this pay it forward stuff made me want to draw some comics. This is something I’ve noticed A LOT especially in the art world since the idea of “your work representing yourself” is so deeply ingrained.
I want to clarify, as someone who’s learned this lesson in the past few years it’s really easy to feel like you need validation from people through your talents and interests. You don’t.
It took me a LONG time to learn this, not because I didn’t understand but because I didn’t realize that most of my self worth was coming from any feedback I had on my art. If a post didn’t get very many notes, I’d feel like I’d done something wrong. Like if somehow I had let down everyone following me.
Art has become a full time job and this industry puts a lot of pressure on “branding yourself”. It’s encouraged to become more of an idea people want to follow than to be honest and healthy with yourself. And while it may not be something that exists everywhere, it is ABSOLUTELY an issue people need to be aware of. I know because a few years ago, I didn’t even realize I had this problem.
So for anyone out there who draws for a living, who feels pressure to be an idealized version of yourself, remember that you need no one’s validation but your own. You are enough.

why do people look like their art styles so much like they don’t look exactly like it but you can look at a person then at their art then back at the person and be like “yes, this is definitely the person who drew this”
