1. Religious expansionism: The Spaniards of the Age of Discovery wanted so badly to have an impact at the world stage, while careful not offend their God by attributing all their imperial ambitions to His Grace and Will. The Philippines is not just an ideal trading post but also an ideal jumping board for Catholicism to reach its tentacles, while slowly grasping (and eventually suffocating) the Asian continent. But were they successful? No. Barely no. (Hahahaha)

2. Economic prospects: Portugal successfully founded and conquered trading ports in Asia (Melaka, Macau, Goa, Daman, Diu, Sri Lanka, Nagasaki, etc.). Spain, as always the older brother jealous of the younger brother’s achievements, wanted his piece of Asian cake too.

3. Geographic location: The Philippines’ location proved to be an ideal trading post for goods coming from China (silk) and Indonesian archipelago (spices), while far enough from potential successful invasion from other powers. Although there were attempts (Portuguese/Dutch/British/Chinese invasions) but these were successfully repelled after months or a couple of years. Lastly, it borders the vast Pacific Ocean to its east, allowing for an undisturbed trade with the Spanish Americans (particularly Mexico).
