I’m Still Here! I’ve been so much less active on posts lately because life is happening. We can plan and prepare and anticipate the best and most beautiful moments, but sometimes life hits HARD. Black Lives are in danger now more than ever, we are in the midst of a pandemic, and my industry is on life support, and barely functioning. • WE ARE AN EVENT INDUSTRY IN CRISIS, AND WE NEED YOUR HELP! @senatemajldr @chuckschumer @speakerpelosi @senatormarcorubio @senbobcasey @senatoriovino @senatorleahy • The average wedding in the United States encompasses the services of 12-15 small businesses. Those small businesses in turn purchase goods from a multitude of other businesses. We are all part of a MASSIVE group of American businesses that are being devastated by #COVID-19. Employing over 12.8 million people in the US, and contributing over $38 billion of taxable revenue, the AMERICAN EVENT INDUSTRY is comprised of event venues, caterers, planners, producers, designers, rental companies, make-up artists, florists and floral suppliers, photographers, rental companies, stationers, dress designers, audio-visual teams, entertainment performers, lighting professionals, and SO MANY MORE that are not being served by any relief efforts. Everyday last week was challenging because I am trying to process the brutal murders of black people that continue across America. I have been contacted by some of my white #wedding professional friends and colleagues and I am struggling. I’ve been in mourning because George Floyd is my family. Anyone in my family could be a headline tomorrow for the very same “crime”-Breathing While Black. • Too often, as black people we have to explain ourselves. We have to educate you on the microaggressions, we have to explain to you why your views are racist and exclusionary, we have to put on a face, censor the way we express ourselves in your presence, work extra hard to not feed into the stereotypes that you were raised with. That shit is exhausting! We are exhausted! • Going forward, I want to see change from the Pittsburgh wedding community. The black squares and hashtags are on trend. Right now it’s cool to show everyone that you’re not racist. In 2 weeks, 2 months and 2 years, I want to see the actions behind the talk. I want to see changes in your portfolios, true diversity and inclusion on your websites, I want to see #diverse vendor teams. Add black professionals to your referral list. I want to see more than #tokenism. Be intentional. Be the change. It’s such a beautiful #Sunday! I’ve been “off” social media lately because I have been enjoying some quiet time. These past 2 months have pushed me to look deep and work from within. During this time, I’m choosing carefully, who and what to give my energy to. • It sucks that I’m not meeting as many new couples right now and that I won’t get to create beautiful wedding day stationery for Summer couples. It sucks that I can’t socialize with my #pittsburgh wedding community. It sucks that so many #weddings are canceled. • I can honestly say though, that the solitude that COVID has enforced, hasn’t been all bad. Feeling GRATEFUL for the positive things that have been coming out of this crazy ass storm. Still so happy for this amazing photo @adam_michaels. Hope to work together again soon.
