The quote above wraps up the discussion of discrimination wonderfully. The society we grew up in does not justify the harmful actions or words that take place today. Each individual needs to educate themselves on the issue of discrimination and develop an empathetic understanding of what others have been through. Each story and background is different for individuals and it is sickening that discrimination continues to increase in our society today. This course has taught me how to educate myself on social issues. It has encouraged me to spread awareness to the people around me and hopefully make a positive difference in the discriminatory society we live in today.

The post I have linked above is significant in the discussion of discrimination. Women are already subjected to discrimination. To make things worse, women of color are faced with even further discrimination. Can you imagine the feeling of being disregarded, disrespected, or even bullied due to two things that are completely out of your control? Throughout this semester we have spent a lot of time reading about the struggles women face in other countries. This image of a beautiful young woman highlights the desperate need for change. No one should feel less than due to their physical appearance. All differences should be celebrated.

The link above describes a story about a young girl who is denied the ability to attend school until she removes her nose rings. This is a very different type of discrimination than what we have discussed in class, however I feel like it connects to our topics well. The catholic school she is wanting to attend is forcing her to remove her nose ring due to their religious beliefs. This boils down to the school not being accepting of her nose ring and choice self expression. It is hard to imagine what else the school would not be accepting of if they choose to make such an uproar about a student’s jewelry.

I love this image because it captures the true issue behind lots of controversies in our country. Many people choose to remain close minded. This often results in less research and education on social issues. The need for awareness is continuing to increase in the United States. In our class we often mentioned lack of education on social issues. Thankfully after taking this course, I was able to do my own research and open my mind far more than I had expected. Issues that were completely foreign to me now have my support and urge for change.

The link above is an article that discusses the protection of gay and transgender people in healthcare. It is shocking to me how long it took for there to be steps in this direction. I am sickened by the discrimination that gay and transgender people had to face in healthcare here in the United States, however it troubles me even more to think about the issue in other countries. It is hard the fathom the complete disregard and discrimination that is present in not only other countries, but also our own. I think this article provides hope for those who have suffered this type of maltreatment.

This image captures a very important message regarding to discrimination. I think that trying to force education and knowledge into people about the issue of discrimination can cause an opposite affect. Sometimes the most simple explanations are what we need in order to get our message across. This cute illustration solidifies the idea that despite all differences in our physical appearance, we are all the same. I wanted to share this because of its simplicity and power. Our class has analyzed many written pieces and videos that explain and educate us on the issue of discrimination, however I feel like this minimal illustration holds just as much power behind it.

I chose this post because it is a classic misconception regarding discrimination. Many people believe that the BLM movement put down other races and raises one above the rest. This is simply not true. Throughout class we have discussed topics regarding discrimination and the issue with single stories. Unfortunately, some who do not support the BLM movement choose to create a storyline behind the issue and attempt to turn people away from showing their support. Further awareness and education on the issue is vital to destroy this false narrative about the BLM movement.

I found this image while searching through posts regarding the issues of discrimination. It caught my attention because I had not been exposed to this type of discrimination toward men. The importance of emotional health is often overlooked, and even more so for men in our society. All people struggle with mental hardships regardless of the gender that they identify as. One way to decrease the stigma around mental health for men is to provide support and raise awareness. Throughout class we have discussed the issues around discrimination, and I feel like this post takes that discussion a step further.

Discrimination has a variety of victims. Sadly, we see people being discriminated for things that are completely out of their control. The link above is an article about the ban on electric wheelchairs that American Airlines has put in place. Those who are elderly, paralyzed, or injured in a variety of different ways use electric wheelchairs for their day to day lives. It is upsetting that American Airlines is preventing people from flying due to their unfortunate circumstance of being dependent on a wheelchair. The disabilities should be catered to, not thrown out.

The link above highlights the importance of liberation for all women. Unfortunately, many only support the liberation of women if they are choosing a specific lifestyle. Regardless of the path a woman chooses for her life, it is vital to support her and encourage her throughout her journey. Not all women choose to go to work, although a stay at home mom is working incredibly hard in different ways. I think it is important to acknowledge the issues behind selective liberation for women and make a change for the better.
