In light of Canada day, I think it’s about time that I dedicated a full character analysis to him. What I aim to do is disprove any claims that Himaruya has made Canada into a flat, two-dimensional character. It’s quite the contrary.

Canada’s well-known for his invisibility and the overused jokes that accompany this characterization. However, to say that this is all that defines Canada is to overlook the amazing depth that this invisibility has on his personality.

While it’s easy to look at Canada as the nation that’s ignored during meetings, what this post will explore is the ways in which Canada’s character is far more fleshed out than what is popularly conceived in fanon.

Childhood:  

From birth, Canada was objectified by European colonizers for his abundance of resources [x].

After England fights France to assume control over Canada, Canada mistakenly assumes that England is the first nation to actually look at him as a person and not merely as an asset.

Some Tips on How to Describe Bodies

Bodies can be really hard to get right. Humans have got to be one of the most complicated things to describe, since we come in such a variety! Unless you’re an identical twin, no one person looks exactly the same. 

Describing bodies has a lot to do with timing and putting the important things first, while spreading out the rest over the course of your story to piece together more and more of your character like a jigsaw puzzle. Though this can seem like a daunting task, I’ve provided you with a list of tips and tricks that can help you out!

1. Don’t dump all your information in one go

Info-dumping about how your character looks the moment they walk through the door isn’t going to go over well for the rhythm and the pacing of your story, and will completely interrupt the flow.

Think about what you FIRST see when you meet someone. 

Your attention is drawn to their face, their body, their clothes, or any distinguishing characteristics— it isn’t automatically drawn to a small birth mark on their neck that looks like a skull. Even though it’s super cool and might be a very important aspect of your character, it’s a small detail, and noticing things like that usually comes later during conversation, when you’re sizing people up and trying to get a read on their personality.

When you get a glimpse of a painting at a museum, the first thing you is the picture it’s making, and only when you get closer and start to analyze it, you begin to see all the individual brush strokes. That’s what a first impression is like.

Things You Can Describe During a First Impression:

Hair color/hair style

Age

Skin color

Height

Body type (Willowy, stout, muscular, scrawny, round, etc.)

Clothing (You can find my post on how to describe clothing here)

Assistive devices they may have if they’re disabled

Any distinguishable characteristics (scars, acne, tattoos, horns, wings, etc.)

(Note: Eye color is NOT on this list for a reason! Think about your friends and family. Do you even know what color eyes they have? Eye color is should only be described if it’s distinct, like red or completely demonic black or glowing, etc.)

2. Weave It Into Your Narrative

I didn’t want to say “show don’t tell” because I hate saying that on every single post I make........but yeah, it’s basically show don’t tell.

Using association to describe your character will work a lot more effectively after the first impression than a huge paragraph shoving details in your reader’s face, and it’ll also help you reveal certain aspects of your character’s personality on top of that!

Some examples you can use for association:

Your character’s hair sheds a lot. People find [color/texture] hair all over the place.

Your character runs their fingers through/plays with/twirls their [color/texture] hair.

Your character gets sick/injured and their [color/texture] hair is falling out.

Your POC character is wearing Black hairstyles, such as cornrows, locs, twists, etc.

Your POC character is the Vice President of the [Race] Student Union at school.

Your POC character has several aspects from their culture that affects their daily lives. 

Your POC character experiences a microaggression.

Your white character can “go pale” or “white as a sheet” when they’re surprised or scared. 

Sweat can glisten on your character’s [color] skin. 

Get creative! There are more ways to inadvertently describe how people look than you think!

3. Educate Yourself

Make sure the words you use to describe someone’s body isn’t going to make anyone upset or offended! Hurtful language can be very off-putting, especially for communities that don’t get much representation in books. 

Try your best to avoid stereotyping, and if you’re worried about it, don’t hesitate to ask someone! Tumblr has a very vibrant user population, and I know many blogs that would be happy to help!

For reference, here are some pitfalls that you should make sure you don’t fall into when describing bodies

1. Comparing the skin tones of POC to food (i.e. mocha, chocolate, coffee, etc.) 

This makes many POC very uncomfortable and is rooted in the constant hypersexualization of POC in books. Don’t shy away from the word brown! It’s a widely accepted descriptor, and definitely more widely accepted than food comparisons. However, brown can be vague (since a color can come in all different shades), so make sure you specify! Don’t be wishy-washy.

2. Describing Black hair textures as “kinky,” “wild,” “unkempt,” “wooly,” or “nappy”

These descriptors automatically put a negative connotation on the appearance of natural Black hair, so steer clear! 

3. Reverting to white as default

This is when you describe all of the skin tones of your POC characters but don’t describe the skin tones of your white characters. In doing this, you’re making white the default, and that your readers should automatically assume a character is white unless it’s stated otherwise.

4. Describing a character as ugly or unattractive just because they don’t meet unrealistic body type expectations

This is a big no-no! Imagine you’re reading a book and the author insults someone who looks just like you, claiming that because of how much they weigh/how their face or nose is shaped/ how they have a disability that they’re ugly! Imagine how much that would hurt your self-esteem. Be nice!!!

5. Describing boobs an unnecessary amount

I’m looking at you, men. Sure, if your character is wearing a very low-cut shirt and wants people to see their boobs, then fine. If your narrator is flirty and hyper-sexual, than maybe I’ll let it slide. If they’re meeting under promiscuous circumstances, then okay. 

But if your character is just meeting a woman under normal circumstances, don’t describe her boobs! Don’t spend more than just a quick sentence and go on and on for paragraphs talking about their shape and size and UGH. Stop sexualizing women’s bodies please, and stop sexualizing girls and minors, too, or I’ll steal your kneecaps. 

6. Do your research before writing characters from a group that you’re not a part of!

He’s very strict. He expects you to be his perfect subject, the perfect object of his interests and desires

If he’s drawn to your sweetness, saying harsh words will unnerve him; if he loves your intelligence, then trying to escape his secluded home with all its security measures will frustrate him; etc

He expects you to love him, too; maybe not right away, but in time

If you stray from that fantasy, he will “help you” along by molding you with strict expectations and rules

From the way you dress to the way you eat to the way you behave when he’s in a room with you–gradually, through punishment and patience on his end, you will learn what he expects from you

Once you “behave,” he treats you as well as possible

Good food and pretty clothes and even a TV, if you want to catch up on shows

Just don’t act out or he’ll have to remind you of the rules

How Does He Punish His Darling?

His punishments are logical and clinical.

Disobedience earns you a spanking or caning, depending on the severity

Trying to run away means you’ll be chained in a room until he decides to let you loose

If you try to hurt him or hurt yourself, your arms will be bound so he doesn’t have to worry about it.

Eventually, you will know exactly what to expect when you act out–which means he has no problem meting out punishments

You know what happens when you don’t behave, so why should he feel bad that you’re crying or you wince when you sit down?

Not overtly, for the most part

He’s not going to spot you on the street one day then jab you with a sedative in the middle of the night and whisk you away or anything like that 

But he will worm his way into your life

As a boyfriend, preferably, but he can make do as a friend

From there it’s a matter of getting you to move in with him; once you move in with him, he’ll be able to keep you closer and closer and closer

If you hint or bluntly state that you want to break up or move out, he’ll panic

His panic will make him think of ways to keep you close, which can range from subtle and manipulative (crying until you feel pity and agree to work things out) to more “Lifetime thriller movie” (which, in his case, would be arranging for a special weekend at a secluded cabin as close to the middle of nowhere as possible… then oops, a series of mishaps means you’ll have to stay until help arrives.)

Spoiler: Help won’t arrive and by the time you realize he’s done all of this deliberately so you can’t leave him, it’s too late

How Does He Treat His Darling?

He’s very sweet, as long as you’re acting “right”

He wants to spoil you and give you toys and trinkets

And snuggle–snuggling on the couch with hot chocolate and a cheesy movie or a curated playlist humming in the background

If you haven’t escalated to the “oh shit we’re at a secluded cabin and his smile is looking a tad deranged” phase of your relationship, then he’ll do what he can to help you with your day to day life. Paying off debt, helping you study for a degree, going clothes shopping. 

It can all get overwhelming: he’s very clingy and protective and eventually, that protection turns into control (Where were you? Why were you walking at x part of town? etc)

Once you’re kidnapped, his protective nature ramps up and his sweetness will manifest in very overbearing ways

The few times he heads off into town, leaving you handcuffed to the bed just in case, are a respite from his presence 

How Does He Punish His Darling?

He doesn’t want to punish you, really

You’re perfect for him and perfect darlings like you shouldn’t have to be punished

But if you’ve driven him to it, he’ll do what needs to be done

Chaining you up in the shed until you’re shivering and desperate for warmth

If you do something exceptionally stupid, like run out of the cabin into the cold and snow and dangers, then he’s going to have to take action when you get back

And by action, I mean he’s going to break your leg.

It’ll keep you subdued and safe for a while, as he tries to remind you that he just wants to love you and care for you forever and ever.

Be careful not to drive him over the edge–he’s sweet and smiley on the outside, but he’s strong as held and deep, deep down, he can be ice cold

Can you give pointers on how to write smut properly?

The Ultimate Guide to Writing Smut Fic is a great resource! I’ll try giving some of my own, too, tho!

#1 Tip: The key to writing smut is be yourself & have fun!

OK, that’s a joke, but it’s true. Write smut that you enjoy. If you are turned on by what you’re writing, it’s good. Smut is tricky because everyone has different preferences. 

For example, some people will hate Dom/sub, while others go out of their way looking for it. Stuff like dubcon, noncon, omorashi, etc. will be more divisive, but even vanilla blowjobs will turn some readers off. So just accept that you can’t please everyone and write for yourself! 

Word Choice

Do you call a penis: a cock? shaft? manhood? member? What about lady parts? Some readers will click that back button the minute they see “pussy,” while others won’t read smut that uses any other term. 

Some word choices are safer than others. Generally speaking, no one enjoys clinical terms like “penis” or “vagina.” And no one objects to “him” or “her” (i.e. “He entered her”). 

If in doubt, the vaguer you are, the less likely it is to turn someone off. I am fond of overusing “warmth” and “heat” for everything (i.e. “He entered her warm depths”). Plus, what is a “heat” anyway? When I write gender-neutral smut, the POV character is always getting their heat or sex stroked, and their entrance penetrated. Vague terms are quite useful! 

Here’s a little “smut thesaurus” I made of terms I use or at least don’t find objectionable. Again, you never know what someone might find cringey, and some of them I consider borderline, but there’s nothing on the list that’s universally seen as bad. Like “orbs” for eyes. 

Filthiness level

Not all porn is as porny as other porn! Take for example, the same blowjob:

She took him in her mouth, bobbing up and down in his lap. 

Or... 

Her lips parted around his thick, veiny cock, tasting the salt of his precum on her tongue. Sliding down his shaft until her nose was buried in his dark hairs and his crown struck the back of her throat, she... etc!! 

If you’re not sure how to start, it’s OK to do lighter smut that doesn’t get quite so explicit! A lot of people prefer smut that’s more focused on the emotions and less on the graphic details. I definitely started out writing cleaner smut.  

Your word choices will also affect the filthiness/tone of a fic. Not everyone wants cocks and cunts everywhere! I’d recommend saving your naughtiest words for your naughtiest, most graphic fics, and fluffier language for fluffier, cleaner fics. 

Inspiration!

If you can’t just churn out sexy scenarios on demand...

Read other smutfics/romance novels. I have a whole “smut thesaurus” google doc that I add to every time I see some phrasing that I like. Do not plagiarize entire sentences word for word. But when I see my favorite author use “laving” I’m like... yes. That is a good word for licking. Let me add that to my list of licking words. 

Fantasize. Not to get TMI but if you’re stuck on a smut scene... you know. Consider getting the ol’ vibrator out. Or have sex with someone if that’s an option. Cuddle a pillow. Stop stressing over the keyboard and just imagine what would feel good. THEN WRITE IT DOWN SUPER QUICK BEFORE YOU FORGET. I’m always taking notes on my phone. 

Porn. Just. Straight-up watch some porn. You’re still responsible for the emotional component, but you’re allowed to steal all of the physical acts from a porn video if you want. 

Don’t forget the emotions!!! 

Character development and a strong emotional basis are what separates smut fic from porn. The physical act of two people mashing their body parts together in different configurations loses its interest after awhile. For me anyway. I need a STORY! 

Why are they having sex? How do they feel about the sex they’re having? Tell me how the sex is an expression of how much they care about each other! Or show me how their sexual connection is what makes them start to fall in love! Show me they’re afraid they’re not good enough, but the way their lover moans their name fills them with such a warm, trembling feeling! Tell me how reassured they are when their partner holds their hand! Or how safe they feel with their solid weight pressing them down into the mattress. Or how wild and arousing it is to be with such a fiendish villain! How powerful it feels to have an arrogant, wealthy man begging for you on his knees! How all your insecurity slips away when you give up all control to a trusted partner. How amazing it feels to be that partner, and be trusted. Slow, comforting “you had a bad day and I’m taking care of you” sex where they comb their fingers through your hair. Awkward first times! 

There are so many different feelings to be explored with sex! 

(Ex. Trope-and-Tales devastated me with a smut scene where the arrogant jerk guy desperately wanted affection and kept trying to have sensual, loving sex, but she was angry at him and wanted rough hate-sex, and it was disappointing for both of them and heartbreaking. I’m still not over it. I’ll never be over it. So, you know. Kudos to what you can convey with sex.)

So really, if you put the emotions front and center, you can’t go wrong. Smut is like any other part of writing... just with more body parts mashing together.

He’s sharp, blunt, and even a little mean, but makes it a point to live a carefree life. He does whatever he wants with no regard for others. Everything comes naturally for him, and he doesn’t falter. Or does he?

Appearance

You’d have to kill him before he gets a bowl cut. He had one as a kid and has not looked back since. Instead, he likes his hair on the longer end so he can tie it in a bun or short ponytail. If not, he might rock a shaved updo tied at the top.

Kuro is on the shorter end—whatever 5’6” may be to you. He also goes out quite often, either to play at the batting cages or enjoy night life. For real baseball games, he has to run a lot under the sun, so he has an athletic build and a slight tan. Swimming is also something he enjoys, and in the hotter months when he frequents the beach, he picks up a crazy tan from his trunks.

He has a good sense of fashion. He might not go all out like a lot of young folks do, but he does dress smart. Some of his go-to’s are loose blouses, harem pants, and shirts with kimono sleeves cut at the elbow. Any longer and he’ll tell you it’s too much.
