness. We didn’t see much of Hook and hardly anything at all with Emma and her parents (and definitely little that was postive. Swan believer was almost completely neglected. Rumbelle - I’m not even going to go there.  But we did see a significant amount of screen time for Regina and and a great deal of focus was put on her relationship with Emma. So much so that fans of hers labeled the season as “Regina’s ARC” even though it was NOT promoted as such in any way - the advertising prior to the season’s start was all about EMMA.

And now we’ve got a season in which Emma’s battle against the darkness involves another significant person in her life - Hook.  And despite the fact that the MAIN CAST has had much more focus than they did in 4B - people are complaining that it’s the CS show or the Hook show.  So far this season we’ve gotten:

Snowing Centric

Charming Centric

Swan Mills Family Centric

A ton of screen time for Emma, as usual

It’s WAY more focus on the core cast than we had in 4B, and Hook and Regina have nearly identical screen time to date. But because we had ONE CS centric so far and because Emma’s motivation in this arc is her romantic love somehow the show is “ruined”.  This is complete bullshit and TOTAL HYPOCRISY.

People have gotten the idea that this show has two leads - it doesn’t. It has an ensemble cast and ONE central character. When it comes to billing there are several names at the top of the cast - but if you want to know who is the actual leading lady just take a look at which actress the creators take to NYCC each year. It’s Jennifer Morrison- because this is EMMA’S STORY.

She’s not even my favorite character on this show. But even I can see she is at the show’s core. So if you are angry because that other characters aren’t getting enough screen time don’t blame it on the fact that Emma Swan has has a romantic interest, don’t blame it on the fact that she - just like EVERY OTHER CHARACTER ON THIS SHOW - is motivated by love; don’t blame it on CS just because you don’t like Hook. Blame it on the fact that the writers have given us multiple episodes on Camelot’s characters and an entire HOUR on Dunbroch without the main cast.

People need to accept that this show revolves around Emma.  Whether or not you like Hook, and whether or not he was here in S1 doesn’t matter - he’s important to Emma NOW and this story has been building for 4 or the 5 seasons this show has existed. Colin has been a regular since he first appeared in S2 - there’s NO reason he should not get screen time and an arc in which he plays a bigger role; there is NO reason he should not play a large part in Emma’s fight against the darkness. I get that people expected something different from the Dark Swan arc, I understand there are important story lines that are on hold during this “Save Emma” plot, but saying that the creators focusing on Emma’s love life is ruining the show - that’s absurd. Romance has been a key component since the very first season.

Charming was originally planned to die in the pilot. Skin Deep was supposed to be a one off episode with Belle. Yet nobody complains that changing things to allow a place for these romances ruined the show. Nobody complains that Snow and Rumple’s stories have largely been written as romantic in nature. People have embraced this. So if you have a problem with this season you have to ask yourself - is it because you don’t think a main character should have an arc that is motivated by love…or do you just not want her in love with Hook?

Emma isn’t here to prop up the Snowing/Regina/Rumple storylines - they are here as part of HER story. She isn’t a plot device for their tales. And she doesn’t need every action or story line of hers to revolve around her parents, her son, or her friend. She deserves a Love Story. Please don’t begrudge her character the same thing that you are happy to see all the other characters receive. Please don’t say her focusing on finding True Love and fighting for her own Happy Ending is ruining the show.

STOP ANON HATE IN THE OUAT COMMUNITY

Today I received a piece of anon hate. I know what you’re thinking: “that sucks, but everyone gets it. Just send it to OUATreceipts & move on.” And yes, normally I’d agree. But in this particular piece of anon hate CSers (including myself) were all referred to as “rapist apologists.”   

Therein lies the problem. I’m actually a rape victim. When I was 18 years old, on prom night I was raped. Then to make matters worse, I was called a slut by practically my entire high school class because a football player couldn’t possibly be a rapist. I had to be lying.  And given I’m bisexual, that just added fuel to the fire because don’t you know? All bisexual women are huge whores. This all culminated in me having a nervous breakdown my freshmen year of college. Needless to say, it was not a happy time in my life. 

Why am I telling you this? Not to make you feel bad for me. But for you to realize that words have meaning. There are real people behind these tumblr accounts and when you send anon hate those words have an impact on the people you send them to. Being called a “rapist apologist” is triggering to me. And not triggering in the tumblr buzzword-y way. But genuinely triggering, as in flashbacks, panic attacks, and a visit to the therapist. 

After responding to the anon hate, I took some time to more thoroughly look at both OUATreceipts and sqreceipts and what I saw there truly disgusted me. It is never okay to send hatred to anyone. Anonymously or otherwise. And it needs to STOP. You have no clue what someone’s history is or what they currently have going on in their life. Words have power and can do irreparable harm. Calling someone delusional, a dyke, or a rapist apologist is not okay. 

So next time, before you’re tempted to press that anon button, think for a second. Would you want someone saying those words to your mother? Your best friend? Your sibling? How would you feel if they were said to you? And do you want to be held accountable for any damage they might cause? Do you want that on your conscience? We are not robots behind these URLs. We’re real, actual people.
