Katsu's Background Story
Katsu
Once human, he lived within close connections of others within a small village in the forest. Holding many sacred traditions, his family as well as the rest of the villagers partook in these rituals. The village itself held a treacherous manor within it, where the highest respected villager lived. Everyone within the village trusted the village elder and his family on an almost unhealthy level. It is the elders that follow through with all of the rituals, but it is the villagers that pick the sacrifices through the signs of their faith. Often blue eyes with dark hair against a pale complexion are what is sought after when it comes to making a powerful ritual.
The Crimson Petal Ritual
The villagers would pick a sacrifice every full moon to ensure the survival of everyone else. They did this to keep the evil god known as Shuten happy. Shuten was a very large red oni with terrifying horns atop his head. He enjoyed the gifts of blood and flesh from those who were human. Making a deal with the village, the village agreed to give him a sacrifice every full moon.
The night of a full moon appeared and it was time once again for a sacrifice. The village, like so many times before, went door to door and looked for those who matched the description of the chosen one. The ordeal was agonizing for the entire household to endure as their only son was dragged from his home and across the village. Losing not only his socks in the process but his clothes being nearly torn from his body. He was slammed down against the harsh stone of the altar. Surrounding him were cherry blossom petals. The villagers, slowly gathering around in hopes of calming the evil god above, began to pray.
Blue eyes against pale skin looked to the sky as the first blow landed. The blade felt hot, like fire, searing through his skin as the village elder began to cut away his flesh. They began with his legs, so that he could not run. It was then his arms that he could not fight, and eventually, as blue eyes met silver, there was a final strike. Crimson splashed against the cherry blossom petals that rested gently against his body. The villagers cheered, leaving him where he lay for the evil god to gander upon until morning. There he was left, cold, dead, against the stone altar in silence. Only the wind and the soft touches of cherry blossom petals kept him company.
The Gift from Bakeneko
Watching all along from a tree branch from above, the long tailed cat watched in awe as the young sacrifice never put up a fight. Knowing it was futile to begin with. What caught his attention was the gaze the young man gave him as he endured the torture of the village elder. Never breaking his gaze from the cat they made a bond. He, who was up above him, would become his savior. And the man that was below him would become his servant. For this exchange was not a free one.
“Be patient and endure this pain, for it will end and I will grant you a new life”
Without a word spoken from the young man he knew he had understood him. It didn’t take long for the hellish ritual to end, and for his spell casting to begin. He leapt from the tree and landed on the young man's chest, looking at his eyes once more, the dark black hair against the pale skin once again made for a nice contrast. With a flick of his tail and a few breaths from his lungs the young man began to transform. The tail was first, long, black to match his hair, and fluffy just like the cats. Then came his ears, furry and soft, but keen to sounds around him.
The skin that was lost has now returned, and the fatal blow that had killed him was now restored. He laid there, new, skin flawless once more but now with the gift from Bakeneko. His first breathe was cold, but eventually the smell of cherry blossoms and mountain hair refreshed him.
“You are restored, free to live as you please” Bakeneko said as he hopped off the altar.
“Leave this place and start anew” said the cat as he disappeared from sight.
