Complications in adolescent pregnancy and childbirth
Biologically, an adolescent’s body is still developing and not yet ready to take on an added strain. The pelvic bones are not fully mature, and cephalo- pelvic disproportion could occur. Her body has special nutritional needs and when pregnancy occurs, it is a strain on already depleted reserves, especially if she belongs to a low socio-economic background.
The young girl may not be mentally prepared for motherhood with all its added responsibilities, etc. and this could give rise to mental health problems like depression.
Socio-culturally, pregnancy outside of marriage bears a terrible stigma and the above situation worsens when the girl is not married, in which case she does not get the emotional support she needs as well as support in terms of nutrition, rest, antenatal check-ups, etc.
This situation is not unique to unmarried adolescents as the married ones may not be aware of the importance of antenatal care. For various reasons, the adolescent woman is more likely to deliver at home. The older women in the home feel that a traditional birth attendant is equipped to carry out the delivery, her services are cheaper and she is easily accessible. A trained birth attendant or a hospital is usually thought of when things get out of hand and complications have already set in.
The risks are high, starting from the antenatal period, through labour and the postpartum period. Adolescent mothers are most likely to give birth to low weight babies and both the mother and child face higher mortality and morbidity.
Pregnancy related complications that occur more commonly in adolescents than in adults
Death
Pregnancy-induced hypertension
Anaemia during antenatal period
STIs/HIV
Higher severity of malaria
Pre-term birth
Obstructed labour
Anaemia during postpartum period
Pre-eclampsia
Postpartum depression
Too early repeat pregnancies
Low birth weight
Perinatal and neonatal mortality
Inadequate child care and breastfeeding practices
Problems in the antenatal period
Pregnancy-induced hypertension: Studies report an increased incidence of the condition in young adolescents, when compared with women aged 30-34 years.
Anaemia: There is an increased risk of anaemia in adolescents because of nutritional deficiencies, especially of iron and folic acid, and by malaria and intestinal parasites.
STIs/HIV: Sexually active adolescents are at an increased risk of contracting STIs, including HIV infection, owing to their biological and social vulnerability. There is also the increased risk of mother-to child transmission of HIV in adolescents, because the HIV infection is more likely to be recent, and therefore associated with higher viral loads. The presence of other STIs (syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia) with local inflammation may increase viral shedding, thereby increasing the risk of transmission during labour.
Higher severity of malaria is often seen in first time pregnant women (which includes many adolescents) and is a common cause of anaemia in this group. This puts them at risk and their unborn babies at risk of intra-uterine death.
Problems during labour and delivery
Pre-term birth is common in women under twenty years of age because of immaturity of the reproductive organs, social factors such as poverty, at play.
Obstructed labour in young girls (below 15 years of age) occurs due to the small size of the birth canal leading to cephalo-pelvic disproportion. Lack of access to medical and surgical care can result in complications like vesicovaginal and recto-vaginal fistulae.

Is thumb sucking and pacifier habits harmful for a child’s teeth?
Did you know that it is completely normal for babies and young children to suck their thumb, fingers, or pacifier? Sucking is a natural reflex that provides security and contentment and is a way for young babies to learn about their world. Some even begin sucking on their fingers before they are born.
When should children stop using a pacifier or sucking their thumb?
According to the American Dental Association (ADA), most children stop sucking their thumbs and using pacifiers on their own between two and four years of age. However, some children continue until they are older. Over time, pacifiers and thumb sucking can increase the risk of dental complications and cause jaw misalignment, tooth decay, roof narrowing, slanting teeth, and mouth sores.
As children grow and mature, they develop new ways to self-soothe, relax, and entertain themselves. But some children need the help of their parents and their pediatric dentist to stop their sucking habits.

Teeth Friendly Stocking Stuffers
Stockings are perfect for filling with lots of small gifts that your child wouldn’t otherwise expect. And what’s better than giving your child the gift of a happy, healthy smile? There are many treats you can place in your child’s stocking besides candy canes and other sweets, from small toys to healthy, homemade snacks, and even a few more specifically tooth-themed finds.
A Fun, New Toothbrush
Everyone loves a new toothbrush, and the right one can be just as exciting as a new toy for your child. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends changing your toothbrush every three to four months. Why not start the new year off on the right foot with a brand-new toothbrush?
For younger children, pick a brush that features one of their favorite cartoon characters. Choose a toothbrush that has a smaller head and soft bristles since younger children have sensitive gums. Also, make sure to pick a brush that has an easy-to-hold handle for their smaller hands.
Older children will be excited to get an electric toothbrush in their favorite color, it makes brushing easier and more effective. Since electric toothbrushes are usually automatically timed, they’re a simple way to ensure that your child is brushing for a full two minutes.
Sugar-Free, Cavity-Fighting Xylitol Gum or Lollipops
Kids love sweet surprises, and you can feel good about giving them these sweets that are good for them. Chewing sugar-free Xylitol gum can help produce saliva, which washes away trapped food particles from your teeth. Gum containing xylitol has been proven to help reduce cavities, making it a must-have stocking stuffer for the entire family.
Tooth Fairy Pillow
Tooth pillows are fantastic dental stocking stuffers for small children who are still losing their baby teeth. A happy, cuddly tooth that can accompany them to bed will make them eager to await the Tooth Fairy’s visit.
Flavored Toothpaste and Dental Floss
Fun flavored toothpaste and floss are sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face. And there are some interesting flavors to try. You can choose toothpaste flavors such as watermelon, citrus, cinnamon, ginger, strawberry, and more. Floss is available in cinnamon, coconut, strawberry, grape, bubble gum, orange and even cupcake.

Going to the dentist is a trip that is dreaded by most children. As a parent, it could be a troublesome experience to say the least to take their child to the dentist, since most of the times it is accompanied by unwillingness, restraint, and even the shrill cries! To ease the experience, following are the 5 tricks that you must try on your kid to make the next trip to the pediatric dentist an enjoyable experience for your kids.
1. Positive Role Play
It is important that you prepare your child before going to the dentist in a positive manner. Play the role of a dentist, and let your child play himself/herself. It is up to you to make these roles play experiences fun for your kid. Do what makes him or her happy. For instance, be polite and playful during the experience, to give off the impression that this is how dentists are. This step is a necessity because when the child does not fear the dentist himself, chances are that he would not fear the experience in the clinic either.
2. Let them Get Used to the Sensation of Dental Objects Touching their Teeth
This too, is a preventive measure. It is highly recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) that parents start to use a damp cloth or a clean gauze to clean a child’s teeth, as soon as the first tooth appears. As per the AAP, it not only makes sure that the teeth stay clean, but also creates a sensory experience for the child. This sensory experience is something that is important for the child to get used to as it helps in getting over the fear of the experience in the dental clinic.
3. Accompany your Child with his or her Toys
Comforting your child during the trip to the dentist would only do good to the child’s psyche. Have you wondered why your child cannot stay away from his or her toys? It is simply because he or she finds an unmatched joy in those toys. Hence, keeping what makes them happy during a trip that they might otherwise dread, would only ease the experience for them during the trip. Likewise, keep your child occupied with playful conversations, or his or her favorite music. The idea is to comfort the kid during the trip.

Towards the end of the toddler years, ramp up your teaching efforts so your child understands the importance of oral health and knows what to do to achieve it. Not sure where to start?
Try these 8 tips for teaching your child oral hygiene:
1. Let your child brush their own teeth but supervise their efforts until age 7 or 8 when they’re able to brush effectively. Having them brush in the mirror can help them see what they’re doing.
2. Use a toothbrush timer app or an actual physical timer to help kids brush their teeth for two full minutes each session.
3. Brush along with your child. Show them how to brush all the way to the back molars and along the gum line.
4. Explain to your child what will happen if they don’t brush their teeth or brush them well enough. Talk to them about the causes of tooth decay in children, what cavities are and why it’s best to avoid them. Don’t scare them or use terms like “drill” or “hurt” when talking about the dentist. Instead, give them an overview of why oral hygiene is so important using kid-friendly, positive terms.
5. Just like with brushing, floss for your child until they have the dexterity to do it on their own, usually around age 10. Once they’re older, you can floss your teeth in front of them and walk them through the technique.
6. Fun, kid-themed toothbrushes and tasty toothpastes can go a long way in helping kids get excited about oral hygiene. As for the best toothpaste for kids, we recommend a fluoride toothpaste with the ADA seal of approval.

Tips to soothing sore gums by ABC Kids Dental Group
The bottom incisor is usually the first to show up. You should inspect your child’s gums to check for bumps. This could be a sign that there are newly surfacing teeth. Teething can be slower in some babies than for others. Infants may experience symptoms up to a month before the actual tooth appears.
There are many ways to soothe your gums. There are many ways to soothe gums. These are some ways to ease your baby’s discomfort.
1. Massage your gums
Pressure may be helpful for your baby’s gums. After washing your hands thoroughly, place your baby on the mattress and gently massage their gums with your finger. You may find that your baby will fall asleep and relax by doing this. If your baby wakes up in the middle of the night, you can re-rub the gums.
2. Buy a Cold Washcloth
It’s a good idea for you to get a clean, dry washcloth and soak it in warm water. The water should be rubbed out until the cloth is dry. To cool the washcloth, place it in the freezer or fridge.
Once the washcloth is cool, fold it and give it to your baby to chew on. If your baby is chewing on something (even a washcloth), you should always keep them supervised. This could pose a danger to their health.
3. Refrigerated Teething Toy or Pacifier
You can use a pacifier to soothe your baby’s gums. Make sure to clean the pacifier before you place it in the fridge. Coolness can help to numb your gums and ease some pain.
The same process can be used for teething toys. Any solid toys can be placed in the refrigerator. Avoid liquid- or gel-filled toys that could leak.
4. Make frozen milk popsicles
Teething can cause babies to stop eating while they are growing. Most likely, this is because of discomfort.
You should look for BPA-free popsicle molds and fill them with formula or breastmilk. Popsicles that melt can be messy so make sure you have a bib for your baby. It might be a smart idea to allow your baby to eat them in a highchair.
5. Get Rid of Excessive Drool
While your baby is teething, it’s a good idea to make sure they have a bib. Babies are prone to drool on their clothes and soak them.
To prevent irritation, you should make it a priority for your baby to wash off any drool. To prevent a rash, it is best for your child’s skin to remain dry.

EU Allocates Additional EUR50 Million to Support People Affected by War in Ukraine
The European Union Commission announced that it will allocate another EUR50 million to humanitarian aid for those affected by the conflict in Ukraine.
According to the latest press release by the Commission, EUR45 million of the total amount will be used for humanitarian projects in Ukraine and EUR5 million for Moldova.
According to Theactualizar, this brings the total European Union's humanitarian aid response to the conflict in Ukraine to EUR143 millions.
The EU Commission has allocated additional funding as part of its EUR1 billion pledged support to Ukraine at the global event "Stand Up For Ukraine" last week.
The needs of Ukraine are already huge, with millions of people in conflict zones or on the move. We need to be ready for an increase in Russia’s ruthless aggression on Ukraine, particularly in the east, Commissioner of Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic commented on the decision.
The new funding will be used to address the most urgent humanitarian needs, including shelter, protection, medical services and cash assistance. It will also provide safe drinking water, hygiene and support against gender-based violence.
The Commission stressed that humanitarian needs are still very high in Ukraine, despite heavy fighting and missile attacks.

Denmark Extends Internal Border Controls for Six More Months
The Danish authorities have extended the current controls at the border with Schengen Area countries for six more months. These controls were extended on November 12, 2021 and are due to expire in May 2022.
In 2016, Denmark introduced the first checks at its borders with other Schengen countries. This was in an effort to increase security in the face of terrorist threats.
The Danish Minister of Justice Nick Haekkerup (SOC), has now announced that the border controls would be extended to November 2022 due to concerns about threats posed in Sweden by organized crime.
" In this context and after careful consideration, The Danish government considers the temporary internal border check is a necessary, effective means to counter these risks," wrote the Minister in a letter to the EU Commission. This is part of the procedures for extending border controls.
The Minister noted that there are other methods to achieve the same result as border control.
Nordschleswiger.dk reports that the assessment by the Danish Center for Terrorism Analysis (part of the police intelligence service PET) has concluded that there is a high chance that individuals who pose a threat to Denmark's security could use this situation to enter the country.
Denmark has been continuously increasing border controls for more than five decades.
The Schengen Borders Code allows Member States to reintroduce this measure to reduce threats to internal security or public policy. It emphasizes however that the reintroduction or modification of travel border controls must only be done as a last resort.

"Switzerland has been a major hub for international air traffic. It had over 58 million passengers before the pandemic. The airlines compile information about individual passengers when they book a flight. This is also done in Switzerland. The Federal Office has published a statement that states that airlines must provide PNR information ," to local authorities when flying to a country with PNR.
This data will be required by authorities in each destination for airlines that depart from Switzerland and land on the territory of the European Union, United States or Canada.
In order to combat illicit affairs like crime and terrorism, 62 countries around the world, including the European Union, have established offices that estimate information about passengers on air flights.
Switzerland cannot use the data because there is no legal basis.

Netherlands to Welcome More Tourists This Year, but Figures Are Still Below Pre-pandemic Levels
The Netherlands will receive a greater number of international tourists this year than 2021, but the numbers will still be lower than the 2019 numbers.
These conclusions were reached in the most recent report by Theactualizar, the Dutch tourist board.
Despite Easter being the start of the Dutch tourist season the numbers are still significantly lower than the pre-pandemic levels.
According to NBTC, the main reasons for the current figures are the Coronavirus situation and the war in Ukraine caused by Russia's invasion.
Jos Vranken, NBTC Holland Marketing director, stated that Dutch holidaymakers will travel abroad this year after two years of staying at home. He also stressed that staycations are expected to decrease by 7 percent compared to 2021 figures.
The Netherlands might also receive fewer German tourists this year. They are the country with the highest number of international visitors.
He also stressed that, due to increased fears about the Coronavirus situation in the United States, less Americans would travel to the Netherlands this year.
He said that although it was surprising, the spread of coronaviruses and restrictions on travel were more important reasons for Americans not to visit the Netherlands than war. The Parool agreed.

Tens of Indians Refused Boarding Their Flights to UK due to Lack of Transit Schengen Visas
Recent days have seen tens of thousands of Indian nationals prevented from boarding flights to the United Kingdom via a transit stop in France, Germany, Spain, or the Czech Republic.
Theactualizar reports that European Union-registered air carriers such as Lufthansa and Air France, which fly from India to the UK with a stopover somewhere in one of those four EU countries, no longer allow Indians without a Transit Schengen Visa or another type of valid Schengen Visa to board these flights.
According to Times of India, Mihikaa Bhaskar is also among the affected. She is a student at London College pursuing her master's degree.
Mihikaa was returning to Bengaluru's Kasturinagar on March 16 after visiting her parents during the Easter holiday. Mihikaa tried to return to the UK for her studies but was stopped by Lufthansa flight LH 755, that she had pre-booked at Kempegowda International Airport.
They refused to let me board because I was an Indian passport holder and needed a transit visa to travel to Frankfurt for my two-and a half hour transit time in Frankfurt. "I tried to tell them that I have a valid UK residence permit, and didn't face any transit visa hurdles during my trip from London via Frankfurt to Bengaluru. But they just weren't listening," Mihikaa said about her experience.
She was forced to fly to London via Bahrain because of the obstruction.
Mihikaa is one of many Indian nationals who have had to deal with this issue in recent times.
This requirement is a result of the UK's December 31 2020 departure from the EU, making it a third member to the European bloc. The airlines have not explained why the requirement was applied at this moment.
According to Theactualizar, a Transit Schengen Visa enables travellers to stop and wait in the international transit area of an airport located in the Schengen Area for their flight to their destination country.
