The problem with “senseless violence” narrative around the UnitedHealthcare CEO is that it ignores the inherent violence of the insurance industry. Denying someone lifesaving care is violence. Subjecting someone to drawn out periods of pain before treatment is violent. The industry is made up of millions of acts of violence everyday, with the CEO at the helm guiding it all. This is not unprovoked and it’s not an overreaction; it is just harder to ignore

one of the most enlightening realizations ive had was finding out that non-24 hour circadian rhythm people were a pretty large group and most of us have oddly similar cycles of usually around 28hr internal "days" and this masquerades as "insomnia" but if allowed to sleep and wake naturally we will just advance forward through time an extra 2-4 hours a day at a relatively stable pace. we can't go to school or jobs or even run errands on normal schedules without massive pharmacological and behavioral intervention. most of the people who have been diagnosed or figured it out themselves will report horrific, life-ruining disruption in their professional lives and terrible health from accrued lack of sleep. this disorder is most common in vision-impaired people which seems to suggest it's related to light cues. anyway just thinking about this as extremely loud yard work woke me up at 8am for the second day in a row

I think it is very important to more widely discuss the facts that

it is possible to abuse someone unintentionally and unknowingly,

it is possible to be abusive towards or harm someone you truly do love,

engaging in abusive behavior is not necessarily caused by being a fundamentally evil person,

it is possible to be traumatized by the actions of someone which were not done with intention to hurt you, and

it is possible to be hurt or traumatized by an interpersonal situation that is not best characterized as abuse.

This is for several reasons:

It will make it easier for someone to realize and recognize if they are engaging in abusive behaviors towards someone else (because often times they will think: I am not an evil person, so what I do cannot be abusive), and stop this behavior and make amends to the target.

It will allow people to recognize their trauma and heal. (For example, one may think, "I must be imagining any emotional trauma-like symptoms I am experiencing, because I know my parents loved me! They did some things that hurt me, but other than that they treated me well. They are not bad people." It is still entirely possible to experience trauma from such a situation.)

(less likely) It may deter people from labeling an interpersonal conflict or a toxic relationship as abuse when this label is not applicable in that situation.

in order to not succumb to sex negative conservatism you have to accept that people will get off to things that are upsetting to you. and you cannot assume anything about what they have or have not experienced, what they do or do not believe, and how they act based solely on what gets them off. even if it's extremely confusing and disturbing to you. there are people who have only ever had heterosexual vanilla sex in missionary with the lights off, who actively contribute to more real world harm than your average fetish artist. kink is not a reliable source of information on someone's moral standing. it just feels good to think that way.
