loyalty is key to kai.  she comes from a unique family; they all share the same genetic trait ( hydrokinesis to various degrees ) and for that, they are very tight knit.  they are also very proud of their heritage and maintaining that connection to their ancestors.  because of that, she has been raised where loyalty and respect go hand-in-hand and that extends to the world around her, not just to people.  she is loyal to the earth, to the planet and she respects it in turn.  

once she has pledged loyalty to someone, whether spoken or not, she does not take that relationship lightly.  she does not know how to cope with betrayal of her trust.  that is why not very many people are aware of her abilities.

Kai has had little to no exposure to snakes at all.  here is one species of snake, the brahminy blind snake and it might be the most adorable snake ever.  it is the only one on the islands and really the only one she has seen.  however, the idea of a larger snake or something like that, she is not so certain how she might react.  she doesn’t hate them, but she isn’t overly comfortable around them.  give her a shark any day.

        “ oh yes!  it is very important to be a good swimmer if you are going to go near water.  and us mermaids love to play, you need to be fast and strong to keep up with us, “ she encouraged him, even going so far as to drop a droplet of water on the tip of his nose.  her hands had been completely dry but it was easy to pull moisture together and form one for the effect.

       she had to stretch a little to reach out towards shogo, tugging and poking at his shoe and foot with a smile.  “ peanut butter and jellyfish sandwiches, of course, “ the answer was totally for him, usually one that got a laugh.  well, most of the time and from most kids.  there had been that one little girl in hoboken that argued how impossible it would be . . . kai had pitied that girls’ parents at that point.  “ but you have to be careful, the bread gets soggy really fast. “

    the noise coming from the growing crowd was the one thing that managed to get mei to unglue her screen from her phone. a little annoyed, but more curious than anything, she got up from her sit on the bench and made her way toward the gathering of people in awe. thanks to her small figure, mei didn’t have much trouble traveling through the crowd. her reaction was the same as everyone else when she stood in front of the fountain; lips pulled into a smile, a soft ‘woaaah~’  slipping past them as she admired the dancing water. 

    she held up her phone to capture the water show ( which was totally instagram worthy ), but then accidentally stepped on somebody’s foot when she took a step back to get a better picture. 

   “ oh gosh, so sorry, i didn’t see you–”

       the same time she was bumped and stepped on, the water paused in its show. dammit, that hadn’t been what she wanted at all but she tried to catch herself quickly.  resuming everything took a moment and to the common eye, it probably looked like a glitch in the water pressure but there were no jets or pumps to supply it.  

        her attention focused on her hard work for a moment before she looked to the woman next to her, taking a half step to the left to make more room.  “ its ok, hard to focus on the screen and the crowd at the same time, “ she held up her own phone just a little to emphasize the point.

       “Oh, I watch Shark Week!” Every year, actually. He liked to spend that weekend watching all those shows about sharks on Discovery channel. “What’s your name? I’ll look for it in the credits tonight.”

        It was really exciting for Clint to know someone who’d been there. “Of course not. How do you— I’ve always wondered. Sometimes they show how people go film in cages to be safe from the sharks, but there are some scenes when it’s just a camera following them. How do you shoot those?”

       “ kai park, “ but she knew her parents would likely be upset she didn’t use her full name.  oh well, that would be a discussion for another day and not with an avenger.  “ I don’t know if they list me under the research assistants or something else, I just know they wanted my name for credit. “

       but she had to laugh at his question.  it was so honest and earnest.  “ we just . . . get in the water, “ she shrugged.  “ there are spotters stationed around to keep you aware of where the sharks are and aren’t and you have to be dive certified to a certain level to be capable of even qualifying.  I practically grew up in the water and around all of this so being around sharks while they’re doing their thing is natural to me. “

        bewilderment was evident in her expression as she watched a robot set off to get her drink.  it was to the extent where she was only halfway listening to peter as he spoke.  she had no idea what to expect when she arrived but this was far beyond anything in the realm of her wildest imagination.  in fact, kai was fairly certain this man was one bad day away from becoming a bond villain at this point.  he had the desk for it.  

       “ uh, no -- “ she belatedly answered the subjugation question before he went on.  a quick shake of her head and she focused on her lap, opening up the folder behind the tablet.  while everything here looked so high tech, she felt a little silly for handing him a printout of everything.  there was a flashdrive attached in case he preferred digital but she was old fashioned on the best of days.

        “ you’re doing so much in terms of saving the world, as people put it, with clean energy and trying to be more efficient.  however, people focus on the trendy gimmicks.  clean energy and reducing carbon footprints, stepping away from the dependency of fossil fuels, “ she made a vague gesture with her hand to express the unspoken ‘etc’.  “ not enough people focus on the oceans.  I have my hand in numerous conservation efforts but there’s a simple fact: the oceans are FILTHY and we can do what we can to save reefs and species but they’ll continue to suffer if we can’t clean it up. “

        it was obvious where her passion existed.  a slightly sheepish grin was offered as she gestured to the packet.  “ you like to save the world, I’m giving you another way to do that. “

of course, she’d told everyone that she was taking shogo to the aquarium for a show and to learn about sea life. that’s what she told them. but going to the aquarium had been just as much a part of h er own childhood in california, that honestly, it was just as much for her. what had caught her attention, however, was the mermaid performer in the reef tank. her senses had caught something others hadn’t noticed. she had to know. as the woman was taking pictures, jubilee approached with shogo on her hip.  ❝ so, mermaid       ❞ a smirk crossed her face as she fished for answers to her suspicion,❝         how’d you learn to hold your breath that long? ❞

      she loved the aquarium shows, they got far greater interest and attractions than a simple conservation gathering.  this one got the kids involved and made them excited, it inspired the parents to talk to them about what they learned and what they saw.  it was always a delight to see excited faces from the other side of the glass.  meeting them afterwards was more difficult because there were never ending questions and the idea was not to break the character, not to ruin the illusion . . . but she didn’t always expect it from the parents and the adults.  an innocent expression and crooked smile was offered to the mother in question.  “ i’m a mermaid, its what we do. “
