i think that while keith was gone, james had a phase where he reentered the church for a while as a sort of last cry for hope. praying a whole rosary every night in his room through tears pleading for keith's life and safety, kneeling at the foot of his bed like a child.

one year into voltron's return to earth, james lies sleepless next to a softly snoring keith, and wonders if God did really answer his prayers, if Mary was watching over him in space. he gently thumbs the small silver cross around his neck and kisses keith on the head.

James isn't a Galra so he can't use a Galra weapon or use the tech, but Keith still insists on him joining the Blades post-war because he's scared that the next time he comes back to Earth he'll find out that James died while he was away and James is all he has left of Before The War so he's extremely protective of him. James isn't going to complain because he feels the exact same way and was holding back on begging Keith to stay with him on Earth because he knew Keith was part of something bigger.

Pidge is working on a glove device that works like the Galra prosthetic Shiro had after his capture so James isn't going to have to be constantly accompanied to get anywhere, but Keith tells her to take her time on that. (He's the one always accompanying James.)

Rumor has it jeith r dating/ have feelings, Shiro doesn't believe it. Matt points out obvious couple moments between the two, Shiro still likes “No, they’re not together.”  Matt mentions the rumors to Keith, who talks 2 James about it, they go on a date. Needless to say, it goes well, cue shocked Shiro upon seeing them out together.

Now he's paying the price, missing a boy he fell in love with, but abandoned him without a second thought. But now, Keith’s back, and from the way he looks at him, he wants James too. The two get back together. Alternatively,  Keith missed James terribly, and regretted how he treated him, especially how he left him without goodbye. Now, they’re dating for real this time, and all of James’s friends hate him.

James freaking tf out post- almost crash or during war, knowing he can't freak out bc if he does his team will 2 and he has 2 protect the, has 2 put on a brave face 4 them. But if 1 of them almost dies it’ll be his fault bc he’s in charge. He also thinks- no, he knows that if he’d argued, if he’d pushed harder, the MFEs could’ve gone up before their teachers, and maybe they wouldn’t have died. Maybe 10 soldiers wouldn't have burned to death in their ships, screams now ingrained in his memory.

But he can’t panic. He must stay in control. Doesn’t have a good freak out until Keith is back, the paladin holding him while he cries, the only person he feels safe with, who he trusts entirely.

They were roommates at the Garrison, and used to hang out a lot. Ryan transferred to their Garrison base when they were 18, but the Blue Lion had left Earth by then. James and Keith definitely have some sort of past relationship, either fwb, close friends who have feelings but never act on them, or used to date and ended when Keith got kicked out

Ryan does get a little jealous from time to time about their shared history and inside jokes, but then him and James have their things since they were in war together and lived together, so it doesn't come up too much

James definitely has a type, hot guys who don’t like talking about their emotions, and slowly but surely gets them to open up. (James is extremely self aware, and knows how to identify and process his emotions. Ryan and Keith, not so much)

James is much more affectionate in public, and likes to hold their hands and lean on their shoulders. He is also a big proponent of cheek kisses, giving them as farewells.

Keith and Ryan prefer to put their arm around his shoulders or just stand really close to each other. At home, they’re much more affectionate

One time, a drunk tried to flirt with and get friendly with James, and on a mission he almost got captured, so they never let him completely out of their sight If they think someone is eyeing James the wrong way, they stand closer to him, hold him closer & silently glare at them (James will never say it, but he finds their overprotectiveness endearing, and their jealousy kind of hot)

Once, the did that thing where each of them puts a hand in his back pockets to subtly grab his ass and he nearly fainted, and his face was burning as they smirked

Ryan and Keith think it's cute when James gets flustered, so they'll flirt with him, compliment him, calling him pretty, cute, all that

James highkey has a thing for their muscles, specifically Keith's legs and Ryan's shoulders/arms

James loves their eyes, and will get distracted by them during meetings and meals. Ryan's are green, reminiscent of emeralds and when the sun hits them, it’s like light shimmering through the trees. Keith's are like a galaxy, deep violet hues, and James swears he can see stars in them sometimes

James and Ryan have a love/hate relationship with Keith’s "surprises" because they can be really anything- For instance, Keith bought Ryan a Polaroid with tons of film, and in the same trip, bought James a stuffed octopus (he was NOT happy)

James is super ticklish, Keith is a little, but not Ryan. But he knows where they're ticklish and tickle tortures them sometimes. James will laugh until he's breathless, then kiss Ryan so he stops, which turns into them making out and Keith walking in on them. Then he joins and James is a little unsteady on his feet the next day

Any 2 of them will crash at home after work and fall asleep on each other on the couch or bed. Normally its Keith and Ryan, which James thinks is cute and covers them with a blanket and makes dinner

James gets really bad bedhead, and it's the only time his hair is messy, which Ryan and Keith find adorable

James is a clothes thief, constantly taking their shirts and jackets/hoodies, which Ryan finds endearing, Keith is vaguely annoyed, since it’s usually one of his favorite garments that gets stolen. (James always steals his boyfriend's clothes in every universe and this is a hill I will die on). When James takes Ryan’s, it's 100% intentional, but he’ll accidentally steal Keith’s sometimes, since they’re a similar size. Keith will accidentally wear something of James’s and end up smothered in kisses because James thinks it's cute.

Ryan is the tallest, 3in taller than Keith, who is exactly 1in taller than James

Ryan is kinda scared terrified of spiders, something James discovered a few weeks after they met, finding him crouched on a chair and staring down at a baby spider on the ground. Keith shares his fear, but can face it if his boyfriend needs him. James thinks it’s hilarious: two strong soldiers petrified by a tiny spider.

James is a light sleeper and has bouts of insomnia, lasting days to weeks. He remedies this by getting railed training, reading, or (his favorite method) having one of his boyfriends act as an weighted blanket, pinning him beneath their warmth

James and Keith both have southern upbringings, their accents long since faded, but come out with a vengeance when drunk. (James called Ryan “darlin” once, turning him a previously undiscovered shade of pink.)

James smokes sometimes, as a form of stress relief. Ryan is very against it, so he doesn't in front of him. Keith will occasionally smoke with James, but isn't proud of it.

Ryan can sing, like, absurdly well. He sang “Feeling Good” when they went out for karaoke once, and it did something to his boyfriends

Keith has a Gay panic when he realizes his feelings for Ryan. He's had feelings for James for years, but Ryan is a new person in his life, and a gorgeous one at that. He came to the realization when listening to him talk about his fermentation project for the umpteenth time, thinking how pretty he was, and how nice his voice was to listen to. Hunk was there too, and watched the blush creeping it's way up Keith’s face with a knowing smile.

What could've been

I want to write a fic in which a spell is cast on/an alien attacks Keith, and he sees an alt universe- what could've been if he'd just talked to James instead of disappearing when he got kicked out, and it devastates him.

Where he sees him and James's relationship grow stronger, doing long distance. James meeting him at his house after Keith saves Shiro from the Garrison, going to space with him. Yes it's scary, the possibility of losing your boyfriend every day, but they're finally in space together, like they'd always talked about. James stands by him when they find out he's Galran ("I told you you have fangs" "shut up Jamie"), works with Matt and the rebels (James is not a paladin, but Keith's lion will occasionally respond to him if Keith's in danger). Where they get back to Earth sooner, get married, and are thinking about adopting a kid. Krolia likes James, Adam and Shiro are happy together, jeith has been together for seven years and is going strong.

Bonus points if it's a joint mission w paladins & MFEs and James has to snap Keith out of it, shaking him and saying "it's not real, Keith. It's an illusion, none of that is real". When James touches Keith he sees what he sees, forcing him to relive his biggest heartbreak, to see the happy ending he always wanted for them, that he knows they could've had if only Keith hadn't abandoned him.

The ride back to the Atlas is a silent one, neither willing to let go of the other, yet refusing to speak. When they get back, James goes to Ryan, his partner of four years. (though the idea of he and Keith's happy ending pains him, he has long since moved on)

Keith returns to his room, alone, mourning what could have been.

I love to think this was the thing that finally got them talking again. A panicked "you almost died and we weren't talking", or "I almost died, and we weren't talking" that leads to them hashing out their issues and crying and hugging bc fuck Keith almost died in front of James, again

We (the Jaith nation) as a society don’t talk about James freaking out when Zethrid got Keith enough. We never talk about the visible fear on his face, the tangible shake in his voice.

"Was that your boyfriend?" Ryan asked, appearing next to James, who jumped. "Jesus' Ryan! And shut up, he's not my boyfriend."

Ryan Kinkade, goalie, and James's favorite teammate just grinned at him. Ok, maybe James did have a small on/off crush on Keith. And maybe he's had one for a while. Not long, only since, like, sophomore year of HS. And now he'd been out of college for 6 months. So, yeah. Do the math.

He's had several girlfriends in that time, who he truly cared about and enjoyed spending time with. He still spoke to Melissa regularly, who he'd dated for a majority of college.

But Keith- they flirted back in hs, and James thought they could've been something. It had seemed like Keith liked him, but they'd had a weird conversation one time. They'd come out to each other years before, and were talking about how hard it might be to be out in the NHL. James thought if you really loved someone, you could do it. It might suck, but it'd be worth it. Keith had scoffed and said he was being ridiculous. "It would destroy your career. Well, maybe not. You could be bi in the sense that you marry a girl and be token representation in the league. But for me? It'd never work."

After that, the flirting stopped. James's crush faded. They went to different colleges, James met Melissa, fell in love with her. He and Keith had that fight. But now that they were talking again, the feelings came creeping back.

Maybe they had come back for Keith too. He'd always been hard to read, especially over the phone. Being able to talk to him, face to face, was much better. James would like to say he didn't light up when Keith walked into the bar, but that'd be a lie.

He was gorgeous. And grinning as he approached. The two hugged, perhaps longer than would've been considered friendly. Maybe they sat too close. Leaned in a bit too much when talking. Spent a little too long staring. Maybe Keith's hand never left James's hip. James's team didn't notice. They also didn't notice when the two left draped across each other.

James texts Keith a week later, and the two meet in a diner.It's awkward, at first. Instinct tells Keith to hug him, but it's been too long. They sit on opposite ends of a booth, glancing from each other to the menu nervously. Keith breaks the silence by apologizing for what he said about James's father. "You were upset and trying to hurt me. And you knew exactly how to do that. But-" James finally looks at him, a soft smile on his face. "- it's been years, and I've moved past it."

"Then why start talking again?" Keith asked. James shrugged. "Maybe I just missed you."

The two begin texting frequently, sharing parts of their day and sending photos back and forth. James had always been a charmer, able to wrap someone around his finger in just a few sentences. Keith's seen him do it, to men and women alike. So, when warmth blooms in his chest upon seeing James's name on his screen, he assumes it's nothing. James isn't flirting with him, it's just how he is. Besides, in the 3 months since the draft, James has been pictured several times with different women (not that Keith keeps up with that sort of thing), so he's certainly not interested in him.

Almost two months into their first season, their teams meet. Keith and James are chosen for the face off, staring at each other while waiting for the puck to drop. "Ready to lose, Kogane?" James taunts. "Suck me, Griffin." Keith retorts. James winks, and wins the face-off. Keith spends the rest of the game convincing himself it was just luck.

James's team wins by one point, and Keith gets a gloating text from him, along with the address of a bar. He Facetimes when Keith's walking to his car. "Keith, where are you? We're already on our second round." "I'm going home, James." The man pouts, lights flashing around him. "Babe, come on! When are we ever in the same city?" Keith tries to ignore the way his chest warms at the name. "Don't you have an early flight?" "Nah, schedule changed, we're here for a few days. Come on Keith, just one drink. Please?"

The man on his screen is slumped on a table, bathed in pink and blue light, lower lip jutted out in a pout. Keith sighs. "Yeah, okay. One drink." James beams, sitting up. "Great! See you soon!" Then he hung up. Keith sighed again, starting his car. He had a feeling it was going to be more than one drink.
