♡ # 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐅𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝆥 FT . KINICH X GN! READER | 𝐒𝐅𝐖
⸻ Confessing to the saurian hunter
⸻ Possible follow up / second part if this does ok
On the outside Kinich has always seemed distant, like he's got a secret tucked behind his teeth, but to you he's always been a beacon of stability. You've watched him from the corner of your eye, his strong hands moving swiftly with his claymore at enemies, his sharp eyes scanning the horizon for any signs of danger. He someone you can rely on and that's why you're so fond of him - even with Ajaw's constant blabbering it's hard to stay away for too long.
Kinich finds you. . .tolerable, is what you like to think. You know he's not one for deep, meaningful conversations, but you've seen the way he looks at you when he thinks no one else is watching. Like you're the only person in the room. Like you're the only person in the world. It's a look that makes your heart flutter in your chest, but you're not quite sure if it's love or just the fear of rejection. You've been friends with him and Ajaw for months now, and the three of you have become a makeshift family of sorts. You don't want to spoil that. But you can't help but wonder what can be.
So when you stumble upon Kinich sitting alone by the campfire, you decide it's time to be bold. Your heart races as you approach, the crackling of the fire seemingly growing louder with every step. He glances up, his eyes meeting yours, and for a brief moment you consider retreating. But something in his gaze holds you firm. He's not scowling or dismissive, just...curious. "What's up? Can't sleep?" he asks, his deep voice rumbling like distant thunder.
You swallow hard, trying to ignore the butterflies in your stomach. "I just wanted to talk," you reply, your voice a little shakier than you'd like. You sit down across from him, the fire casting flickering shadows across his chiseled features. Kinich nods slowly, his gaze never leaving yours. "Okay," he says, his tone open and non-threatening. He's giving you the floor, and now you're not sure what to do with it.
You take a deep breath, letting the smell of the woodsmoke fill your lungs and hoping it'll give you courage (it doesn't) before you finally start speaking. "Do you like anyone?" He raises an eyebrow, the firelight playing over his features. "Like anyone?" He echoes your question, his voice a low murmur. "What do you mean?"
"Like, uh. Romantically," you clarify, your cheeks flushing in the firelight. You feel like a schoolgirl with a crush, but you force yourself to maintain eye contact. Kinich seems to ponder your question for a moment before shaking his head. "Not really," he admits, his eyes searching the flames as if they hold the secrets of his heart. "I haven't considered it much, to be honest."
The silence that follows feels heavier than the sword at his side. You wonder if you should say something more, but your mouth is suddenly dry. "Why ask?" he says finally, breaking the tension. "Is there someone you're interested in?"
You take another deep breath, the scent of burning wood now mixed with a hint of something else - hope. "Well, I..." You pause, trying to find the right words. Kinich narrowed his eyes slightly, perhaps he's jealous? Or annoyed. You couldn't tell, but his gaze remained on you, unwavering. "I've been thinking about..you." You blurt out, your voice barely above a whisper.
Kinich's eyes widened, and for a brief moment, you could've sworn you saw a flicker of surprise in them. But it was gone as quickly as it had come. "Me?" he asked, his voice just as quiet as yours. You nodded, feeling your heart pound against your ribcage. "Yes, you. I know it's weird and probably unwelcome, but I had to tell you."
"I never said I wasn't welcome to it," Kinich replied, his voice a soft rumble in the quiet of the night. His gaze remained steadfast on the fire, the flickering shadows playing over his face like a silent film. You studied him, trying to read his emotions from his stoic expression, but it was as if he had donned an invisible mask.
"It's okay if you don't feel the same," you say quickly, trying to fill the silence. But you can't help the hope that blooms in your chest when he doesn't immediately reject you. Kinich's hand moves to his neck, rubbing it thoughtfully. It's a gesture you've seen a hundred times, but now it seems loaded with meaning. Is he nervous? Does he feel the same?
"I thought you disliked me," he murmurs, so low that you almost miss it.You blink in surprise. "What? No, I never said that! Why would you think that?" Kinich shrugs, his eyes still on the flames. "You're so...out of my league." His words hang in the air, a confession wrapped in vulnerability. You lean in, your hand reaching out to touch his arm. His muscles tense beneath your fingertips, but he doesn't pull away.
"I don't think about it like that," you say softly. "You're my friend, and you're important to me." He looks up, finally meeting your gaze. The firelight dances in his eyes, making them seem to glow with an inner warmth. "Friends?" he repeats, as if the word has changed meaning in the quiet night. You nod, smiling gently. "Yeah, friends."
"I thought we liked each other more then that," Kinich says after a beat, his voice thick with something unspoken. You feel the weight of his words, the unspoken admission hanging between you like a drawn blade. "We do? I mean - you like me too? As more than a friend?"
He looks away again, focusing on the dance of the flames. "I wouldn't be sitting here if I didn't," he says, his tone gruff. You can't help the smile that tugs at your lips, but you fight to keep it in check. This isn't the time for giddiness. "But I figured you had your eyes on someone else," he adds, his voice barely audible.
"No," you reply, your voice earnest. "It's always been you." The silence that follows feels charged, like the air before a storm. The fire crackles, and you can almost hear the beating of your hearts in sync with the rhythm of the flames.
