the beauty of the world is that there are people out there having basically indistiguishable gender and sexuality experiences and one has several microlabels and an army of pride flags, one says "idk i guess im nonbinary or something" and the other is comfortably cis with a little flexibility. and all of them are correct because your identity is whatever you make of it.

Fander Fic Rec Friday (#48)
(Christmas in July...in August)
The Giftening by CrystalHavoc Canonverse (Moceit, Intrulogical) Rating: T Sequel to Remus's Brilliant Plan. Another year another Secret Santa. Only this year Patton has Janus, and this year they're together. It needs to be perfect, so obviously he needs Remus's help. (Meanwhile Remus still has to make good on a deal he made with Patton...) Notes: Read the original, then read this. They're both a lot of fun, I promise. (Look, I've had this one in my rec list spreadsheet for way too long because I never had a list theme come up that I could stick it into, so I made one. I suffered through reading Christmas fics in July and August just so I could justify posting this one finally.)
still standing by peachsneakers Supernatural AU (Dukeceit) Rating: T When the secrecy around gift shopping highlights just how often it feels like his boyfriend is hiding something, Remus becomes convinced that Dee is cheating on him. (Of course, both of them are very much hiding important things from each other, but fortunately it's not that...) Notes: In which Dee is a vampire, Remus is a werewolf, and they're both insecure idiots about it.
Mistletoe by PanicAtTheEverywhere (elfzhyza) Canonverse (Dukeceit) Rating: G It's the first Christmas after Virgil left, and Remus is determined not to let Deceit give up on the holiday. Notes: A lightly angsty bit of fluff right here.
Holiday Cheer by TheYesterdayShow Canonverse (Gen) Rating: G Virgil hates Christmas so Janus and Remus invite him to celebrate Halloween with them instead. Notes: Extremely fluffy holiday fluff with the darkboys. The fluffiest.
A Sanders Sides Christmas by theantisocialghost Canonverse (Intrulogical, Prinxiety, Moceit) Rating: T Patton decides to invite Deceit and Remus over for Christmas for the first time. Virgil is hesitant, and Roman resistant, but it all goes so much better than anyone could have expected. Notes: A longform, Christmas themed "all the sides becoming a family" fic guaranteed to rot your teeth.
christmas baubles by peachsneakers Canonverse (Gen) Rating: T In the mindscape, the sides decorate their tree with memories. This year is the first Christmas spent with all of them together. Notes: I just really loved the idea of the sides hanging memories on their tree.
Mistletoe by ThatRand0mFand0m Canonverse (Logicality) Rating: T Logan loses a bet with Roman and is forced to wear a mistletoe headband for the entire night. Notes: A cute little 5+1 of Logan getting Christmas kisses.

Something everyone should know either as an authority or as a person labouring under an authority, being anywhere from a babysitter to a parent to a government entity, is that establishing a rule of any kind is incredibly labour-intensive and difficult to enforce.
So if you're going to make something into a rule, it HAS to be something you can both Verify and Enforce- if you can Verify but not Enforce, it's essentially just a suggestion. If it's something you can Enforce but not Verify, you're going to waste a lot of energy and time becoming an authoritarian dictator that nobody likes.
And because the process of Verification and Enforcement BOTH take a LOT of work, it makes no sense to waste all that work on establishing a Rule which has no Function.
For this reason, every Rule you set must perform a Function which gives you a return that is, if not greater, then at least EQUAL to the energy it takes to maintain, in one way or another. Otherwise, the whole system collapses.
Any authority that exists has limited time and limited resources, so it must prioritize rules that minimize the MOST HARM, that are EASIEST TO VERIFY, and are MOST ENFORCEABLE.
So, before you CREATE a rule, you must ask yourself:
What does this rule accomplish?
Is the reward of this rule greater than the expense of establishing it?
Can I verify when this rule has been violated?
Can I feasibly discipline one to violates this rule?
And, what I would argue is almost MOST important after all that,
5. How do I explain this rule in a way that people will want to follow it?
As a parent, for example, "do not set a campfire in the living room" is a good rule, because it is easily explained as a risk to personal safety and property, it's a rare enough situation to come up, it's easy to tell when it's happened, and a consequence like
"you will not be left unsupervised for an extended period of time" or "you will write a report on house fires" could be implemented as discipline.
But as a parent, "no eating outside of meal times" is not a great rule in most circumstances. For one, food is easy to access, the harm that can come from snacking between meals is almost zero, it's almost impossible to prove, and there is no feasible way to stop someone from doing it OR make them WANT to follow it without lowering yourself to abuse.
So, if there is a behaviour an authority wants you to follow, it must first ask itself Why. Then decide if that is reasonable. Then decide if it should be a Rule or a Suggestion.
If the desired rule is not verifiable, or enforceable, then the authority must make peace with the fact that it will be taken as a suggestion. It has no other choice but to become an enemy, and slowly lose all respect and credibility.
You cannot make "no snacking" into a rule. But you CAN say, "this is how you keep a balanced diet, this is how you stay healthy, please don't take more than you'll eat at dinner, save leftovers for later".
You CAN make "no fire pits indoors" into a rule, and you can remain vigilant that it doesn't happen and give it your full focus when it does.
This is where laws based on social or religious judgement fail.
You cannot Verify or Enforce against drugs, crossdressing, homosexuality, sodomy, satanism, tattoos, prostitution, oral sex, or abortion. Not in any way that matters. Not in any way that Protects more than it Harms. It's difficult to prove, difficult to enforce, and it happens too much and too consensually to universally oppose. You can only expend energy and cultivate a population that distrusts you in trying.
You CAN Verify and Enforce against violence, abuse, theft, fraud, embezzlement, discrimination, and murder. Because it DOES Protect more than it Harms, and you can justify the expenses. Because these are things that happen nonconsentually, and can be prioritized, because there are Victims who experience Harm. Enforcing these rules can cultivate safety and trust instead of suspicion, cooperation instead of opposition within a populace.
Which is why laws against anything that does not cause harm, in my opinion, is doomed.
Because I've been raised and raised kids and seen kids raised in both ways, and I know that "because I said so" does nothing.
If you cannot Verify or Enforce, then the best you can do is Educate, provide safe options, and build a system to heal and recover for any potential fallout.
But that’s just my opinion.

you know even if a homeless person or a starving person is in that position because of their own "bad decisions" i don't care. it doesn't matter. no supposed financial misstep is enough to condemn someone to homelessness or poverty.

I haven't reblogged any of it or looked into it myself (or believed any of it), but can you elaborate? Maybe, in case it comes up in convo (cause I have a friend I think who believes it or has mentioned it to me)? If that's not too much to ask. (About Gal Gadot)
So, there’s this trend that happens in liberal/activist spaces, where the second gentiles find out you’re Jewish, they no longer trust you unless you immediately, completely denounce every aspect of Israel down to its very existence.
Example: at UCLA, a Jewish woman named Rachel Beyda applied for the student council. They interrogated her about whether she would be able to be “objective” because she was Jewish. They literally asked her, “Given that you are a Jewish student and very active in the Jewish community, how do you see yourself being able to maintain an unbiased view?”I have experienced this interrogation and distrust personally, in activist spaces at UCSC. At one point I even made a Facebook post about it because I was curious if it was just me and discovered that every other Jewish person I know at UCSC had also experienced something similar. Leftists do not welcome or trust Jews who have any qualms about disavowing Israel. To be clear: I’m NOT talking about acknowledging that the Israeli government is committing human rights violations against Palestinians. That should be obvious, and isn’t inherently antisemitic. What IS antisemitic is this trend that has been going on for years in liberal activist spaces, where the second a Jewish person is involved in literally anything, ie Existing While Jewish, gentiles HAVE to bring up Israel, and quiz us on it until they’re satisfied that we have completely denounced it, including its right to exist. And if we don’t denounce every aspect of it to their satisfaction, then obviously we must support the genocide of Palestinians and are cast out of activist spaces. That’s what’s going on with Gal Godot. The plot of Wonder Woman had NOTHING to do with Israel or Palestine but because she is Israeli, because she served in the Israeli Army (which by the way, is mandatory, and also she served as a goddamn fitness instructor) gentiles are pouring out of the woodwork to deem her “problematic.” And I’m fucking pissed.

The edible I had was pretty small. I ‘felt high’ for an hour or two, but had significantly less pain for nearly eight. It was amazing!
I was especially amazed at how much my migraine melted away.
Me, reading your books before ever trying weed: Oh, so they use it as painkiller in fantasy kingdom cause being slightly high distracts from the pain?
Me, having just had an edible on a pain day: Oh dear lord this stuff is magical :O
*spreads arms* welcome to the wonderful world of medical cannabis.
I got high once and the lack of pain lingered beyond the high and it was great.

this is almost certainly not a novel take but
i do wonder how much of the derisive language you hear toward "resistlib winemoms" or whatever is just "people who grew up in Safely Blue Coastal Enclaves rebelling against ppl who remind them of their mom b/c they are emotionally stunted adults"
like, as A Child Of A Very Conservative Area, i have a very vivid recollection of the first time i encountered this type of person, and my reaction was mostly baffled delight. wait you're telling me this PTA mom with unassailable Wholesome Americana credentials is gassing up the cause of trans rights at her book club. you're telling me she's batting her eyelashes and "think of the children"-ing, except instead of doing that to promote some obnoxious "ban this book from the school curriculum" agenda, she's shaming her state representative into actually funding the damn schools? i do not care how cringe her UV-bleached "i'm with her" bumper sticker is or whatever, she is working extremely hard & successfully on shit i care about and i will brook no slander against her

people say folks with adhd struggle with "delayed rewards" aka long term goals and as such we tend to focus more on short term rewards. what they don't talk about is that at when we Do accomplish long term goals we don't actually feel anything proportionate to the amount of work we did to achieve it. In my head I suffered for a while and then money spontaneously appeared in my bank account.
