Caves are unique in so many ways. Because of literal, geological and historical reasons Edakkal caves in Wayanad is no different. The Neolithic rock carvings make it special. The area is protected by UNESCO for the immense biodiversity in Nilgiri biosphere. Situated about 25 kilometers from Kalpetta Edakkal caves are located in the island of Edakkal. The caves are one of the hot tourist destinations in Kerala. Thousands of tourists visit Edakkal caves every year to enjoy the natural beauty and legendary status.
The caves was discovered by the then superintendent of police of Malabar district Mr. Fred Fawcett during hunting. He found it to the west of Edakkal Mala and when he explored it, he found out that it was the habitat of Neolithic people. The Edakkal caves are famous for its paintings of humans, animals, symbols and letters. These paintings are believed to be of the period of 6000 BC. The etchings and pre-historic line drawings are a testament the culture and life of the people who lived at that time.
In the Edakkal caves, you can see Stone Age carvings on the walls of the caves in the inner parts. The work leaves you awestruck and the carvings are believed to be from the Neolithic and Mesolithic age. On the walls, you can see Tamil and Brahmi inscriptions too. Some part of the Edakkal caves are petroglyphs. There are three types of petroglyphs in Edakkal caves and the oldest one is 8000 years old. The trek through Ambukuthi Hills to reach Edakkal caves is a splendid experience. Along the way, you will be able to see coffee plantations, carvings of Adam, Eve and Satan. Edakkal caves are technically fissures.
Due to natural weathering, deep fissures were formed in the rocks and resulted in cave like structure. There are two parts in the caves. Lower chamber and upper chamber. The lower chamber is 18 feet long, 12 feet wide and 10 feet high. People can easily enter into this chamber. Second chamber is 96 feet long, 22 feet wide and 18 feet high which is connected with a small passage from the first chamber. People should climb a bit to reach the second chamber.
Until 1894, Edakkal caves remained undiscovered and the Neolithic secrets left untold. Trekking to Edakkal caves can be an adventurous experience. You should be physically fit for it.
