this cannot be a direct call out of There Will Come a Darkness but at the same time........it’s a direct call out of There Will Come a Darkness
little used fantasy trope i love: when two people are playing cards in a shady bar and it's the tense moment where they show their hand but it's a fantasy so they can't say things like "full house" or "royal flush" so they same some nonsense like "three crowns and a dead crow" and the crowd is like "oooOOHH" so we know that's good

I’m elated to tell you that my 9th studio album, and folklore’s sister record, will be out tonight at midnight eastern. It’s called evermore. To put it plainly, we just couldn’t stop writing songs. To try and put it more poetically, it feels like we were standing on the edge of the folklorian woods and had a choice: to turn and go back or to travel further into the forest of this music. We chose to wander deeper in. I’ve never done this before. In the past I’ve always treated albums as one-off eras and moved onto planning the next one after an album was released. There was something different with folklore. In making it, I felt less like I was departing and more like I was returning. I loved the escapism I found in these imaginary/not imaginary tales. I loved the ways you welcomed the dreamscapes and tragedies and epic tales of love lost and found into your lives. So I just kept writing them. And I loved creating these songs with Aaron Dessner, Jack Antonoff, WB, and Justin Vernon. We’ve also welcomed some new (and longtime) friends to our musical kitchen table this time around…

WAIT i got the same email about the exact same kickstarter project
just got a fucking email from kickstarter saying "we reviewed your report and found that the content does not violate our community guidelines or terms of service" type emails and it was about one of those ~pick-up artist~ guides that instructs one to literally just physically pick up and sexually assault women.
i reported it in 2013.
i got this email 3 weeks ago.

I love all of these suggestions!
Hi!! I really enjoyed There Will Come a Darkness! I was wondering- are there any songs that you associate with certain characters?? Totally not thinking of a few playlists~ Thanks! 😘😘
I mostly listen to lyric-less music when I write and I gotta be honest I basically listen to the same artists I listened to a decade ago because I’m boring. But I can tell you the album Age of Adz by Sufjan Stevens and in particular the titular song definitely inspired this series somewhat (it’s a weird album, just a heads up!) That said, if there are any songs YOU think go with the characters, I always love discovering new music!

Okay, first of all, I’m a HUGE fan, but I won’t go into detail about that right now since I’m supposed to be asking a question. Here it is: while writing There Will Come A Darkness, did you create Anton and Jude’s characters planning for them to be together later on, or did you make that decision after you knew quite a bit about their characters already? Additionally, what made you think their contrasting personalities would fit well together? I understand if you don’t answer - thank you!
Yes, I knew very early on what the trajectory of their character arcs would be and that they would play a huge role in one another’s growth. Which, to me, is the cornerstone of writing a satisfying romance! Their specific dynamic and the contrasts in their personalities kind of developed as I wrote them together and was able to understand exactly how these two people with VERY different life experiences would interact--and that was a great source of fun for me in those initial drafts of TWCAD (and beyond!)

Hello! I just finished "There Will Come A Darkness" (I'm now waiting for the second book's translation) and I'm completely blown away! Your characters are incredible. My favorite part about them was how they actually fail to accomplish their task sometimes - that they make mistakes and have to pay for them. My favorite main character was Anton, but I loved the other four as well! Will they all survive? Wait, don't answer that. Just wanted to gush a bit <3
Thank you so much! I do love writing characters who fail a whole lot...

Hi! I'd just like to say first that I LOVE your books and the worldbuilding is just,,, breathtaking. This also means that I inevitably have way too many questions about lore. Since I'm trans, I have a lot of questions about trans people in the Six Prophetic Cities. My biggest question is if names (the ones tied to your esha) can change. Of course, this could also pertain to non-trans people- if someone goes through trauma or a revelation, can this change the way their name and esha interact?
Thank you! And yes, this is something I thought about when writing TWCAD...your “true name” that a scryer uses to find you is not necessarily your birth name or the name your parents give you. It’s the name that is truest to YOU. So even if everyone calls you one thing, if YOU don’t feel that is your name, it won’t work. And it can definitely change over time.
None of this is ever explicitly stated in the text, but basically when you are born, you have a Name Day where an acolyte performs a ceremony that “binds” your name to your esha. It’s not uncommon to have a second Name Day later in life, if your name changes -- this could be bc of marriage, your gender identity, or any number of reasons (maybe you don’t identify with your birth family anymore). The Name Day is purely ceremonial though, so if you don’t go through with a second Name Day, your name can change based on the name that YOU feel is right.

hey!! just finished rereading there will come a darkness and then immediately read as the shadow rises and lemme just say... mwah love it thank u. i canNOT wait for book 3... also i was wondering how old everyone is? if u don’t mind me asking? it’s 4 in the morning right now and i struggle to keep track of things like that ahahshhd
I get this question with surprising frequency, I think because everything that indicates their ages is not entirely straight forward?
At the beginning of TWCAD their ages are:
Jude - has just turned 19 (he’s just returned from his Year of Reflection which starts when he turns 18)
Hector - 18 (he’s a little younger than Jude, which we know because the Paladin get to learn the final prophecy when they turn 18...Hector learned about it at some point AFTER Jude left for the YoR)
Ephyra - 18
Beru - 16
Anton: 16, about to turn 17
Hassan: 16, about to turn 17
Illya: 19?? I need to check on this one but I think he’s 3 yrs older than Anton
Khepri: 17
Penrose: she’s probably like....30??
