Large, mysteriousĀ ā€œjelly blobsā€ have popped up on the coast of Norway. They range about three feet in diameter, and scientists arenā€™t quite sure what they are yet. The main hypothesis is an egg mass that hasnā€™t been identified before, specifically that of a squid, as the dark streak running through them could be squid ink.Ā

people seem to have trouble understanding why iā€™m an anti-capitalist, so iā€™m going to try and put it into simple, real-life terms.
i work at a restaurant. i make $12 an hour, plus tips. minimum wage where i live is relatively high for my country - the national minimum wage is $7.25/hr, and has not been raised since 2009. before taxes, working full time, my yearly income is about $22,000 a year. ($25,000 if you count tips)
at my job, we sell various dishes, with an average price of about $10-$15. we get printouts every week detailing how much money we made that week; in one week, our restaurant makes about $30,000. (one of our other locations actually makes this much on a daily basis!)
iā€™m not going to go into details, but after the costs of production (payroll for employees, rent for the building, maintenance, and wholesale food purchasing) are accounted for, the restaurant makes an estimated profit of $20,000 per week.
this profit goes directly to the owner, who does not work at this location. the owner of my restaurant has actually been on vacation for a few months, but still profits from the restaurant, because they own it. i have met the owner exactly twice in my year of working here.
to put this into perspective, the owner of this restaurant earns in 2 days what they pay me in one year. and thatā€™s just from this single location - the owner has several other restaurants, all of which make more money than the one i work at. this ends up resulting in the owner having an estimated net worth of tens of millions of dollars, even after accounting for the payroll for every single worker in their employ.
now, i have to ask you: does the owner of my restaurant deserve this income? did they earn it? did their labor result in this value being created?
the naive answer would beĀ ā€œyesā€; the owner purchased the location and arranged for the raw ingredients to be delivered, did they not?
the actual answer isĀ ā€œnoā€. the owner may have used their initial capital to start the location, but the profit is a result of my labor, and the labor of my co-workers.
the owner purchases rice at a very low bulk price of about 25 cents a pound. i cook the rice, and within a few minutes, that pound of rice is suddenly worth about $30. the owner did not create this value, i did. the owner simply provided the initial capital investment required to start the process.
what needs to be understood here is that capitalists do not create value. they use the labor of their employees to create value, and then take the excess profit and keep it.
what needs to be understood is that capitalists accrue income by already HAVING money. the owner of my restaurant was only able to get this far because they started off, from the very beginning, with enough money to purchase a building, purchase food in bulk, and hire hundreds of employees.
that is to say: the rich get richer, and they do so by exploiting the labor of the poor.
the owner of my restaurant could afford to triple the income of every single person in their employee if they felt like it, but this would mean that they were generating less profit for themselves, so they do not.
the owner of my restaurant pays me the current minimum wage of my area, because to them, i am not a person. i am an investment. i am an asset. i am a means to create more money.Ā
when you are paid minimum wage, the message your boss is sending you is this:Ā ā€œlegally, if i could pay you less, i would.ā€
every capitalist on the planet exploits their workers for their own gain. every capitalist, even the small business owners, forces people to stay in poverty so that the capitalist can profit.

White people are more likely to get hired because their names sounds white.
White kids are punished less for the same behavior than black kids
White convicts are more likely to get a job than black people without records.
A white person with no college degree is just as like to get hired as a black person with a college degree
All white juries (itā€™s starts on page 11) are Ā more likely to convict black criminals than white ones.
Black people are more likely to be stopped and frisked than white people even though they have a higher drug usage than us.
White people (majority of doctors) think that black people feel less pain
Black people get longer sentences than white people
White people use the majority of drugs but black people go to jail longer. This talks more about why our jails and prison are full of black and poor people
White people push for harsher laws when they think it will affect black people
Black people are more likely to get death penalty if their victim is white vs white people if their victims is Black. (Really it applies to all races. Any race that isnā€™t Black is less likely to get the death penalty if their victim is Black.)
Since this is much longer than the others if you scroll down to figure 5 and read the information about it thatā€™s where this is detailed but the whole thing is a good read.
Reblogging this to here because I can never find examples of white privilege and systematic oppression when I go searching for it in our blog or my personal one.

Associating the entire religion of Islam with terrorism or oppression is narrow-minded and wrong. For centuries, Muslims around the world have been responsible for scientific discoveries, works of art, and major technological advancements. There is a great deal of diversity in the way Islam is practiced by the 1.6 billion Muslims around the world, it is a vastly complex and diverse religion.Ā Read more

This is what the ā€œMuslim Banā€ is helping to distract us fromā€¦ ā€œWhat is unfolding inside Washington right now is, for all intents and purposes, a step-by-step coup e'tat against constitutional government. Steve Bannon has played, and will continue to play, the leading role in this usurpation ā€“ his positions effectively shield him from any government oversight or accountability. That Bannon has largely succeeded in shielding from public view his neo-Nazi associations and contempt for the American constitution should be cause for still greater alarm. What much we do know is gravely worrisome in itself. This post concerns Donald Trumpā€™s elevation of Bannon to leading roles within the National Security Council. To review: the National Security Council (NSC) comprises important high-level government officials including the President, Vice President, Secretary of State, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Director of National Intelligence. Its main job is to use this broad expertise to advise the President on national security matters and assist in carrying out security directives. Yesterday, the President removed the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Director of National Intelligence from the NSC. He replaced them with Steve Bannon. Bannon has no government, intelligence, or high-level military experience; his experience is leading a propaganda outlet (Breitbart News) that peddles nationalist and white nationalist viewpoints. This would be deeply concerning in and of itself. But one of the jobs of the NSC is to oversee a secret panel that authorizes the assassination of ā€œenemies of the United States Governmentā€ ā€“ including American citizens. These targeted killings are fully authorized by law under the Congressional military authorization act following 9/11. There is no trial, no due process, and no public record of the decision or the assassination itself. Just to recap the absurdity: the President of the United States has appointed a known propagandist, nationalist, and white supremacist to replace the highest military adviser in the country on a council that authorizes secret, legal, targeted killings of American citizens (and others) without due process. What You Can Do: - Call your Senators and Congressperson this week and demand that they publicly and legislatively oppose Trumpā€™s appointment of Steven Bannon to the NSC. - Spread the word about this news to your networks, since this is not getting a lot of coverage right now.ā€

Are birds manā€™s best friend?
They say dog is manā€™s best friend, but would you believe a bird could assume the title of ā€˜loyal companionā€™?Ā
A certain type of bird is earning the title in and amongst parts of Africa. A wax-eating bird called the greater honeyguide works together with people to find wild beesā€™ nest. This relationship is vital between human and bird because it provides a valuable resource to both. Itā€™s also the first time this kind of ā€˜human-birdā€™ relationship has been described. During the honey hunting season, Honeyguides give a special call to attract peopleā€™s attention, then fly from tree to tree to indicate the direction of a beesā€™ nest. Local honey hunters follow the birds, subdue the stinging bees with smoke and chop open their nest. The end result provides wax to both the honeyguide and humans.
