“That’s wonderful to hear. Tell me, my lady were the male nobility handsome?” She teased with a smirk.
Isabel laughed before gazing at her.
“I get the feeling, his majesty my cousin has something glorious planned as usual. Of course, I’ll be staying here! It’s such a homely palace I don’t see it fit to leave.”
Truth be told, Isabel was homesick even though she wrote to her family nearly everyday.
“Yes, I’m sure they miss me indeed… but England is my home now, so I suppose they shan’t miss me too much.” She said with a smile.
Tumblr media
“ with my attention firmly upon mine husband i am afraid i cannot say, though i have been informed on good authority that they were indeed and you shall see so yourself at the festivities. ” with the exchange of a mischevious smile, katherine thought upon recollection on how she much preferred when court was stationed as it was no rather than on such a male-dominated progress for female conversation was always much more appealing to her. “ i have every faith that you are indeed right and as cousins of the king we shall hopefully have grand views of it all. ”
lady de la warr was all too aware of her own occasional discomfort gifted to her by how others spoke of her mother’s reputation and her blood as a boleyn, yet she couldn’t imagine how much more strange isabel must have felt to be from another kingdom entirely. “ perhaps a royal visit may be on the cards and scotland will return to you here, or we may go there! i would so love to see the endless hill of the highlands. ”

pausing once beyond the threshold into her beloved cousin’s chambers, the elder of the two women bearing fire within their hair swept into a respectful but careful curtsey before taking another step. though they were cousins by blood, in her heart katherine felt towards elizabeth as though she were her own sister. since the loss of her mother she had found a great deal of comfort in being reunited with her kin and in her aunt anne and her children she had found a closeness to her boleyn blood and ultimately to her mother; mary boleyn. in return, katherine offered a great deal of loyalty to her boleyn kin - especially the dowager queen - and in the exchange a great relationship was formed.
“ your highness - i am to bring you a gift. ” formalities completed, katherine moved gracefully across the room whilst in her hands she carried a beautiful and rather large bouquet of yellow, white and purple flowers. with both hands wrapped carefully around the stems she carried them to the nearest table where she held them up for the princess to see, closely inspecting them herself to ensure no damage had come to them whilst they had been in her care due to how large they had been. “ i am unable to tell which gentleman sent them - a shame since they are most beautiful - a servant was awaiting my arrival to deliver them to you. who might be the mysterious admirer? ”

With a gracious tilt of her head Jocasta silently thanked her companion for the offered goblet. Glancing down at the libation, she swirled the dark crimson ichor about its silver confines, contented upon seeing the body hold – there was nothing worse than watered down wine, especially in such circumstances. The courts return to Surrey had filled the Duchess with a longing to be elsewhere, alas such luxuries were not even awarded to a woman of her position without permission. She had hoped that an earlier visit to her brother might have quelled the melancholic overtures consuming her thoughts, but they were perhaps more profound than she had originally believed. It would pass with haste, Jocasta quietly reminded herself, there were always countless distractions at court, whether they be political or personal.
Her gaze focused upon the merriment being had before her, the young and lithe forms being hoisted above the ground by their dance partners, each step well rehearsed in time with the melodies wafting down from the terrace. Glancing towards her companion, the woman leaned closer to them so that they might hear her over the general noise of the room. “It surprises me that you do not partake this evening, surely you cannot be void of a partner or two?”
Tumblr media
to witness the merry court of king william springing to life felt to be amongst the greatest of honours. courtiers appeared delighted as they indulged in song and dance, took to the gardens to enjoy the evening’s air, or even rested their prancing feet at a table with a cup in hand; it was quite something to behold. the sight of such merriment brought the mind of katherine carey to wondering how the performance before her might compare to the days when her mother - the late mary boleyn - would have enjoyed such courtly halls and feasts in both england and france. katherine truly adored being at court but at every turn there were reminders of days gone by and the guidance of her mother that she hadn’t been able to receive since she passed before her daughter could take her place.
for a moment she had admittedly gotten lost in a moment of somberness, holding a cup of wine between delicate fingers but never leaving her trance-like state to take a sip. it wasn’t until the light shifted ever so slightly by the movement of her companion that katherine rose up from her day dreams, turning to look upon the duchess with a gentle smile. though only cousins by marriage, katherine was always keen to be fond of all who were related to the boleyn blood that ran within her veins for it was them who brought her closer to her dearly missed mother. “ i fear i have paid little attention to partners this evening to have noticed, your grace. besides, i believe i would find much more enjoyment in your company for i do not believe that you would step upon my toes. do you find it as heart warming as i to see such joy within the court again? ”

“Lady Carey.” Isabel said with a curtsy.
“Not in particular, I do wish I could have joined but I felt my place was here. Was it your first time in the North?” She asked with a smile.
Isabel liked the Boleyns… to an extent. She was happy that they were in power but envy consumed her… the crown should be hers, eventually. She knew she had to win some favors in order to gain her spot in the line of succession back she couldn’t stand the thought of her evil uncle laughing at her from beyond the grave.
“Were any feasts held? I’m sure they must have been quite jovial.”
Tumblr media
“ indeed it was, i found it to be not as wild as some claim but every inch as beautiful as they say. i wish only that i might experience the north as far as your home for myself one day. ” katherine was a loyal as an english woman could be - especially to the crown - but she could not claim that her intrigue fell short as soon as it reached the border between england and scotland. “ there were but the audience was largely his majesty and the male nobility, none quite compare to those i have attended at the court of queen anne so i am most excited to see how our king seeks to celebrate. i hope you will have an extended stay here? though i imagine how scotland must miss you there will be much to celebrate!  ”

Location: Hampton Court Palace, 1559

Isabel had decided to stay in Hampton Court during the Progress through the North. She very well could have gone, but she decided against it. For one thing, there were far too many memories up North and she wanted to prove to England that though she was born and raised in Scotland and had ventured through the North to get where she is now, at heart she was and still is an English Lady of Tudor lineage. So, thusly she had stayed behind.
She walked into court and bowed her head to her fellow nobles as she walked past. Isabel turned around and saw a familiar face.
“Aye. It is wonderful to see you again. Tell me, did you take part in the Progress of the North?” She asked after she bowed deeply.
Tumblr media
“ my lady douglas, ” formally welcoming the conversation, the baroness lowered into a polished curtsy in acknowledgement of the scottish woman’s heritage and ties with the crown elizabeth felt so fondly towards. relationships between the two kingdoms were usually not so polite - not even when a tudor sat upon or beside each thrones - but katherine was never one to let politics bleed too heavily into conversation.
“ i remained at the side of the princess elizabeth in the absence of his majesty; though i am certain the progress was quite a sight to behold i can think of no better place to have been. do you think we missed a great deal? ”

BIOGRAPHY:
before katherine came to be the loyal lady-in-waiting to princess elizabeth and a public supporter of her aunt - the queen dowager - she lived through an upbringing of changing situations and reputations. born some months after the death of her father, the question of katherine’s paternity has been one which has been whispered by courtiers’ lips ever since her birth but mary boleyn, the only soul who could know the truth, always rejected such claims; even to katherine herself in the privacy of their home. further turbulence occurred when her mother remarried without permission and, at the mere age of five years, katherine would follow her mother into exile from the court and the company of her royal kin.
despite much confusion in her early years, katherine learnt much from her mother in terms of court life and found great pride in her boleyn heritage and the heights her aunt had climbed to. her mother’s experience of the courts of england and france - how to navigate and survive the politics, were vital when came the time for katherine to leave the exile of mary boleyn’s doing and joined her kin in the court of the king; which she took to like a fish might take to the water. most would have looked at the carey girl and assumed she was well versed in court life when it was still only early days for it was there that she found herself in her element, especially when in the presence of the queen or her cousins.
though she wore court life like a second skin, the whispers and rumours were never kind to her but she certainly wore it well. her time was dedicated to the goings-on at court and also making up for time lost where her relatives were concerned, but it wasn’t until she was married and held her position at the side of the princess elizabeth that katherine finally began to break away from being seen as a product of her mother’s failings to do what queen anne had. after losing her mother at the age of fourteen she sought to find the balance between remaining loyal to her memory whilst also making a name for herself and standing in a position of her own making, after some years of trial and error she found exactly that in her active support for the queen dowager and being a most loyal confidant to the princess elizabeth.
