No matter what medium we are playing in, no matter what we do: act, write, direct, produce, sing... each depends on our ability to communicate effectively with great belief in what we have to give. But the actor can't gain confidence by demanding others to praise or approve of them. The actor gains confidence by demonstrating to themselves that they are worthy of it.

Confidence is something you can't "get," but it is something you can build.

False confidence is copping an attitude that you are superior to others. This attitude is not pro-survival for the actor because you really need to be moldable to do your job. In acting, strength is realized by being flexible and open to any criticism and notes. Great acting requires welcoming feedback and trusting the collaborative process between you and the director. If you feel you must protect yourself, your focus will be in your ego, and you will be gauging how safe you are, instead of freely trusting the process. Life Improvement: Acting Your Life

There is a certain way you can act that is powerful. Acting is that which receives. It is a tool of creation, the others being thought and words. Thought, words, and action are the tools that you use to create your world.

 Thoughts create on one level, the highest vibratory level.

 Words step down that vibration into a realm we can begin to sense.

 Actions finally bring the vibration of that which we thought up into a realm we can touch and see. Actions, therefore, are the stage at which we receive our creations.

 Let us look at actions for a moment.

 Actions are the last stage of creation, and are only effective to the extent that they are in line you are your thought and word, and your state of being (the source of the tools of creation).

 When you act, first know why you are acting. What is it for? What is your goal? By your goal shall your fruits be. Then go ahead and act. In your acting, have no doubt, no regrets, and no hesitation. Act all the way to the end. Then take responsibility for your actions, for responsibility is what puts you in a position of power because by owning your actions and their effects, you are in a position to respond. Responsibility gives you response-ability.

 Act with the joy, passion and finality of a person acting as if that was the last action they were performing on earth before they pass on. It may be. Unless it isn't. How would you perform your next act if you knew it was your last? With careful consideration, with full presence and engagement, relishing it, and not attached to the outcome (since you won’t be around to see the outcome). Your main concern would be to really enjoy your last act, enjoy the process and not the end of it. And you would act as if it was your last stand, unwavering. You would fear nothing, for at that point all fear would clearly be False Evidence Appearing Real. Act for the sake of acting. Not for the goal, not for your personal reason or expected result. But simply for spirit. Act for the universal sake of All That Is, What You Are together with all creation. For while you may be the one doing the act, you may not be in a position to know the true purpose of that action. You may have a goal for it, but that is just a motivator.

 For example, say that your goal in an action is to make a certain amount of money. This goal came from a thought, did it not? And where did that thought come from? It came either from your ego (in which case it was a fear masquerading as something else such as a desire to get rich so as to have acceptance) or it came from Your Spirit, in which case it has an effect and sequence of events that may be beyond your imagination. If it came from ego, let spirit correct. If it came from Spirit, Spirit knows the big picture and the exact sequence of events that would lead to the best outcome for you (you are Spirit, even though part of you may not be aware of this). So Spirit, Your Higher Self, inspired you by dropping the thought in your mind, along with a goal as a motivator. Just act on the inspiration. It has built in its own intelligence and pathways that you may not know.

 So don't get attached to the outcome - have a goal, but don't get attached to a particular outcome in the moment of Now. Let What Is be. What Is Right Now is Life, let it Be. Don't say 'I am failing now because right now things are not as I expected.' That is attachment and it can only lead to more negativity. Learn from it, accept it, then choose different for the next moment, but for Now, accept it as it is. What you resist persists.

 Do you know how you get into trouble? By labelling something as wrong, bad, shameful, guilty, and so on. The moment you do that, you disown a part of yourself. And sooner or later, you find yourself in a spot in which you are faced with that which you labelled as bad right in the middle of your life! And it sticks around until you accept it, love it. Then it lets go. Understand that no part of creation is bad, and you will be free of judgement and then free of pain.

 Before the act, calculate everything, know why you are acting, and for what goal. During the act, just enjoy the process with full presence, infusing your love into it, for the emotion is what gives it power to produce good fruit. After the act, let go. Don't worry about the result at the present moment. Be detached. Move on to your next act. Things will fall into place, as they should on their own. Your input was required only before and during the act, not after.

 Another benefit of detachment is that it leaves you free. When you have nothing fixed as an outcome in the moment of now, no one can hold you hostage, not even your own mind. You give no power away to external forces, not even to your ever-in-crisis-about-what-next ego.

Acting and Public Speaking are Worlds Apart!

Acting and public speaking have only two things in common: both need an audience and both involve words coming out of your mouth. That is where the similarities end however. Actors who teach public speaking often disagree with me on this point because they fail to recognize that public speaking is the art of communicating with an audience whereas acting is a means of entertaining an audience.

Admittedly, I do hope that those who are public speaking are entertaining in their delivery but that is not the first priority of the speaker. Your goal in delivering a speech or presentation is to communicate information in some fashion. It may be informative or persuasive. Either way, however, your objective when standing at a lectern or at the head of a boardroom table is the imparting of knowledge to your listeners.

Certainly an acting background can be beneficial for public speaking, but it is important to understand that acting involves taking on the role of a different character. This is definitely the greatest difference between the two. Your goal in acting is to be someone else which is the last thing for you as a speaker. The best public speakers are themselves, first and foremost. Remember, your audience did not come to hear someone else speak: they came to hear you.

What is also interesting is that actors do not need strong communication skills to be great in their craft. Their strength lies in their ability to be someone else. In fact, some actors are shy or introverted, avoiding talk shows and interviews as much as possible. Likewise, being great at public speaking does not mean you will be great in acting. You may or you may not be.

One of the most striking differences between the actor and the public speaker is the quality of voice so obvious with the former, especially stage actors. How Voice Actors Work on Building Their Characters?

People who possess an appealing speaking voice have undoubtedly been told by others many times that should do voiceovers, as if they think that all you need is a good voice. Well, that is far from the case. OK it is helpful to have a good voice to start with but, just like a screen actor, there is more to acting than a pretty face. Think about it, a screen actor has actually got more on his side to help people to believe in his character - he has all of the visual elements, make-up, wardrobe, scenery and lighting to mention just a few. The voice actor however has none of these on his side; he has to rely entirely on his voice to convince listeners that he is playing a role, and not himself.

 So just how do voice actors go about making their voice fit the character - take the example of an audio book, where the speaker may have to convey a multitude of different characters in same breath almost - not so easy.

 The first thing you have to do is categorize the type of learning capabilities you have. People learn through kinaesthetic (or tactile), visual and aural experience and you may not even realise which form makes learning easier for you. Kinaesthetic learning is a learning style in which learning takes place by the learner using their body in order to express a thought, an idea or an understanding of a particular concept. Kinaesthetic and tactile learning styles refer to activities such as running and knitting. Kinaesthetic learning has also been described as the human's body's ability to express itself through movement and dance.

 Visual learning is a learning style in which ideas, concepts, data and other information are associated with images and techniques. Visual learners also prosper when shown graphs, graphic organizers such as webs, concept maps and idea maps, plots, and illustrations, which are some of the techniques used in visual learning to enhance thinking and learning skills.

 Aural learning is a learning style in which a person learns through listening. They may struggle to understand a chapter they've read, but then experience a full understanding as they listen to the class lecture. An auditory learner may benefit by using the speech recognition tool available on many PCs. Aural learners may have a knack for ascertaining the true meaning of someone's words by listening to audible signals like changes in tone. When memorizing a phone number, an aural learner will say it out loud and then remember how it sounded to recall it.

 Let's look at an example; our voice actor has a new role that he has to characterise - the subject is a young male surfer. Our actor hasn't received the full description yet, so using one's imagination is paramount. So we imagine our surfer to be in his mid-teens, 15 or 16 years old. He is muscular, tall and physically well-built, and stands with a concave posture. It is important to be able to visualise this, as our actor will also adopt this stance.

 Although it won't be seen, it will help the actor to get in character; will affect his breathing, and also the way his voice will sound. More characteristics; our surfer is tanned as you would expect and has sun-bleached hair. He is self-confident, but at the same time much of this could be bravado, as his youth still makes him vulnerable. His voice is changing, he tries to ensure it always sounds deep and manly, but at times it inadvertently cracks and momentarily sounds like a child. As you can see we are putting a lot into our character, more than you may have imagined for someone just to be portrayed in sound.

 Here our voice actor is using kinaesthetic and visual learning styles to help to visualise the surfer and bring him to life. Adopting the posture, assuming the juvenile self-importance tinged with vulnerability, even imagining his visual appearance, all help our actor to get the desired result. To make clear how important this is - our voice actor in this case could actually be a 30 year old woman!

 It is important for voice actors to be able to plays roles of their opposite sex, but we will look more closely at that in another article, not here and now. For a voice actor his voice is like an instrument that must be able to handle a wide vocal range, as well as accents, and the portrayal of age.

 So, we can see how the voice actor takes on physical and visual elements of our character to breathe life into it, using his kinaesthetic and visual learning styles to visualise him, understand him, and therefore be able to memorize him, to get into character when required to do so.

 As you can see, details are very important in character building, and the best way to be able to visualize certain traits, idiosyncrasies, and behaviour patterns is to observe the people around you. How they behave in certain situations, and how they react with other people, a limitless source of inspiration around you wherever you go. As well as stage or screen actors, for voice actors it is also extremely important to watch people in daily life, to be able to bring some of these features into your character. One small detail can make a huge difference, a lisp, a stutter, that can make a character memorable to the actor and not least to the audience as well.

Styles of Acting - What Defines the Differences?

When we speak of style, we are generally referring to the genre of the presentation, e.g., drama, comedy, suspense, tragedy, etc. For the style of acting normally follows the genre of the play: drama being portrayed in a dramatic style, comedy in a comedic style, etc. Style is also called the acting key, dramatic key, or sometimes the mood or tone.

 The choice of style is an important one, as it is the culmination of many other dramatic choices. Without a consistent acting style, the portrayal may confuse the audience and create uncertainty about how they respond. It is thus a critical part the actor's craft, knowing how to perform in a number of acting styles. Kids Act LA is here when it comes to learn acting especially for kids.

 Let's begin by defining style. Style is the selection and arrangement of acting elements and qualities to portray the dramatic truth, the purpose of the play. For the acting ensemble, it is the full realization of the characters' convictions. In other words, saying what we want to say just the way we want to say it.

 Therefore, style is truth. It is the means used to express the crux, the essence, and the purpose of the play. It is the selection and arrangement of acting elements. At this point, let us discuss briefly the various elements that make up acting styles.

 REALITY. Each style has a degree and kind of life-likeness that we preconceive by reading or viewing the play. The degree of reality can range from the realistic, naturalistic, to surrealistic (dreamlike) or fantasy, to the absurd.

 As a general principle, reality is more lifelike in the dramatic styles such as drama, suspense, and tragedy, where as in the comedic styles such as straight comedy and farce, it is distorted and exaggerated. Likewise, the balance and proportion of story elements (setting, plot, dialogue, and characterizations) are more logical and believable in the dramatic styles and lack the same when moving towards the comedic styles.

 Reality, the level of suspended believability, will range from the credible in dramatic styles to distorted, unbalanced, and disproportioned in the comedic styles. For the actor, the level of reality, as with all elements of style, must be an ensemble effort. As such, all the characters must exist in the same dramatic world.

 THE DOMINANT DRAMATIC FLOW. The audience perceives each presentation through two communicative entities. One is the information of the play. What we see and hear. The dialogue, action, plot, and setting make up the literal, physical elements. The elements we observe, comprehend, and resolve with little cerebral effort or involvement.

 A dominant dramatic flow that is informational involves limited intellectual processing and is mostly concerned with the obvious surface characteristics of the play. Because the information is mainly words, action, and stage business, it is pointalistic and primarily one-dimensional in flow. What we see is what we get; and we get one point at a time. Thus, the tempo can and should be quick for little time is required for comprehension.

 The other type of dramatic flow is the emotional. This is the implied or inferred element of the presentation, and places importance on meanings, motivations, and expectations resulting from the action. Here the audience is involved with the emotions, rooting interests, and the wants/oppositions - hero/villain polarizations. Imagery, strong caring forces, multi-layered story and character complexities require considerable audience effort and emotional involvement.

 A dominate dramatic flow which is emotional is, for the audience, a more reflective, questioning, decision-making process. While the informational flow displays information, the emotional flow demands a response, a judgment. It requires resolving complex data into a one-dimensional answer such as for/against, caring/hating, friend or foe. This process requires time and as such, the pace is slower. This way, the audience has an opportunity to focus on the underlying emotional forces as well as time to digest and resolve a much more complex presentation.

 TEMPO OR PACE. Tempo or pace is the rate at which interesting story materials are delivered to the audience. Do not look on dialogue as the only factor affecting pace. Action, movement, gestures, and technical aspects (cuts, lights, and sounds) can likewise have a telling affect on the pace of a scene. Music is another dimension affecting pace.

 TIMING. Timing is the ability to sense what is going on in the mind of the audience. It is the ability to use the dimension of time to encourage and enhance the desired response. Let me give you a few examples. In the setup of a joke, the pace at which one expends information is a dimension of timing. In addition, by separating the punch line or resolution from the setup, it can create the desired emphasis, suspense, and/or anticipation. Following the punch line, it is holding for peak laughter and knowing when to continue with the scene. In drama, it is how long one sustains a dramatic point so it is understood and felt to the maximum. In terror, it is that period of time the audience has to speculate the outcome and to be affected by the potential of terror (pain).

 EMOTIONS, INTENTIONS, AND BEHAVIOR are the most basic selections in acting. The natures of these choices likewise relate to the genre of the play and to its style of acting. As with the other style considerations we've discussed, the inter-relationships between acting elements provides helpful dramatic guidelines.

 Emotions are very large consuming forces. They have an active power to cause drastic change and action. These emotions emerge from the character's commitment, the obstacles, the situation, and the world in which the story is set. In the world of comedy, the emotions are light, decisive, and played on the surface so as not to encumber the quick-moving informational content. Emotions in drama, more so than anything else, move the story forward. Thus, the emotions have a wider span, deeply played, and range from full passion to concealment. As you can see, how one expresses and presents these emotional forces determines, in part, the style of acting.

The intention (sometimes called the objective, thought, or motive) is what the character wants. This conscious intent should be rich, simple expression formulated in active terms that, along with the emotion, produces the perceptible behavior.

This behavior, when open, precise, and readable, requires little effort to comprehend. Such behavior is found, more so, in the comedic styles where the intellect predominates.

 On the other hand, it can be subtle, subdued, or even ambiguous, to the point where the audience must search for meaning. This behavior we find in the dramatic styles where strong emotional forces prevail.

How to Build Your Portfolio? Kids Act LA

Each model is required to have a composite card (comp card or ZED Card). A composite card requires 4-7 photographs of the model and the model's stats and agency/manager contact information. Your comp card is a type of standard modeling portfolio.

 Attention, Parents:

Pictures of young children will get outdated rapidly. This will either require continual and expensive re-shoots or will misrepresent your children as they grow.
