@emberc Love this list! Did you ever do these “random things” for Season 3?
Random Stuff - Young Royals Edition™️ (Part 2)
Kristina has Erik's picture on her desk (S2E3):
Is that oranges or tangerines/clementines on the table? (S1E6):
The year Årnäs Estate had been sold to/inherited by Årnäs Family had been the year Sweden had had a political crisis (December Crisis 1768) (S1E3):
"In December 1768, the king refused to sign state documents in protest to his limited power and on 15 December, the king formally resigned his throne in order to bring about the gathering of a new Riksdag, during which a reform to increase his capacity could be introduced. This created a difficult political situation, as he had thereby technically abdicated and the nation was in interregnum. The Hovpartiet suggested that the crisis could be used to stage a coup to establish absolute monarchy. The queen opposed because she did not consider the time right for such a step and advocated negotiation with the Hats (party) and the Caps (party), but at this point, the Hovpartiet for the first time turned to the Crown Prince rather than the queen; however, the crisis could not be used for a coup because the Caps party broke an agreement."
Here is Simon's phone number & e-mail (S1E4):
Meet Alexander's father Ulf Bregé! (S1E3):
Has Alexander talked to Henry & Valter about Wilmon-flirting before they even realized something was going on? Is he the actual source of Wilmon-flirting gossips? 🤔 (S1E2):
(S1E6) 👇
August's dorm room number is 317 (S2E6):
Boris has a Chinese Checkers game on his side table (S2E2):
Hillerska provides fencing as one of the sport activities for its students (S2E5):
Part 1:

An Ode to August’s Black Turtleneck
A post written for YRFavesFest2024, graciously hosted by @youngroyals-events. This is in response to prompt #32.
credit to @all-things-sigust for the screencap
August’s black turtleneck is pitch-perfect characterization via costuming.
Why?
Let’s start with color, because it’s an obvious place to start. August isn’t a straightforward villain, but he plays a villainous role in season one. Villains traditionally wear a lot of black in western media, so it fits in with that aspect of his characterization. This is the part of my post that almost felt silly to write, because it’s so obvious, but it must be stated all the same.
Then there’s the high collar. It’s a guarded look, which goes well with August having so many walls up in the first season. It continues with the villain-coding theme by reminding us of vampire capes and other such sinister accessories. For those of you who are also Interview with the Vampire fans, you’ll probably be reminded of Armand’s turtleneck in season 2 episode 5, which he wears in a scene where he’s finally put on the defensive. Young Royals often communicates August’s vulnerability by showing him naked or half-naked, and what is August’s turtleneck if not the opposite of his nakedness?
credit to @andthatisnotfake for the screencap
The last thing I want to note about August’s turtleneck is the striking contrast with his “white party” outfit in season three. August has dramatic character growth over the course of the series (yes, he does) and the costuming team chooses to reflect this in his changing outfits. The first season gives us August in a lot of darker colors as he plays the antagonist. In season 3, as we learn about August’s past as a victim of the initiations and as someone who wants to change, he wears lighter colors. The guardedness also falls away and we see more open collars. (Not to mention the scene during the sit-in, where August wears a goldish turtleneck and an open white jacket and starts to open up—not all the way—about his eating disorder. Conflicted August, perhaps?) What can I say? We love when costuming reflects a character arc!
You should own a black turtleneck too, by the way.
Unless you don’t want to, or you don’t like the way turtlenecks feel. I mean. Whatever. I’m not the boss of you.
(This is the Fashion Notes With Blue section of the post.)
Fun fact: I owned a black turtleneck sweater even before I started watching Young Royals, and I love it. It’s a classic piece I can pair with lots of other wardrobe items, so it feels like a good investment. It also keeps me warm on my winter commutes.
Generally I tend to style my own turtleneck as part of a mod ensemble or dark academia look. Sometimes I pair it with a coral jumper/pinafore dress, leggings, and boots. Other times I’ll try it with a plaid or tweet skirt, and sometimes a blazer or beret. I have a copper-ish raven skeleton necklace that stands out well against it. All of these looks help me to project a certain level of don’t fuck with me, so I wear them on days when I want that for myself.
I always recommend acquiring a clothing item that reminds you of a blorbo, especially when it’s a solid, comfortable, and versatile wardrobe staple. That’s what my black turtleneck sweater is for me.
What are some of your favorite fandom-inspired wardrobe pieces?
This American Girl doll also wanted to model a black turtleneck for this post. If you think she looks like August’s daughter in an AU fic, no she doesn’t.

The school imposing crazy restrictions as soon as news about what happens on the “inside” reaches the media, and Simon and Wilhelm not being able to hang out as an actual couple because of that: a metaphor for the elite class feeling so threatened by this relationship that they’re closing ranks and trying to physically separate the star-crossed lovers

So Simon breaks up Wille and then…
Wille reaches out to Simon in the library
Then Simon reaches out to Wille at the party
Then Simon writes Wille a song
Then Wilhelm reaches out to Simon to thank him for the song
And then Simon says he never gave up on them
And then Wille follows Simon by chasing an actual moving car
These bitches were never serious about breaking up wtf is this.

If we think of the Queen as a personification of the entire monarchy, she’s suffering and dying most of Season 3 because Wilhelm’s relationship with Simon is threatening the survival of the monarchy.
The monarchy has also turned its back on Wilhelm as soon as he accepted his queerness, however much they may try to pretend to be civil and in control when in public.

For maybe the first time in history, love and acceptance are the dominant cultural phenomenon. I mean, when has it ever been uncool to hate on someone for their size or color or sexual orientation or gender identity etc.. I try to imagine the impact this has had on kids and teenagers who are able to accept and be proud in who they are.
I just don’t understand why anyone (religious or otherwise) would disagree with that. Why would you want to hate? A world without judgement is only going to benefit your kids and grandkids and neighbors and friends.
Bigotry is so weird.

Maybe Wille is thinking of his mom, who did fuck him over, but who he keeps trying to reach anyway 😢
During that classroom scene in S3E1, when Felice says, “…they think it’s degrading to miss someone who’s fucked you over so damn hard.”
And Simon replies, “well it is degrading.” His face looks so small like he’s not just talking about Sara. Then we get that great cut to Wille’s equally somber expression and I’m just :((( about it all :(

I actually think this is spot on. I’ve always thought the little tussle between Wille and August to hold his luggage - in the very first episode when Wille is being dropped to Hillerska … was foreshadowing. Well August ‘wins’ in that scene. He literally takes the baggage off Wille’s hands, while Wille is saying “I can do it”
The ink heart drawing and what it means
Simon draws a heart on Wille's hand, and it's very cute and teenager of him, but he's also creating a symbol of their love. On Wille's left hand, the one on the side of the heart.
He's doing it with his hand on Wille's left wrist, over Erik's clock. Which is covered by his pink sweater. Red is the colour of trauma in YR, and Wille is literally wearing a fair coloured version of it.
Wille didn't reject the tattoo idea, he said his mother would cut his head off if he got one. Decapitating Royals, another nod to the French revolution.
It tells us that it's what she's trying to do - murder their love. Because it's making her sick. Literally. That's her feelings about her son's sexuality and his love for Simon.
Near the end of episode 1, Wille fondles the hand with the heart drawing. He's revelling in the love he and Simon shares. He wishes it was permanent. But he's not allowed. And it's already fading.
Wille loves Simon and can't let that happen. But look what we see in the foreground when he's reaching for the pen: Erik’s watch!
He's choosing the pen, to ink the symbol of love into his skin again.
He’s choosing Simon’s love. He redraws the heart that was faded. He leaves his survivor guilt behind. That's a massive amount of foreshadowing!
He's so happy too! Loving Simon makes him happy. Love makes him happy. And he's never had that before.
But of course, the red lights are inescapable. They're shaped like a crown, the red light of the trauma it causes right behind him.
And in the very next scene, he recieves a message from Farima about "concerning news" with an order to call her.
What a moodkill.
Kristina says "One day you'll be a wonderful king, Wilhelm."
Wille replies "What happens if I don't want that?"
His mother is the monarchy. As simon told him in season 2, he is the monarchy.
Crown Prince Wilhelm will have to decapitate himself- not literally of course, it's a liberation, not death - so he can make that love permanent.
He needs to renounce his right to the line of succession. Only then can he get his and Simon's love inked it into his hand and his heart forever.
And now we know this is what Wille wants. He wants Simon. He wants love, without the burden of legacy and survivors guilt.

My silly little S3 trailer observations:
1) Simon goes to the palace wearing his sweatshirt and button-down combo, then he buttons up his shirt to appear more formal
2) I think all this is the same evening, yes the hallway hanky-panky too. Seems like the same vibe and the white shirts are their uniform shirts imo…
3) The same paparazzi clicking Wille, and then Simon, as they return to Hillerska
4) “Can’t we forget about what has happened, for one night?” seems to refer to this night. There seems to be some tension between Wille and Simon… and Wille is drinking again after abstaining all of S2 💀 . Then they sneak out to the lakeside..

I sometimes sympathize with Queen Kristina in S2 and then I remember this:
Jan-Olof would have never had the guts to try to use physical force on the Crown Prince unless the Queen explicitly allowed it. On her own son. And had his own security detail do it.

I know shit hit the fan in S2 Episode 5, but in hindsight it’s so brilliant that Simon and Wille were in such a good place when Simon gave what turned out to be the only performance of “Simon’s song”. <royal court = 💩 >
The intense eye contact and shy smiles and Simon literally singing a love song to Wille at the fucking Valentine’s ball. Marcus who?
Also so glad that Simon got his moment to show his talent in front of the whole school and got such mad applause that the headmistress was actually whooping(!)
