“Elton John and Freddie had fallen out with each other years ago, but by Live Aid they were back on good speaking terms. He was fairly rotund then, but on a strict diet. He didn’t have any meat, just vegetables. Nor would he drink anything but water. When we started eating I soon discovered what Joe had meant. Elton liked his seasoning and he shook the salt so vigorously over his plate that he saved me the trouble of putting it on mine.”
