Week 11 Reflection blog
This week‘s content was not super helpful because of the fact that I was already quite into photography there for most of the information that at The tutor delivered in this week was repetitive for me.
However the experimentation stage was quite fun, we get to shoot our own design or product in a custom light setting that we can create ourselves.
There were a few tips and tricks that I learned this week on lighting. For example placing a black cardboard around the object can have an effect of illuminating the reflection on it.
I also experimented with the angle of the light, I find it to be particularly important because the shape of the shadows that it creates are very much depended on the angle of the light. For example the design I’m showing below is one of my sculpture design in another class, and the shadows were the main aspect of this design by manipulating the light I can create some very interesting shadow pattern onto the mounting board!
I will suggest everyone including myself to try to use black or white formboard more when it comes to product photography because they really can have some mind blowing you fact on your photos!

Week 10 Reflection blog
We were meant to take photos in the campus and this week, and it could be a very good opportunity to practice our photography skills.
I’ll fortunately I did not make it this week, therefore I took some free time during this week to practice my photography skills outside the campus. The Samsung photos that I took previously which I thought were pretty cool.
I was experimenting with the lighting and the depth of field on these photos.
For the first photo there was so much light shining through the sky therefore I increase the exposure in time and used a tripod to stabilise my camera. And the results was excellent! For the second photo, I wanted to create a very dark mood therefore I turn down the brightness balance, as a result the lightbulbs in the train station is really close and had a very interesting effeact.
For the last photo I only used my phone to take it, there is a mode called the portrait mode any captures pictures with very interesting the depth of field. According to my experimentation I believe that defend a mental idea behind this mode is The background will be blurred out by some editing to create the sense of feeling that it was taken by a professional camera.

Project2 pt2 Reflection Blog
Unsurprisingly, the challenge occurred when it comes to getting a smooth transition between the highlights and The shadows. I have previously practised in class with the computer and a mouse, but I have decided to use an iPad with the Apple Pencil, and it turns out to be a great idea.
Firstly I don’t own a drawing tablet, this means I can only render on computer with a mouse which is a terrible idea at the first place, it is hard to control the path of the pan with a mouse and also it is not efficient. With the Apple Pencil I can’t easily use it’s just like a normal pencil or a pen. Not to mention there are software is on iPad that are just as professional as Adobe suite. This software I settled on is procreate, and it was a great choice.
I Believe the way to actually master a software or a tool is to explore its potential when are using it. Into experimentations stage of this project I had a lot of fun with this software. I find that by using some tools for different purposes then they are suggesting can actually achieve some great effects. For example I enlarged a brush touch and used its patterns to imitate a metal finish or the speaker grill, they worked really well.
I also learned how to create highlight for a high amount of repetitive shapes. I learned this when I was trying to trawl the circles on the speaker grill and it was very time-consuming, so are used a pattern on the software to draw all the black circles. After that I simply duplicated this layer and shifted it by a little bit, and I changed it from black to white and it looks just like a highlight of each circle.
Overall it was very fun to render a photo with an iPad, and I have learned many fundamental ideas on digital rendering. I have also learned how light and shadows work on different type of materials.
In the future I plan to try rendering in the traditional way using markers, because I think it is faster than digital rendering in some aspect. This project have definitely taught me a lot!

Week8&9 Reflection Blog
This week’s content looks very easy, but it is actually very hard to practice. Digital rendering doesn’t look that complex at the first glance, but using a mouse to render a photo is harder than it looks. For project 2 I plan to use my iPad and Apple Pencil to do the rendering, therefore the activity in class was not very helpful for me however I did learn a lot of tricks and the basic fundamental concept of digital rendering.
I struggle at getting the colours to blend in with a natural appearance on the transition section. When the colours changes in one area (for example The Boundaries between reflection and actual colour of the object), I tend to get a very obvious transition which doesn’t look very realistic. Thankfully this is quickly solved by the introduction of blubbering. I find it to be very easy if I use the blurring tool to blow out The boundaries between colours so that you were having a smooth transition.
Another challenge I have encountered Is visualising the reflection on an object. It is a bit easier for me in the class activity due to it is a photo rather than an actual object. However I imagine it will be really hard for me when it comes to project 2, because I have planned to draw the sketch using a real object. This is very interesting to think about because the object and the reflection on it is just in front of my eyes, but for some reason my mind process the image so that I see and I can only perceive the object but not the reflection in detail. The solution I came up with is to imagine it is a photo of your fast my eyes rather than the actual product. I would look at the object for one second and close my eyes to reimagine it. This actually works like magic and I will recommend this method to others if you have the same problem.

Week7 Reflection Blog
This week’s activity was certainly helpful and also fun to do.
Sense I did not have any training in drawing a sketching, a bit more practice was definitely needed, and a few tips and tricks from the tutors can be a game changer for me.
When it comes to drawing circles I find it easier to try it fast rather than slow. I would imagine the reason being a circle have a consistent curve, when Drawing slow, I tend to shake so the curve won’t be perfectly smooth.
Line drawing is another interesting practice. I was told to use my whole arm when it comes to drawing, but it was very challenging to draw straight lines without putting my risk down. Rotating the paper to match the action of my wrist was helpful. I should definitely work on drawing straight lines considering it is going to be used a lot in the future.
Our tutor also told us to look at the dot and bring the pencil towards it when it comes to drawing a line through the dot, and it worked like magic. After a tonne of practice in class, I can manage to get most of the lines successfully over the dots, which is a big improvement considering I couldn’t even get One line through the dot the first place.
I will be practising these activities a few more times this weekend and hopefully continue doing this in the future when I got time, I do believe these skills will take a lot of time to practice but can eventually be mastered in my career.

Project 2 Reflection blog
This is a project that I’m very afraid of, hopefully this fear will disappear when it comes to the end of this project. The fear comes from the fact that I haven’t had opportunities to learn how to draw and it is not a particularly interesting area for me. The start of the project to is fairly simple, we are to create an inspiration board, which contains the product that we want to use improve it to end the style of rendering that we want to practices. I had no problem with finding a product that I want to do because I am very into tech industry. I quickly decided to choose something from the audio technology industry. The first few ideas was the QC35 headphone from Bose, the G560 speaker from Logitech and the SoundWear wearable speaker from Bose.
After analysing these three products I decided to make my life easier by settling on the soundWere wearable speaker from Bose, because it was made out of soft silicone which had a matte finish. Like I have mentioned previously I am not good at capturing reflection from the product, this map finished will make my life a lot easier because I don’t have to do much of the reflection. Also there is speaker grills on both end, this looks like a very interesting challenge for me to make the drawing a bit more complex than it was.
The second part of the preparation is to find the images that inspired me off the rendering stay on that I am going to use. However the images that I found online was not at the same level as my skill so I did not find it very helpful. Yeah for rather than try to copy a rendering style from the pictures online, I decided to analyse some renderings and conclude some positive points from them so I can improve my final rendering.
The positive points that I analyse from those renderings:
- add a background for styling and creating an atmosphere that I need for the Viewers.
- If I decide to try a multiple drawings of the product, I will have a consistent colour choice for them.
- I would also focus on The composition of trying to have a hierarchy in my rendering
Hope these tips will help you guys as well!

WEEK 6 Reflection blog
This week’s content was a bit challenging for me overall.
For me, the main concept of this week is visualising an object in 3D from different perspective and also draw it on paper in proportion and prospective.
The visualisation stage was pretty easy for me, and the trick that our lecture tought us in the lecture was really helpful too. Imagining a box containing to object that I want to draw helped me quickly gaining a rough idea of how sketch is going to look.
It is the perspectives drawing part that I find a bit difficult. Unfortunately I did not have any training in drawing or sketching, and hat made it quite challenging to sketch a 3-D object. The information that the tutors delivered in the lecture such as Different types of perspective drawings and prospective lines are all brand-new to me. As a result I constantly forgetting The process and rules when it comes to perspective sketching. The solution I have came up with is to write down the process such as drawing prospective line first, this way it will reminds me how the sketch should proceed.
I also had issues when it comes to visualising details in three dimensions. For example it is hard for me to visualise the connection point of the back of the chair and the seat. This is when drawing a draft at first place would definitely help me. With the draft in front of my eyes,I no longer need to visualising the whole structure of the chair but focus only on detail I need, which is much easier. In the future I would definitely draw not one by several draft before starting the final drawing.

Project 1 (pt2) Reflection blog
The transition from paper to rhino was way easier than I thought, after understanding the fundamental skills and the functions of Rhino, it came very easy to simply copy whatever is on the paper to the CAD drawing.
There is still some minor issues that I have encountered during this process but they’re all easily solved.
With a quick search online problems such as not knowing how to move a layer can be easily resolved. And the checklist that I created back in week two was very helpful, it remind me minor details such as use hatching when it comes to human lines, and I believe these details are what differentiate professional industrial designers from orders.
I recommend everyone to print out some charts from the textbook for from the lectures. Charts such as colours of every players and the dimension after border according to different sites of paper could be very useful when you need to do a quick double check. And by printing it out and having it around your desk you will memorise it faster than you think.
From the project one I have learned how to produce a professional level orthographic drawing, But practices are certainly needed. I only did a sketch of a relatively simple tool, and I have learned so much that I could never thought of if I didn’t put it in practice, it would be unbelievable the amount of new tricks that I can’t learn if I did a complex sketch. I will try to find opportunities in the future to practice more on this type of drawing

Week5 Reflection blog
This week is mainly about the text standard and some minor details on engineering drawings. I find it not very challenging compare to previous classes.
The only difficulty I had was memorising or information such as the correct colour to use for different type of lines and when to use hatching. But this is quickly resolved by taking a photo of the chart which contain those information on my phone so I can refer back to the photo whenever I need it.
After class I also printed out those charts and stuck them on my wall this really helps me to memorise them really quickly and it is way easier to double check if all the content are right. I highly recommend everyone do this it will help you memorise the information quicker than you think!
I find it a bit confusing about the location of the dimensions on the drawings, it was hard for me to decide where to place the dimensions according to the drawings. After going through the textbook a couple of times, I analyse my own system to use when it comes to choosing a location for dimensions and it worked out really well.

Project 1 Tool selection
This Coping saw was selected due to its simple structure but also areas with great details. I did not plan to draw the sawbladeBecause after difficulties when it comes to drawing the teeth. Most of the details I concentrated where the clips holds the blade, therefore I planted to draw a detailed view of the area.
The first hand sketch was done in the first week, and it presented a lot of problems very early on. Firstly there were many circles overlapping in the top view which made it very difficult to represent in the drawing clearly. The wooden handle of this saw was also challenging to draw due to there wasn’t a accurate method to measure the specification of the curve on this handle.
These challenges are quickly solved after a consultation with the tutor. Some of the circles in the top view were removed and represented in order of use so there won’t be too much overlapping. The wooden handle is also measured with the French curve tool.
Overall a good start on this project now I planned to refine and finalise the hand sketch and start to transport it on Rhino into a digital CAD drawing.

Rhino, A professional CAD software is introduced this week, end it was bit of a challenge for me. before I even wrote in the industrial design program I was studying design in UNSW arts and design faculty, and the CAD softwareI have Practiced The last whole year was Autodesk fusion 360. The transition from fusion to rhino seems to be the hardest part in this week.
Drawing to the engineering drawings on rhino was quite challenging at the first place saying is I literally don’t know where to begin. set a dating with my tutors I have learned not a method but a mindset on how to draw to the engineering drawings on rhino, that is to start with the most obvious dimensions and I’ll work my way around it. I also learned to use layers to hide reference guides rather than erasing them since it is very likely that I am going to use them again later.
Another critical role that I have learned is not to assume a relationship between two lines since you can’t cost massive problem with a small mistake. dissolution I have learned is to leave whatever I don’t know blank and come back to it later when I have more information surrounding it.
Overall I now have a brief understanding of the fundamentals of rhino, and I can now produce an engineering drawing on it. However, I do need more practice on it since I still find it hard to remember to function commands and shortcuts. I will be using The upcoming activities as an opportunity to practice Rhino

Week3 reflection blog
Engineering drawing was the topic of the third week wish I have very much enjoyed. I have learned to communicate with other designers in a professional manner with drawing.
The biggest challenge for me on this topic was to present the drawings with all the correct professional standard. The textbook that was recommended by the program was certainly helpful. However it is very hard to navigate when you don’t know what you are looking for. I had this problem during the finishing stage as there were still many details missing such as view titles and detail view ratio which I had no idea of. The fact that there wasn’t a checklist led to me spending a lot of time going through the textbook many times, but it was certainly helpful after all.
At the end of the class, I have not only completed the class activity but also sorted out a checklist of my own to help me double check my work when its finished wish I can also use in the future.
One more minor problem that I had during the class activity was I find it quite challenging to manage the drawing space since I don’t have a vision of the final drawing before starting. After consulting my tutor my solution was to draw One or even several drafts before starting the official drawing, this helps me manage the space better and also reduce the amount of mistakes that I could make during the drawing process.

Week 2 reflection blog
This is a very useful and practical course.
It was a lot of information to take in for the lecture section. I find it a bit hard to catch up due to the fact that I am not familiar with all the terminology and industry standards of engineering drawing.
It was very useful to have a notebook around for documenting important information such as learning key points. Unfortunately, I do not have access to the textbook because it was sold out. however, it was helpful to sit with the ’helpdesk’ members as they share their textbook with me.
I really enjoyed how the lecturer helped us memorizing important information such as using an eraser to memorize the position of each graph. it is really helpful during the time period that we have a lot of information to taking in and memorize.
I wish that I had the textbook and some markers so that I can mark down to important pages and tables on the textbook because they are fairly important and I do have to know where to find this information when they are needed.
In the practices section, I for got to read through the instructions first before executing. I started drawing after reading through the first step and that led to me not fully understanding the instructions.
And the position of these type of drawings are crucial. Can you order to use two drawings as guide to get an accurate third perspective, The first respective is had to be perfectly accurate.

Week 1 reflection blog
Several crucial techniques are Learned in the first week, and they can become very handy for engineering drawings.
I set up the paper in the first place and taped it onto the table, and that turned out to be very helpful to get accurate horizontal and vertical lines.
I enjoyed using the instructions sheets as they were very clear and easy to follow.
However, I do need to get in the habit of reading the full instructions before I start to execute them.
I have learned to always use a combination of rulers to get the angle that I need instead of just using one. I have also learned not to apply too much pressure on the knife when cutting through thick material, apply less pressure but do several times of cutting can help to get a cleaner cut and it’s also safer.
In conclusion, it was a fun experience and I have learned a lot. It takes some adjustments to get used to the new teaching methods (learning through practices ). And time manegement became very important in practice section.

Hi! I’m Ke.
I was previously enrolled in the bachelor of design program in UNSW for one semester, but it was not the right major for me, so I transferred to IDES, The reason being the practicality of the course. I like to design products that improve people’s everyday life.
