"Tales From A Northern Town"

To be a Red Sox fan is to be a living paradox. Every year, often despite my best efforts to the contrary, I get my hopes up, thinking, "This might be the year!", but underneath a tiny nagging voice is constantly saying, "Don't get too excited. Remember last year and all the years before that. Don't let yourself get burned again." I can be the most religious person in the world, but if you follow the Red Sox, you have no choice but to believe wholeheartedly in curses and superstitions. The average Red Sox fan is a walking, talking oxymoron and I am no exception. So when I look at the snow still covering our yard, the pessimist in me sighs and tries desperately to remember what the garden looked like last summer. Was it really there? Did I dream it? Looking at all that snow at this time of year reminds of what it felt like before October 27, 2004 as I cheered hard for my beloved Red Sox. My passion for the Red Sox runs high and I once again was hoping that this year will be the year that we finally win the World Series. On that magical night I prayed to the baseball Gods and begged “Let this year be the year that the Red Sox finally win the World Series”. I like the rest of the diehard Red Sox fans thought the drought would never end but on that magical night on October 27, 2004 the Red Sox won the World Series when Doug Mientkiewicz squeezed the baseball, our dreams as Red Sox fans was realized. The curse (if you can call it that) forever exorcised. So no more those “Wait till next year cries” or disappointed profanity laced rants. The Red Sox have fulfilled the 'impossible' dream! Thanks, World Series champions, you've altered our perspective As Francona said, "Nothing can take that away!"

At the end of the day, when I am lying in bed and I know the chances of any of our theology being exactly right are a million to one, I need to know that God has things figured out, that if my math is wrong we are still going to be okay. And wonder is that feeling we get when we let go of our silly answers, our mapped out rules that we want God to follow. I don’t think there is any better worship than wonder.
