Embroidery Art by Sheena Liam
Meet Sheena Liam, an international model working in Los Angeles, Paris, and London with a unique hobby that might surprise you: embroidery.
With black embroidery thread, she stitches clean feminine profiles — all of whom are reminiscent of herself. “Most of my work are based off photographs of me,” she says, “I usually work off a photo of myself to create a sketch which once finalized into neat outlines gets transfered unto canvas then I begin stitching.” Follow her on Instagram to stay up to date with her latest pieces.

For In Phillis Wheatley I proved intellectual equality in the midst of slavery, Elizabeth Catlett depicted Wheatley, the first African American to publish a book of poetry (Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, 1773), with her quill poised over a fresh page. The women standing behind her with shackled hands offer a biting reminder that Wheatley achieved prominence despite being enslaved by a white family in Boston. Her writings inspired many who were active in the movement to end slavery. This week, we’re featuring prints from Elizabeth Catlett’s The Negro Woman series. The entire series will go on view later this spring as part of a new permanent collection exhibition. See the entire series on our website. [Elizabeth Catlett (1915–2012), In Phillis Wheatley I proved intellectual equality in the midst of slavery, 1946, printed 1989. From the series The Negro Woman. Linoleum cut, sheet: 10 9/16 × 7 9/16 in. (26.8 × 19.2 cm). Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; purchase, with funds from the Print Committee 95.196. Florence Kasumba as the Wicked Witch of the East in NBC’s “Emerald City”
“NBC has given a 10-episode straight-to-series order for “Emerald City,” a reimagining of the classic Frank L. Baum books that have inspired everything from “The Wizard Of Oz” to “Wicked.”
Based on the 14-book series that first created the Land of Oz, “Emerald City” is described as a dramatic and modern retelling of the tales that include lethal warriors, competing kingdoms, and the infamous wizard as we’ve never seen him before.” via shadowandact
