I really hate it when people portray 03 Donnie as a weak minded pacifist because it’s shown multiple times that when push comes to shove he has no problems throwing hands lmao

(Think his attitude towards Usagi when Leo was poisoned homeboy was fr passive aggressive and ready to throw hands if Usagi made one wrong move)

Tbh I think it comes from the fact that he is much less aggressive than his brothers, he’s always more likely to talk things out than to resort to violence but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a weak uwu baby

He’s not weak (him losing the first round of the battle nexus was kinda disappointing for me but then again other people there are serious warriors so…) but he’s weaker compared to his brothers which I think people just take and amplify

That said, he wont win in a one-on-one with his brothers but literally put him in a room with gang fighters and the foot and he will 👏🏻kick👏🏻their👏🏻ass👏🏻

Thank you for the kind words, Anon! I so enjoy these asks, often people bring things up I hadn’t considered before. 

And I so get this. Shortly after I got into this fandom, there was a post floating around Tumblr about how Rise Donnie would teach 03 Donnie to steal, and people in the notes were rightfully like “03 Donnie? Steals? Helicopters??” Like, he acts like a sweet little cinnamon roll, but he’s way more of a badass than a lot of people seem to give him credit for.

I know in a lot of my metas, I do reference him being “weaker”, but I do try to make it clear that I mean that strictly in relation to his brothers, not in general. Humans do not want to go toe-to-toe with 03 Donatello. 03 Donatello will mess them up. One of the first Donnie-centric episodes in 03, “The King”, has Donnie literally sweeping freaking monsters by the dozen in an AU. The guy can fight. 

And what I love about Donnie is… you know, he’s smart, and he’s observant, and he’s situationally aware, and there’s no way he doesn’t know he doesn’t fight quite as well as his brothers. But he’s still so confident in his fighting abilities anyway! Like that time with Usagi you mention - prior to that, Usagi and Leo were fully going at it in a fight and showing that they were more or less equally skilled (i.e. Usagi could mop the floor with Donnie), and Donnie thought that Usagi had successfully poisoned Leo, and Donnie had just experienced an ego-bruising defeat in the first round of that tournament. And yet. He was fully prepared to make rabbit stew out of Usagi (or at least try to) if he got within ten paces of Leo again. Donnie fully understands himself to be a strong and skilled fighter, even if he’s not quite as strong as his brothers, which is just… some really good self-esteem right there. 

What I find interesting is that in much of the TMNT franchise, there seems to be this fairly consistent theme that Raph and Mikey are naturally stronger and better fighters than Donnie and Leo. Leo makes up for it with relentless training and discipline, but 03, 12, Rise… and probably a bunch of the others, make it clear that Raph is pretty well just as good as Leo is, and Mikey would probably be even better if he were more focused. Donnie, like Leo, seems to lack the natural strength Mikey and Raph both have, but he also lacks the time to develop himself the way Leo does. Donnie does a lot for his family. He’s the one literally keeping the lights on, keeping the vehicles running, creating their weapons, developing and monitoring their security systems… the guy clearly doesn’t have the same kind of time his brothers have to train at ninjutsu. Could you imagine if he had the same fighting capabilities as his brothers and his intellect? There’d be no stopping the guy. It makes sense that as a character, his fighting ability gets mildly knee-capped to keep him from getting too OP and beating the snot out of Leo.

What I love about 03, on a character level and a meta level, is that everyone seems to realize just how essential Donnie is to their family. There are multiple episodes and arcs where Donnie gets captured or injured or ill or, uh, mutated into a feral monster, and each time, it’s immediately apparent how helpless the other three get without him. When the Triceratons kidnap him, you end up with baffled Leo and Raph watching Mikey piloting a damn spaceship for some reason trying to rescue him. The Good Genes arc makes it explicit that if any problem comes up that the other three can’t punch into submission, they have no idea what to do. And I’m not trying to shade the other three brothers with that comment - it’s just, the show is aware of how much Donnie contributes to their well-being and ability to fight, despite being a slightly weaker fighter himself. And his family knows. I talked about it in another recent ask, but look how protective both Raph and Mikey get over Donnie. They’re not judgmental or condescending about it - they will murder anyone who tries to hurt him! It’s not, “You suck Donnie, you need to get better,” it’s “Everyone look out for Donnie and fustigate anyone who tries anything with him.”

In terms of his personality, Donnie is more pacifistic and sweet-natured than Leo and Raph, and calmer than Mikey. He has a wide range of interests outside of fighting, and he’s very interested in the other peoples and societies the brothers encounter. With that, he is indeed more inclined to try to come to a peaceful solution to problems before resorting to fighting. Moreover, between Mikey’s rambunctiousness, Raph’s temper, and Leo’s intensity, Donnie tends to be the easiest brother to get along with. It’s no coincidence that he’s pretty close with both Mikey and Raph, who struggle to get along with each other and with Leo. He’s easygoing and patient, he knows how to be a calm port in a storm for Raph, and he has a pretty deep bag of tricks for handling Mikey without getting aggravated with him. It’s easy for people to look at Donnie and see this sweet little meow-meow who’s never done a wrong thing in his life.

It’s just. You gotta catch him when that switch flips. Because there is another side to Donnie, and when he does get pushed to a certain point, he’s threatening to murder Usagi, taking down a dozen Kirby-monsters, machine-gunning a room full of Karai-bots, and impaling Shredder on the Turtle Tunneler. And stealing helicopters.
