Writing organization, founded in 1923, gets a millennial makeover
The Alabama Writers’ Conclave beefed up its digital presence this summer working with Capstone Agency, the student-run communications firm at the University of Alabama. The conclave, which has supported the development of Alabama writers since 1923, had a dated website with a photocopied logo and a Facebook page that didn’t reflect the current membership.

Safe Travels
University of Montevallo Coursework MC 300- Story Written: March 10, 2016 By: Keyanna James
Safe Travels
It is time for Spring Break and everybody is heading out for fun. As you pack up a week’s worth of clothes and load up your vehicles, take the time to reflect on this. Distracted driving is an epidemic that takes so many lives.
According to distraction.gov, in 2013, 3,154 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. Drivers in their 20s make up 27 percent of the distracted drivers in these fatal crashes.
What classifies as a distraction?
A distraction is defined as something that makes it difficult to think or pay attention to the objective, which is driving.
This means that texting, using a cell phone or smartphone, eating and drinking, talking to passengers, grooming, reading, including maps, using a navigation system, watching a video, adjusting a radio, CD player, or MP3 player are all distractions.
I surveyed 100 college students here in Central Alabama, randomly, as well as many of my personal friends and family. To my surprise 98 percent admit to participating in more than one of the above listed distractions.
Carolina Sanchez, from Macon, Georgia, a student at UAB, says, “I have done everyone of these things while driving. I have been lucky to not have wrecked so far.”
Antonio Johnson, from Birmingham, a student at Virginia College, says he has actually been in a wreck, he and the other driver were distracted. Johnson says that he is thankful that everyone turned out okay but now he definitely takes more precautions not to be distracted.
“I do not think it should take an accident for people to take driving seriously, I encourage everyone to drive distraction free,” says Johnson.
The Triple A Foundation did a study November 2013 and found that distracting events include "latency". Latency means that your brain has not switched back to the task of driving.
Example, texting while stopped at a traffic light can negatively affect full driving engagement once the light turns green for an average of 27 seconds after you've stopped texting.
How can we remedy this?
I spoke with a law enforcement officer, Jackson Pearson, who says that, the government has done its part by making is illegal for people of any age to text and drive.
Jackson says, “As an officer we are told that it is hard to prove but if a driver is violating a law due to phone usage to address it.”
Distraction.gov says that the best way to end distracted driving is to educate Americans about the danger it poses.
I challenge you to take a pledge to be a good driver and to just dive when behind the wheel.
· Log on to www.distraction.gov
· Select ‘Pledge’ under Take Action.
· Download and sign the pledge.
Spread the word to everyone you know.
Share your pledge to be a better driver with your friends and family. On your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram accounts and anywhere else that you can reach people.
Post about distracted driving and ask people to join you in taking the pledge.
Use the hashtag JustDrive.
With widespread awareness we can turn our roads into a safe place.
Take a selfie with your pledge and post it with #JustDrive.

#OscarsSoWhite
University of Montevallo Coursework MC 300- Opinion Written: January 21, 2016 By: Keyanna James
#OscarsSoWhite Currently a lot of traction is being given to the fact that minorities were not nominated for any of the Oscar categories. Some celebrities are calling for a boycott on the Oscars and have declared that they will not be in attendance. Let me first say this is a lie. The Weekend and Duke Johnson are nominated. Calling for a boycott because no screen actors or actresses were nominated does not mean not black people were, there are so many other categories. I think the complaining celebrities are robbing The Weekend and Duke Johnson of their victory. Stacy Dash took to the media and stated that we, as minorities, are segregating ourselves by acknowledging and supporting the BET Awards, even Black History Month. Question: When do we decide that an invention made by a black man is no more or lack thereof than that of a white man? Black History month is celebrated in February which also happens to be the shortest. There are no other months on the calendar like it nor any other months celebrated solely for another race. Do not get me wrong, I am thankful Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream and took the initiative to brake the chains of segregation in the south. When King was making a way for us to legally coexist with everyone, no matter race, ethnicity or culture, I do not think he expected us to get special treatment.

Film Analysis of Relationships
University of Montevallo Coursework Written: October 12, 2015 Film Analysis of Relationships By: Keyanna James Fifty Shades of Grey
The film Fifty Shades of Grey surrounds the relationship of Anastasia Steel (Ana) and Christian Grey.
Ana and Christian enter the initiating stage when they meet for an interview for the school paper. This meeting doubles for the experimenting stage because questions are being asked, Christian also asks Ana a question or two.
Christian some how finds Ana at work and more of the experimenting stage is explored by the two of them. They plan another encounter, professional, in the form of a photo shoot. After the shoot Christian has asked Ana to join him for a cup of coffee. During the coffee date the experimenting stage is further explored, but also we see a bit of stagnating when Christian ends the date and insists that he is not the man for Ana.
Ana goes on with her life and out the blue Christian send her a gift. Her response is to contact him to reject it while intoxicated. Christian hearing this decides to recue her. Christian located her at a bar, defends her honor and takes her home with him. I would count this as a part of the integrating stage but no words were exchanged between the two of they to clarify this. The next morning when Ana awakes in Christian’s hotel room, she is given specific instruction on a note on the bedside table to eat and drink, what appears to be a hang on deterrent, I think this also means the Christian cares. Christian returns from a run and the two of them discuss the night. Christian expressed that Ana should not drink so much. Ana asked if he changed her clothes, and where did he sleep, she is also concerned that they had intercourse and Christian assures her that they did not. Christian also at this point expresses that sleeping in the bed next Ana was new for him. In this scene they are entertaining the experimenting, and integrating stages. The intensifying stage is expressed in the hotel room as well, when Ana asks Christian why she is in his room and he expresses that he incapable of leaving` her alone. Ana response is that she should not leave her alone. Another date is planned, and the desire to advance in intimacy is expressed and a very passionate kiss is exchanged in the elevator; all a part of intensifying.
Date night happens and it is epic, plane ride and an over night trip, no bags needed. Upon arriving at Christian’s home Ana is given a confidentiality contract, which she willing signs. I am counting this in the experimenting stage. Christian begins to give Ana a tour of his home and advises her that she can leave at any time and the plane is ready to take her home. She agrees to keep exploring. Christian shows Ana his playroom, and she keep a very open mind. This area is kind of like Differentiating because Christian is basically saying this is me and what I like. You can come if you want to, if not I can take you home. It is also experimenting stage because Ana is learning more about Christian.
The basis of the relationship is established when Christian expresses that there would be a contract to sign and what his expectations are. I would say this is the bonding stage, its no marriage but a commit is being asked for.
Ana later expresses that she is still virgin and Christian takes her to bed. They spend the night together in the same bed and Ana feels like this could possibly be a normal relationship. Christian expresses that he still wants the type of relationship first expressed and Ana is kind of rebelling and has a lot of questions. Ana then asks to go home, and Christian complies. This the first appearance of the stagnating stage. Christian stops on the way to Ana apartment and asks her to take a walk with him, she does and they further discus the relationship. Christian expresses to Ana how things are different with her, the intensifying stage. Upon arrival at Ana’s apartment Christian hands her the contracts and instructs her to email him. She implies that her computer is broken unaware of the fact that Christian has had it replaced.
Now that Ana has her new computer and a lot of thinking to do, they enter the avoiding stage. Ana takes her time looking at the contract, slowing researching things she is unsure about. In the mean time Christian is messaging her and making sure she is at least working on it Ana tells Christian nice knowing you in one of her text and the next thing she knew, he was in her apartment to remind her of how ‘nice’ it was; this act launches them back into the intensifying stage.
Ana asks for a business meeting to discus the contract. During this meeting the experimenting stage is in affect. Changes are made to the contract but Ana still does not sign it.
Ana graduates and Christian is the speaker at the graduation. Christian meets Ana’s father and gives her a car as her graduation gift. He slightly introduces her to his world of dominate and sub by spanking her for rolling her eyes ate him, but he does not stay. This makes Ana sad but he doesn’t her a chance to express her feeling and she cries. This is a mixture of multiple stages, experimenting, intensifying and stagnating.
Ana goes to Christian’s home for the weekend, they do things Christian’s way for a night. The next day they go to Christian’s parents home for dinner. The experimental stage takes place, Ana expresses that she is going to see her mom, which makes Christian angry. Ana expresses that she needs more, she wants dates, and to sleep in bed with him and to be able to touch him. This scene shows them in the differentiating stage.
Ana goes to see her mother and ignores Christians calls because he expresses that he is going to have dinner with a friend and she was jealous. Christian shows up in Georgia to check on Ana, and they go on a date Christian expresses that he is trying to give Ana more, just before he is called away on business. The intensifying and integrating stages are expressed.
Ana returns to Christian’s home and they have great interaction. But Ana still wants to touch Christian and he is opposed to having the conversation they get into a small disagreement and Ana asks that if she hated being punished as much as he hates for her to touch him would he still want to punish her, Christian expresses that he would not want to but that doesn’t mean that he would not need to. Ana asks Christian to show her the worst that he would ever do to her. Christian does, Ana feel miserable and the relationship is terminated by Ana.
They never really have a circumscribing stage unless you count the fact that they never fully addressed the fact that Ana wanted a normal relationship and Christian couldn’t give it to her and they had intercourse anyway.
This relationship showed many turning points. The first being the get to know time was the coffee date. The quality time was the first official date, which resulted in Ana’s first time. Physical separation happened when Ana was taking her time going through the contract as well as when she went to Georgia to see her mother. Reunion happened when Christian showed up in Ana’s apartment as well as when he showed up in Georgia. Passion was first expressed in the elevator when Ana was leaving the hotel, then again in Christian’s home when Ana have sex for the first time, as well as every time after that. Disengagement took place fully when Ana ended things and left Christian’s home in the last scene of the movie. Exclusivity was when Christian offered Ana the contract and the room in his home. Noticeable positive psychic change occurred when Christian offered to add a weekly date night to the contract to please Ana. Negative psychic change occurred when Christian show Ana the worst that he would ever do to her. Sacrifice is offered all throughout the movie in the form of gifts from Christian to Ana; first edition books, computer replacement, car and the various adventurous dates, not to mentions the gift Ana gave Christian of her body. Making up and serious commitment is not expressed in this movie.
This movie from start to finish is about the relationship between these two people, although not traditional, it puts in prospective how these two theories are used.
