Not that anybody asked, but I think it's important to understand how shame and guilt actually work before you try to use it for good.
It's a necessary emotion. There are reasons we have it. It makes everything so. much. worse. when you use it wrong.
Shame and guilt are DE-motivators. They are meant to stop behavior, not promote it. You cannot, ever, in any meaningful way, guilt someone into doing good. You can only shame them into not doing bad.
Let's say you're a parent and your kid is having issues.
Swearing in class? Shame could work. You want them to stop it. Keep it in proportion*, and it might help. *(KEEP IT IN PROPORTION!!!)
Not doing their homework? NO! STOP! NO NOT DO THAT! EVER! EVER! EVER! You want them to start to do their homework. Shaming them will have to opposite effect! You have demotivated them! They will double down on NOT doing it. Not because they are being oppositional, but because that's what shame does!
You can't guilt people into building better habits, being more successful, or getting more involved. That requires encouragement. You need to motivate for that stuff!
If you want it in a simple phrase:
You can shame someone out of being a bad person, but you can't shame them into being a good person.

Rewriting Stella to resemble her inspiration
Now I'm not saying that if you're inspired by something then what you're creating should resemble that thing 1 to 1. But because Vivziepop herself compared Stella to Beatrice despite the comparison being objectively wrong, and because I have Bojack Horseman brainrot, I've decided to actually compare the two characters and change Stella a bit.
obviously I'm not a professional writer.
a quick rundown of Beatrice's life and how her circumstances affected her personality:
she was a normal girl born into a family with a mysogynistic and unsympathetic father Joseph who forced traditional feminine views on her (i.e. being thin, finding a husband and giving birth)
her mother Honey loved her son Crackerjack a lot and had an intense mental breakdown after learning he's dead, to the point of trying to kill herself in a car crash and putting her daughter in danger. This led to Joseph having her lobotomized and Honey herself telling young Beatrice to never love anyone again.
we can see why Beatrice is so full of hatred now. The truth is that she's capable of love, but back when she was a child she was afraid of ending up like her mother, unstable.
fast forward to her meeting with Butterscotch and the eventual pregnancy. While it's not stated why she didn't get an abortion, it can be attributed to three factors: childhood trauma, the views of that time (the 1960's), and the views her own father forced on her. Soon after giving birth to Bojack she realises it was a mistake to keep him, as well as marrying Butterscotch.
like any abusive and toxic parent, Beatrice releases her anger on both her husband and her child.
Beatrice's married life is influenced by her suppressing love and affection, regretting giving birth to Bojack, and Butterscotch being incompetent in general. If you've watched the full show you know what I'm talking. But this post is not about him.
as you can see, Beatrice is not one-dimensional like Stella. She has actual reasons for being the way she is.
the main differences between them are:
Stella was forced into an affair with Stolas. Beatrice having sex with Butterscotch was her own choice.
Beatrice was a normal child. Stella was cruel.
Stella torments Stolas for her own entertainment, while Beatrice argues with Butterscotch because she is unhappy with her life.
now, if I were a writer on the show and were allowed to change and flesh out Stella's character, as well as, like I said, make her similar to Beatrice, here's what I would write:
Stella was born a kind-hearted girl but raised in a very sexist environment. When she was a kid she was repeatedly told that her purpose in life would be marrying a man and giving birth to a child.
throughout her entire life Stella was trained to be a good mother and wife, which she didn't enjoy at all.
when Stella was a teenager she thought about rebelling against Paimon to pursue her own interests, but obviously she would get in serious trouble for that. So she succumbed to the unfair circumstances, which in the show would have been the turning point for her character.
here we have a Stella who hates Stolas not because it makes her feel good, but because she never wanted to be with him in the first place.
with Octavia, we can go two routes: either Stella loves her daughter or she doesn't. I want to describe both options.
If Stella loves Octavia, it's because she knows that, because she is female, she would have to deal with similar sexist views that Stella had to deal with when she was Octavia's age. She wouldn't want Octavia to suffer more.
If Stella hates Octavia, it's for the similar reason Beatrice hates Bojack: Octavia would be a reminder of how miserable Stella's situation is.
phew.
that was a lot.
if you actually read this, I hope you've enjoyed my fictional horse-related ramblings and me trying to improve a badly written """villain""" (villain in quotes because Stella is so boring in that regard)
also I'm absolutely not trying to justify abuse. Beatrice or Stella having sympathetic backstories doesn't make them less terrible.

My name is Ahmed, and I’m from Gaza. During this war, I’ve been finding tiny, helpless animals under the rubble—puppies and kittens who have lost their mothers, crying from hunger and shivering in the cold.
These innocent souls have no one to protect them, and their suffering is heartbreaking. They’re not just animals—they’re lives in desperate need of care, warmth, and food.
Your support can help me save them. Together, we can give these voiceless creatures a chance to survive.

🚨 We Need Your Kindness to Survive 🚨
Hello, My name is Mosab Elderawi, and I live in Gaza with my family. Life here has become harder than I ever imagined, and I’m writing this with hope in my heart that you might hear our story.
The ongoing war has devastated my family. We’ve lost 25 family members—each one a beloved part of our lives, taken too soon. I miss them deeply—their laughter, their presence, their love. Every day is a reminder of this unimaginable loss.

We are now facing daily challenges to survive—things that most people take for granted, like food, clean water, and a safe place to sleep. The harsh realities of life here have replaced our dreams with the constant fight for survival.
Our Current Situation:
💔 Lost Stability: The war has left us without work or a stable source of income. Basic Needs: Food and water are becoming harder to afford with rising prices and scarce resources. 📚 Dreams on Hold: Like so many here, my family’s dreams have been replaced by the need to simply survive. 😢 Unimaginable Loss: Losing 25 loved ones has left a void that can never be filled.
How You Can Help:
I’m sharing our story with the hope that someone out there might care. Even $5 can make a big difference for us, and if you’re unable to donate, just reblogging this post can help spread the word.
Your kindness, no matter how small, is something we’ll never forget.
What This Means to Us:
Your support is not about changing our entire situation—it’s about giving us a little relief, a little hope, and a way to keep going. We are not asking for much, and we understand if you can’t donate. Sharing our story is just as valuable to us as a donation.
Thank you for reading this far. It means the world to us to know that someone is listening. Your kindness gives us strength and helps us believe in a better tomorrow.
With all our gratitude, Mosab Elderawi and Family ❤️

Help Mohamad reunite his family and clear his debt
I am reaching out on behalf of my dear friend, Mohamad S., who is facing one of the most challenging times of his life. Mohamad is 37 years old and left his homeland in 2015 in search of a safer and better future. He’s a kind, hardworking man, and his small family has always been his greatest priority.
Living abroad, Mohamad has recently endured unimaginable loss and financial strain. Amidst the ongoing conflict in his homeland, his mother passed away, leaving behind his sister and her five young children—the last remaining members of his immediate family.
As the situation worsened, Mohamad managed to help his sister and her children escape to safety in Egypt, covering their immediate needs and securing a temporary refuge for them. Since then, he has been fully responsible for providing everything they need to survive during this transition.
In his efforts to support his family and cope with this devastating loss, Mohamad has found himself deeply in debt. To make matters even more difficult, he recently underwent knee surgery, which limits his ability to return to work for the foreseeable future. This has made it even harder for him to manage his financial responsibilities and the pressing need to provide his family with a stable future.
Mohamad is now working to bring his sister and her five children to join him in Belgium, where he hopes they can find stability and opportunity after all they’ve endured. This transition, however, requires significant resources that he is currently unable to meet alone.
For privacy reasons, we are not sharing Mohamad’s full name, as he has chosen to keep his identity discreet. While he initially refused the idea of asking for help, I couldn’t stand by and watch him struggle alone. I insisted on doing this for him because he deserves a chance to overcome these challenges and provide a stable future for his family.
Your contribution will help Mohamad repay the debt incurred during this difficult time, cover ongoing living expenses for his family, and assist with the costs involved in bringing them safely to Belgium.
Mohamad has been a good friend of mine for years, and I’ve always admired his resilience and generosity. Any support, no matter the size, will make an incredible difference in helping Mohamad and his family rebuild their lives after these painful experiences.
Thank you for reading his story and considering helping a man who has always done everything he can for his loved ones.
